Bertrand Delanoê, the socialist mayor of Paris, has submitted a proposal to the French capital's city council that aims to ban all cars and utility vehicles 17 years of age or older from use inside the A86 motorway. Buses and trucks 18 years old or older would also be prohibited from inside the city proper. The proposed ban is largely aimed at reducing emissions, though it also includes a stipulation barring motorcycles built before 2004. According to The Telegraph, Delanoê argues that such machines are "the most polluting and noisiest." But opponents of the measure say the proposal would only serve to exclude less wealthy individuals from driving in Paris.

In response, the socialist party has said it would introduce programs to help individuals update their vehicles through a program to swap old machines for new ones. Unfortunately, that seems unlikely given the strict austerity measures sweeping the European Union.

Delanoê's critics, meanwhile, have said the proposal is more likely political posturing than any real attempt at changing policy.

I feel sorry for all the non-socialists in France. It really is a nice country with good people, aside from the political landscape.

all three?

Come on lol Most of them are not socialists. Most of them are not anything at all. They just vote a certain way because all their friends do. Just like in the USA.

this is not a new idea; Singapore did it decades ago

and even cash for clunkers was a milder version of the same thing

but socialist is not the right word; this is corporatism, so people are forced to buy new cars

Well my 97 honda is nearing 16 years old and it runs like an absolute champ. Some repairs here and there, but overall, the car is awesome. Plus 33 mpg to boot! Sorry paris, you won't see my precious civic any time soon.

I would never dream of getting rid of me 25 year old car, in every accident it has been in, it's barely been damaged, while the other car needs extensive repairs. Obviously safety is not his concern.

I get that it's just corporatist bullshit. But the irony is it would only increase pollution, maybe not there, but they have to build the new cars somewhere.

My friend's Chevy has been on the road for 54 years. Now thats "green."

Funny how old cars getter mpg than the old ones.

My '89 CRX got better mileage than my '05 Civic Hybrid. Go figure

Why 17 years? Does someone who helped with the bill have a 16 year old car?

How about creating more jobs by simply breaking all windows, especially the ones that aren't triple thermo-pain? (they're a pain because they eventually fog up internally)
