The place-holder is in. I predicted this will happen. Now they will have a competitive primary in 2014 on the same day as Lindsey Graham's thus taking all the heat off him and reeling in the suckers who will try for this seat.

The likely winner of the seat will be someone well funded and probably one of the State's congressman but who knows what can happen in a crowded primary? it will almost certainly mean Tom Davis will want to try for this seat than knock off Graham and he'd be at a distinct disadvantage because he will no longer be up against the incumbent one-on-one. All the media attention will be on this race allowing Graham to run virtually unopposed in his own primary.

The Tatler has learned that South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley is almost certain to appoint former South Carolina Republican Party Chair and former S.C. Attorney General Henry McMaster to fill the unexpired term of retiring Senator Jim DeMint. McMaster was a prominent supporter of Haley in a contentious GOP primary. Haley has reportedly already informed key South Carolina politicians of her decision.

McMaster could also decide to run in the special election, if he does then Graham would become vulnerable but who knows what will happen

Graham is going down. This won't stop it. He has an approval rating in the 40s.

No other media outlets have picked up on this. I'm sure she didn't make a decision in one day.

We should be pushing for Scott. Acceptable, historic, will let us ignore that race in 2014 and focus on getting one of our favs in to replace Graham.

I didn't realize Nikki Haley didn't like black people. ;)

Sanford and Davis tag-team?It will take a lot of money to win a seat in SC... That 1/64 native Indian Elizabeth Warren, up in little old Massachusetts, spent $42 Million on her Senate race and has a nice debt to go along to win her seat.

More Good Ole Politburo mint julep South Carolinian politicians... looking at the timing of McMaster, he stayed in school to avoid NAM? 1965-1973... then joined the military reserves he served in the United States Army Reserves (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Army_Reserves), In 1973 to 1975 (W Bush move). Draft dodging?

Sanford is connected with the good ole boys and I don't think he and Tom would have trouble raising money.

Keep in mind, outside groups would probably support them as well.

Keep in mind, outside groups would probably support them as well. Linda McMahon spent $50 Million on her race in Connecticut and lost(general Election). Lindsey Graham has the most big money connections across the country. He's sold out to just about everyone in a position of power and wealth, I'm sure they'll come to his rescue. It will be very costly primary taking him on in a fight.

CT has an expensive media market and a massive Democrat registration , that's why it cost her so much. it costs about 3-4 million to win a senate race in SC.

Lindsey has 4.4 million in campaign cash in the bank, so yeah it'll cost a few bucks but it's doable for us. see Kentucky and Rand Paul

"Appalachian trail hiking" too recent to sanely appoint Mark Sanford. The logical choice, and I would encourage ALL SC residents here, to write or contact Gov. Haleys office, and put in your 2 cents worth for SC state senator Tom Davis!

So what do we know about Henry McMaster, other than the fact he was one of the AGs that harassed Craigslist?

KY has a much better pro liberty populous as oppose to the Gary Bauer lunatic fringe of the palmetto plantation. Plus we know how hostile the SCGOP is to libertarians/Ron Paul/etc. Those clowns running the SCGOP completely blacked-out Ron Paul in 2011/2012 while running fundraisers for Bachmann, Newt, Frothy, and Mittens. They even hosted Rick Perry's Presidential run announcement. Ron did poorly in SC too.

Didn't the NEOCONs in the state GOP go after SC state senator Tom Davis after his announcement of backing Ron Paul. I'm sure it will be more of the same corrupt media pushing the slected insider. The average SC people won't have a clue, how the ops go down.

Davis is not interested and has expressed this in a letter to the Governor. Sanford is the best choice, but unlikely. Mulvaney is much more likely and also a very good candidate. Scott isn't particularly good, but better than an establishment moderate.
