We've all read the stories about some poor bastard that is trapped in the legal system because they had the temerity to backfill some swamp, or replace some sand that a creek or river washed away. (Anybody know who Carl Drega is? - Google his name.)

This is a picture of an area of the Jersey Shore (right near where I come from originally, I know the area well) called Mantoloking Beach, about ten miles north of Seaside.

This is prior to Hurricane Sandy.

http://www.11alive.com/images/640/360/2/assetpool/images/121108113641_mantoloking-before1108.jpg

This is what it looked like with a new inlet created by Sandy.

This is common and what occurs naturally on sand barrier islands. There used to be an inlet here back in the 18th century. Opened by a storm in 1750 and closed by another one in 1810. Natural process.

Exactly what we are told we, as land owners, cannot interfere with when it comes to our property.

Here's what it looks like, as of a few days ago.

Closed in, back filled and well on it's way to being "repaired".

Where are the environmental impact statements?

Where are the months and years of time and money lost getting permits, variances and waivers?

Where are the lawsuits?

Where are the clam cops (Environmental Police)?

Where are all the impediments that would hinder a private property owner from doing the same thing on their own dime and possible landing them in jail?

My daily line of work involves lots of coordinating this type of crap. Its funny how only the businesses worth tens and hundreds of millions of dollars are able to hire the lawyers, engineering firms, environmental specialist to help push the process through the EPA and EPD. And then there are mitigation costs, which can top one million dollars in a hurry.

One of things I noticed about this as well.

This is a new bridge that was built here.

The old Mantoloking bridge was on pilings.

It looks to me like the new bridge, with a solid abutment on the eastern side, helped "channel" the water, causing the washout.

Where the old bridge would have allowed the water to flow more freely.

That looks like...an interesting place to build a house. What's not to like? Building on sand, right next to the ocean, basically at sea-level. What could go wrong?

On a strip of sand, a couple hundred yards wide, at the most.

Wonder if the "land owners" are paying for the repair? No, no, social risk, private reward no doubt.

No, you and I are Mundane.

Lets not mention that this is one of the wealthiest stretches of beachfront in the country, and all those homes you see were priced in the multi million dollar range.

I have ZERO sympathy for people who live in places like this.

Land value was obvious from the aerial photos, funding for "rehab" inferred.......

Fixed that for ya:

That looks like...an interesting place to build a house. What's not to like? Building on sand, right next to the ocean, basically at sea-level. Best perk of all, when whenever anything goes wrong FEMA buys you a new house, with new dirt if need be; on the taxpayers dime.

Looks like Homestead, FL area after Andrew. The best way to figure out which contractors you don't want to build your house.

Wouldnt there be more beach frontage if they allowed the natural channel to exist?

Maybe there are just some times when the central banks are making a profit by loaning money for repairs and other times when they are not.
