The diplomacy clearly strengthened a U.S.-Egyptian partnership that has been strained in the 21 months since Egyptians toppled Mubarak.

In that time, Washington angrily protested Cairo's crackdown on U.S.-funded pro-democracy groups, its slow response to attacks on the Israeli and U.S. embassies, and its inconsistent control over the Sinai Peninsula.

The U.S. regularly threatened to withhold aid, and Obama remarked in September that he no longer considered Egypt an ally.

Egypt's Morsi assumes sweeping powers

CAIRO — Egypt's Islamist President Mohamed Morsi assumed sweeping powers on Thursday, drawing criticism that he is seeking to become a "new pharaoh" and raising questions about the gains of last year's uprising which ousted Hosni Mubarak.

The move is a blow to the pro-democracy movement that toppled the long-time president, himself derided by many as a pharaoh, and raises concerns that Islamists will be further ensconced in power.

Opposition forces denounced the declaration as a "coup" and called for nationwide protests on Friday.

"The president can issue any decision or measure to protect the revolution," according to a decree read out on television by presidential spokesman Yasser Ali.

"The constitutional declarations, decisions and laws issued by the president are final and not subject to appeal."

When Morsi first "arrived" in Egypt, they were saying he was the new leader in a post-Mubarak, democratic, Islamist-led Egypt. Sounds strange, and even stranger, it almost sounds mostly positive doesn't it? You didn't really think they could continue to speak positively about this situation did you? Then he politically pushes Israel to the negotiating table with Hamas. Israel isn't used to being pushed into doing anything and they don't negotiate. Yet they did, and a ceasefire was announced. Of course, the next day, you have stories about angry Egyptians saying Morsi is now worse than Mubarak and there are questions about how "democratic" the process of bringing him to power really was. The people didn't even wait and see if he would use Mubarak's old (but made-in America) tear gas on them. I suppose it shouldn't matter since we've ousted democratically elected governments, dictators, hell even our own puppets we established, but the timing is interesting isn't it?

Wow. I stand corrected. I hadn't read the latest on what Morsi had pulled. I watched an hour long speech by Rand a few weeks ago about putting condition on foreign aid and how Hillary was wanting to actually increase aid to Egypt. I couldn't for the life of me understand why. Now I realize it should have been called "bribe-money", not aid. Morsi had me fooled. Apparently a lot of Egyptians are saying the same thing. Well, hell, that's what these forums are for, right?;)

It's the same technique the federal government uses to get the states to do what they want. Withhold "aid" for highway upkeep. In other words, if they bribe the states with their own money, they can get the states to do as they wish. I'm pretty sure much of the bribe money comes back to the U.S. by the way of arms sales.

It usually involves putting the country in debt. Bribe money goes into the hands of the Dictators, the money that comes back is borrowed. Control them via debt and make money off of them at the same time. It's win, win! :rolleyes:
