A photo of a New York City police officer kneeling down to give a barefoot homeless man in Times Square a pair of boots on a cold November night is melting even the iciest New Yorkers' hearts online.

On Nov. 14, NYPD officer Lawrence DePrimo, who was on counterterrorism duty in Times Square, saw the older homeless man without shoes sitting on 42nd Street. DePrimo, 25, left and then returned with a pair of $100 boots he bought at a nearby Skechers store.

"It was freezing out, and you could see the blisters on the man's feet," DePrimo, a three-year veteran of the department who lives with his parents on Long Island, told the New York Times. "I had two pairs of socks, and I was still cold."

Cool. I'm HIGHLY surprised, though. Could have just as easily been "giving boots to his neck", but this will do. I'm almost positive the officer was talked to about this, and not in a positive way.

He was on terrorism patrol, that man was obviously a terrorist. Dereliction of duty.

He may or may not sell the boots for a whole bunch of booze which will keep him warm in a different kind of way.

But who's going to buy used boots from a bum?

That's a good cop... too bad he probably won't last on the force... they don't like good cops.

Can't trust em'. They might turn you in the next time you bash somebodies head in because you're in a bad mood.

NYPD officer Lawrence DePrimo, who was on counterterrorism duty in Times Square....

Didn't they used to call that walking a beat?

but then you can't use DHS funds to pay their salaries.

No hit against the officer, he's putting in a good day's work, but I'm pretty sure that is why it has that name.

I believe in not giving excuses to anyone when they do wrong just because they are a cop, and I don't believe in taking anything away from someone when he does something right just because he's a cop. Officer boots! You deserve an awesome puppy whoever you are.

that is a nice story. good for officer boots. thanks for posting.

as much as i tend to dislike cops and question the personality of anyone that would want to be one, to me this story just helps to verify the libertarian understanding/belief that people are good

But who's going to buy used boots from a bum?

A slightly better-off bum who thinks the boots still look new and will buy them for $50.

But...but...private and personal charity doesn't work... Only the government has the ability to help the downtrodden...

Am I the only one who heard the part of this story where the officer said he has no idea what happened to the guy... and thought... I bet the homeless guy was busted shortly thereafter by a cop who was suspicious that he had such new boots?

The random act of kindness was captured by Jennifer Foster, a tourist from Florence, Ariz., who was visiting the city. Foster, communications director for the Pinal County Sheriff's Office in Arizona, emailed the photo to the NYPD with a note commending DePrimo.

The picture was taken by a PR agent. What are the chances?

Ok this is BADASS! :D I do love good cop story.

However, we should probably start a chip-in to rescue this cop from Gitmo and build him a drone proof bunker.

Nah just been homeless before. It is also possible he got robbed of the boots soon afterwards :(

Also possible that someone took a picture of a cop stealing a homeless guys boots and started some story about an act of kindness (kidding)

I do find it kind of funny that a cop gives someone some boots and it starts some kind of "viral" internet activity.. Is it just because a cop being kind to someone is so far out of character?

It is incredibly out of character. 99.99999999999% of the time it would've been a cop using a brand new pair of steel toe boots to stomp a homeless guy.

When I saw the thread title, that is exactly what I thought it was going to be about. Cops, Boots, and Homeless guy... I didn't click on it for a while because I felt like blocking that image.

That was my first impression, that those boots would be stolen within days.
