There are tons of links in the article. I recommend checking it out. Oh, and if you live in CA, I highly recommend you leave. This year alone, the voters increase state business taxes by 1 billion a year, greatly increased income taxes and increased sales taxes. That's not to mention all of the other tax increases, bonds issues and gun control. Things will only get worse in the future.

Here are 10 of the reasons.
1. One survey of business executives has ranked California as the worst state in America to do business for 8 years in a row.

2. In 2011, the state of California ranked 50th out of all 50 states in new business creation.

3. According to one recent study, California is the worst-governed state in the entire country.

4. Thanks to Proposition 30, California now boasts the highest state income tax rate in the nation.

5. Even though California just raised taxes dramatically on the wealthy, state revenues are falling like a rock. State revenue for November 2012 was 10.8 percent below projections.

6. California has the highest sales tax rate in the United States.

7. California has the 8th highest corporate income tax rate in the country.

8. California has the highest “minimum corporate tax” in the country. Each corporation must pay at least $800 to the state even if a corporation does not make a single dollar of profit.

9. California is tied with New York for the highest gasoline tax rate in the country.

10. California is the only state in America that taxes carbon emissions.

I wish they wouldn't do this shit. It brings into question every other statistic they quote. The tax increases have not taken effect yet. Don't blow your argument with an obvious error.

Yeah, all 55 reasons weren't amazing. Some weren't amazing but were funny. For example.

35. Los Angeles
36. San Francisco
37. Oakland
38. Stockton
39. Sacramento

I am not sure how accurate that was, but it was my favorite part.

These questions are for anyone and everyone. Which reason was your favorite? Anything missing you think should be added?

7. California has the 8th highest corporate income tax rate in the country.

How does having the 8th highest corporate income tax rate in the country make California the worst state in the country? Wouldn't that make it the 8th worst state in the county? I understand that that can contribute to why California is the worst state, but that certainly isn't a reason it is the #1 worst state.

A gazillion reasons why California is the BEST state in the country!

1. We have the San Francisco Giants and won two world series in 2010 and 2012!

2. California has the largest economy in the U.S.

3. We have Silicon Valley.

4. There a gazillions of cultures and diversity all over the world in California; compared places with little like Nebraska.

5. We have Hollywood that makes all of your movies.

6. We have both cold and hot weather, mountains and crowded cities, forests and plains, farms and beaches. All the types of terrain in California.

7. Major events and conventions happen in California, while I never heard of New Hampshire hosting an international car show or something big like that.

8. We make the best wine in America right here in Napa Valley.

9. We have the most congressional seats and the most votes in the electoral college.

10. We have BART one of the best subway systems in America. I doubt New Hampshire has any.

If need be I still have tons of reasons why Cal is the best state ever!

Same thing goes for you Mass-holes too.

Stay in Boston, please.

I don't think talking about fascism and socialism is going to impress most of the people on this forum. It is good that taxpayers subsidize a baseball team owner by the elite? It is good that taxpayers subsidize conferences likely run by wealthy people? It is good that there is a massive failure of a subway system subsidized by taxpayers?

MA (in the towns just south of NH and much of the rest of the state) has a massive train and subway system. The taxpayers of MA subsidize it. There are a bunch of winning pro teams in MA that the taxpayers of MA subsidize. We get to enjoy that stuff, but our taxpayers don't have to subsidize it. It is like Amtrak. Sure we have Amtrak in NH but the people of MA, ME and federal taxpayers subsidize it. The people of CA and federal taxpayers subsidize the Amtrak trains in CA.

Anyway, there isn't really a CA vs. NH war and I appropriate you defending your homeland. To me, this thread is more about the problems of CA than about NH. I think we just have different priorities. I don't feel good about a gun to my head and someone forcing me to send my money to rich people ;)

I've lived in Nebraska, Kentucky, and North Carolina. I've spent a lot of my time in other states like South Carolina, West Virginia, Ohio, and Indiana. I currently live in California. I hate it here. I mean, the weather is great, and I love the cultural diversity, but that's it. Every time I try to stretch my arms and flex some of my constitutional rights, something cuts me down. Gun control like crazy, taxes eating up my income, etc. I would love to move to Indiana or even back to Nebraska. I feel so stuck here.

A gazillion reasons why California is the BEST state in the country!

1. We have the San Francisco Giants and won two world series in 2010 and 2012!

And plenty of other teams have won the World Series numerous times. Oh and you forgot to mention that sweet Rally Monkey down at the Los Angeles Angels of Anah-... what a ridiculous decision that name change was.

2. California has the largest economy in the U.S.

Large doesn't denote good. The unemployment rate in that economy is horrible... at one point Riverside County exceeded 20%.

3. We have Silicon Valley.

Which is heavily outsourced overseas.

4. There a gazillions of cultures and diversity all over the world in California; compared places with little like Nebraska.

Very true. Hard to match the cultural diversity in CA.

5. We have Hollywood that makes all of your movies.

We can film movies anywhere! And they frequently do, anyway.

6. We have both cold and hot weather, mountains and crowded cities, forests and plains, farms and beaches. All the types of terrain in California.

This is the one thing I really miss in the midwest. Just seeing mountains in your rearview mirror was so nice.

7. Major events and conventions happen in California, while I never heard of New Hampshire hosting an international car show or something big like that.

During the one week I spent in NH, I ran into several car shows. Everything is just on a smaller, more community-based scale up there. You just don't see much of that in California. While big events can be really cool, I never really felt a sense of "community" growing up in California.

8. We make the best wine in America right here in Napa Valley.

Not a wine afficionado, but I hear this is the truth.

9. We have the most congressional seats and the most votes in the electoral college.

All those electoral votes will always go to a Democratic candidate. Not a whole lot different than most of the other states in the country, but California is certainly one of the more hopeless states.

10. We have BART one of the best subway systems in America. I doubt New Hampshire has any.

Why would you want to go underground in NH? It's so beautiful!

If need be I still have tons of reasons why Cal is the best state ever!

You forgot the tremendous Starbucks-per-square-mile ratio.

11. If you go shopping in California, you can find a Palooza amount of stores, restaurants, and a bunch of things you can buy, while people in New Hampshire needs to go down to Massachusetts sometimes to go shopping in some of those special and unique stores.

12. If you live in San Francisco you can walk or take a bus to any place and no need to use a car.

13. There are a gazillion airports in CA where you can fly to many destinations such as France, Germany, Turkey, Portugal, Spain, Japan, or anywhere else.

14. We have fun activities such as mining gold (especially as all of us RP forum fans love gold) in Eureka and parts of Eastern California.

15. We have Lake Tahoe where you can water ski or ski in winter time and have an all you can eat lobster buffet!

16. We own the Golden Gate Bridge.

17. We have the top universities in the country! UC Berkeley, Stanford, UC LA, and on and on.

18. We have major technology companies located here including Apple, Twitter, Facebook, etc.

19. We have the premier solar technology invested in this state.

25. Values of home worths much more than in a place like Kansas.

Kansas has a pretty solid real estate market. You can look at the higher values in California two ways... I choose to look at it as a barrier to home ownership. My family is still in southern California, and my mother and I just bought houses in the same month. For the exact same price, my house has triple the square-footage, is located on a lake, has 3 more bedrooms, 2 more bathrooms, is decades ahead in "updates", and I didn't have to outbid the asking price by several thousand dollars just to one-up some investor who is paying in cash. Hell it's nearly the same exact story for the house my cousin is buying in Upland, except his house is costing 150k more than mine. The housing bubble in California was terrible and it really seems like history is just repeating itself out there right now.

I think most states not in the South don't tax healthy, unprepared food.
People and CA seem a lot less tolerant than people where I live.

I don't know how many toll roads/bridges are in CA but the statists love to bring up the example of how a private company tried to built a toll road in CA and failed. The taxpayers took it over and now it is a government toll because, I guess at least in that part of CA, only the government is able to built roads.

It is perhaps the best known toll road in the country to libertarian types because it was such a failure. It was started by a private company but the taxpayers had to pay for it because it was a failed road. It might be the most expensive non bridge toll road in the US. http://www.ie511.org/toll-roads-map.aspx

At least people are socially libertarian in California. I live in Oklahoma which has the worst of both worlds. It has a state income tax, toll roads, taxes on groceries, ridiculous alcohol laws, expensive vehicle registration, and the most back assward social conservatives in the U.S. I think I would trade you places and live in California if I could. At least you have beautiful scenery.

Keith and stuff

The voters might be socially libertarian but that doesn't translate to law. Freedom in the 50 States might not be completely accurate but it shows CA at #41 for personal freedom. http://mercatus.org/freedom-in-the-50-states/CA

There's a difference between tolerance and ignorance. Californians are tolerant as long as you believe what they believe. God help you if you want to keep your own money or vote republican/libertarian. And they are extremely ignorant.

In CA you are taxed on prepared, hot foods. Go to a grocery store and pick up a cold but cooked chicken from the deli. Not taxed. Get a hot one and it is. Carbonated beverages are taxed but not non- carbonated.

In CA you are taxed on prepared, hot foods. Go to a grocery store and pick up a cold but cooked chicken from the deli. Not taxed. Get a hot one and it is. Carbonated beverages are taxed but not non- carbonated.
Yup. I found this out at subway. Purchase a cold sub, no tax. ask for them to toast it, and you pay tax on it. Stupid.

18. We have major technology companies located here including Apple, Twitter, Facebook, etc.

19. We have the premier solar technology invested in this state.

20. We have a whole lot more better wi-fi, cell phone, internet connection than many rural places in America.

There's nothing like dropping calls on your iPhone while driving past Apple Headquarters. :p

Yes, Cal is great in some ways.
Northern for nature and open spaces, Southern for beaches, etc...

When I say property taxes are high, I mean the amount of property tax property owners pay in property taxes is high. I certainly don't mean rates. Rates are certainly a legitimate thing to compare. However, you are comparing property tax rates, not property taxes, in that case.

I wouldn't mean state total. That's a legitimate way to compare things too, but usually, mostly meaningless. It would need to be something which is comparable in more than 1 states so something like per capita, per household or per property owner.

Anyway, 1 of the best things about CA is the Romney spends more time in CA than any other state. Or how about Ashley Judd working there. The House Minority Leader lives in CA. The House Republic Whip lives in CA.

And plenty of other teams have won the World Series numerous times. Oh and you forgot to mention that sweet Rally Monkey down at the Los Angeles Angels of Anah-... what a ridiculous decision that name change was.

Large doesn't denote good. The unemployment rate in that economy is horrible... at one point Riverside County exceeded 20%.

Which is heavily outsourced overseas.

Very true. Hard to match the cultural diversity in CA.

We can film movies anywhere! And they frequently do, anyway.

This is the one thing I really miss in the midwest. Just seeing mountains in your rearview mirror was so nice.

During the one week I spent in NH, I ran into several car shows. Everything is just on a smaller, more community-based scale up there. You just don't see much of that in California. While big events can be really cool, I never really felt a sense of "community" growing up in California.

Not a wine afficionado, but I hear this is the truth.

All those electoral votes will always go to a Democratic candidate. Not a whole lot different than most of the other states in the country, but California is certainly one of the more hopeless states.

Why would you want to go underground in NH? It's so beautiful!

You forgot the tremendous Starbucks-per-square-mile ratio.

1. I like to pretend Dusty Baker never pulled Russ Ortiz.

2. The REAL unemployment in Merced, Ca is 40% at least. Merced County is at least 35%. GTFO of KALIFORNIA.

Never officially hits freezing (below 32 degrees) and unless you go inland to the desert areas, rarely even 90 on the other end of the scale. "Winter" means rain (which we are getting now and usually lasts for two to three months). This means significantly lower energy costs. My sister in Texas said she spent $300 on air conditioning in July. Granted I have only a one bedroom condo but my utility bill runs about $35 a month year round (not including water and heating or using it). How would your heating and cooling expenses compare to the cost of what the sales tax difference would be? With mountains (OK- I grew up in Colorado- what we have here are NOT mountains) and deserts nearby you can go surfing or skiiing on the same day in winter.

I thought so too, but at the subway by my place of work, they even posted a copy of the legislation that applies to their tax rules. I guess a lot of people were confused about why they were paying 5 bucks for a footlong that wasn't toasted, but then had to pay the tax on the toasted sub. They highlighted the relevant section and posted it by the register. Kind of funny.

Since there have been more questions- more info on the California sales tax laws:
http://www.ehow.com/list_6776720_california-fast-food-tax-laws.html

Take-Out Food

Under regulation 1603 of California's sales and use tax regulations, sales tax should be assessed on hot food products that are sold as to-go orders at fast food restaurants. The amount of the tax is the standard state sales tax rate. However, take-out orders of cold food, like veggie sandwiches, ice cream and doughnuts, are exempt from taxation under state rules.

Take-Out Drinks

Regulations state that the state sales tax does not apply to hot beverages that are sold to go, like coffee and cappuccino. It does apply however, to cold drinks, like carbonated soda and lemonade.

Dine-In Food

Sales tax applies to all hot prepared food products that are sold for immediate consumption, either at or near the fast food restaurant selling the food. This does not apply to food that is sold in large enough quantities that they are obviously not intended for immediate on-premises or near-premises consumption.

Dine-In Drinks

Most hot drinks and cold drinks alike that are ordered for dining in at fast food restaurants are taxed, but the state has created exceptions for water and juices.

Coupons & Discounts

When a fast food restaurant offers a promotion that gives a free meal to a customer who buys another meal at the regular price, the restaurant is regarded as selling two meals for the price of one and the tax only applies to the price of the paid meal.

NH created the whole process. Before NH made the primary famous, it was all decided in smoke filled rooms. Now, some people in most of the states have a say in the process. You should thank NH for that. Instead, you are mad about it. I don't get it. As for Romney winning NH, yes, he won a bunch of states. At one time you even tried to say California didn't have hardly any trees, when in fact there are probably more forests than the whole state of NH.

I never used the words tree or trees in this thread until just now. Please just calm down, there is no reason to make stuff up. I haven't looked it up but I'd guess that CA has more trees than NH. NH and ME are the most heavily forested states in the US but that doesn't mean that CA has hardly any trees.

I agree that there are many reasons Ron Paul did poorly in CA. Perhaps the late contest was 1 of the reasons. As for another state being the 1st primary state, I doubt that is going to happen anytime soon because the penalties for holding a early primary were just increased.

As for WA, ID and ND, I'm not even sure if they hold primaries so I'm not sure why you mentioned them. Maybe WA is going to have a primary in 2016, is that what you mean? I'm trying to help you flush out your argument but you haven't given me a lot to work with.
