Recounts in two close New Mexico legislative races will start next Tuesday under an order by the State Canvassing Board.

The outcome of the contests will determine the size of the Democratic majority in the state House of Representatives.

Recounts are required because the margin between the candidates is less than one-half of 1 percent.

The board on Tuesday certified results that showed a tie in a southern New Mexico race between Republican Rep. Terry McMillan of Las Cruces and Democrat Joanne Ferrary. Each received 6,247 votes.

There was a 66-vote margin in an Albuquerque area House race, with Republican Paul Pacheco of Albuquerque leading Democrat Marci Blaze of Corrales.

County elections officials will conduct the recounts, but the state covers the costs.
