The U.S. and a bunch of island colonies it protects

UNITED NATIONS — Just nine nations voted against the Palestinian Authority's upgrade to nonvoting observer state status, which passed the General Assembly 138-9, with 41 abstentions.

Voting "no" Thursday were Israel, the United States and Canada, joined by the Czech Republic, Panama and several Pacific island nations: Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru and Palau. The Pacific nations typically support the U.S. and Israel at the U.N. on key General Assembly resolutions.

I dont get why it requires the consent for the entire world to become a country?? I think in the 7,000 years of recorded human history... a country can form whenever the hell they want as long as they can fight.

it just occurred to me that the US will get out of the UN when it becomes apparent that the US can no longer control the votes of the other member countries

Apparently none of those nations voting against the resolution have any sense of irony, whatsoever.

So, if the Palestinians get a country, where will their land come from?

What's required to make a country is the ability and the will to defend a piece of territory from all comers. If you can do it, you have a country. If you can't, you don't.

Fuck yeah. People need to stop asking for permission to exist in whatever capacity they choose.

Well , I knew how the Canadians would vote :) , I am thinking , also , maybe 40 did not vote , and thinking that if it were to happen , they would have some serious financial hurdles to overcome.

Wasn't actually granting statehood but it does give them more access to the UN- such as being able to file charges of abuse against Israel in its court system.
