with sanctions, you have the option of leaving....still alive. With nukes, there is no leaving, no running away, just the option of being in a pseudo grave.

True. But the sheer fatality counts of sanctions are exponentially higher. Just imagine Obama or Romney bragging during the debates about how many nukes they've dropped/will drop. Sanctions- political language that makes mass murder seem innocuous.

I'd rather be nuked than starved to death.

That unlikely "option to leave" deal is not much of an option in either case.
