The most visible member of that family — wife Ann Romney — says neither she nor her husband will seek political office again.

"Absolutely he will not run again," she told the hosts of ABC's "The View" in October when asked if a loss would mean the end of Romney's political career. "Nor will I."

As if Mitt Romney's defeat weren't a cross enough to bear, the kind of campaign he ran could make him uniquely a man on the outside of his party looking in.

His chameleon-like shades of Republicanism — he presented himself as "severely conservative" during the GOP primaries to appeal to the party base but then moved toward the center as Moderate Mitt from Massachusetts to woo independents — could make him a pariah in both circles from now on.

I don't feel bad for Mitt Romney. He still has his fortune plus will add to it by writing a book and doing speeches. He didn't spend one dime of his own money on this campaign.

He could go for the Democratic nomination in 2016. Just flip flop back to his policies from when he was governor.
