I'm not a fan of pit bulls in general, having nearly been mauled by a pair of them about a decade ago. However, I'm also not a fan of cops shooting every dog on sight (and in the past cops have even identified a border collie as being a "pit bull").

It wouldn't surprise me at all if this "pit" turned out to be a Boxer or something like that. Seem like a case of "karma" to me.

Guess the protective vest didn't to much to keep him from being shot in the leg.

What happened to the vicious dog? Is it harming the children? Did it growl or dare I say it...show it's teeth?

Does this mean both officers get paid vacations then?

Much better a wounded cop than a dead pet.

As a volunteer I interact with pit bulls a couple times a week, we pull them out of shelters to prevent them being euthanized. I can tell you that they are no different to any other dog, in fact one of the best breeds by far. Idiots get pit bulls thinking they are 'guard dog' or to be tough, or for whatever reason and then find out that they had a misconception about the breed and dump them at shelters and a large percentage of them get euthanized or have issues.

No dog is naturally aggressive toward humans - I'm sorry to hear that you got attacked by two of them but in that case what happened was someone made them fearful of humans, probably through violence, and the dogs become aggressive to protect themselves.

Just want to clarify that because it is important - and hardly any dog that is in a home with a loving owner will 'growl' or be 'aggressive' to police unless they attack the dog's owner.

Don't be afraid of pit bulls though, they are great dogs I know that from experience with hundreds of them.

I agree, and thanks to all here for the welcome to the forum!

It may seem like I'm gloating about it, and maybe I am. However, , it's unfortunate this had to happen, but, as the LEO's on another forum like to say about the mundanes who get screwed over by the police : "play stupid games, win stupid prizes!" .

Most likely the cop who fired away played a stupid game and the cop in critical condition won a stupid prize -- I'm sure the dog could have been dealt with in a less lethal way, if it even had to be dealt with at all. However, it's now standard operating procedure for the police when dealing with canines to shoot first.

Oh, I understand not all "pit bulls" are bad -- I think the two I faced down were likely ones that were being used in dog fighting or were otherwise abused; they were EXTREMELY aggressive. The only thing that saved me was having a water hose to swing at them as I backed up to my front door -- which was a tricky maneuver because my black lab was at the door ready to defend me, and I didn't want him getting out (they would have had him for lunch).

So , I can understand the other point of view from that one experience, there might be some VERY rare situations where it's truly necessary to use deadly force to defend against dogs. Being a "mundane" even in that situation I would have still hesitated to use my pistol (if I had it on me) because I do not have qualified immunity and a neighbor's house would have been my backstop. That's the problem though, cops are being given a free pass to kill any dog they decide to kill, and it's mostly relatively harmless ones that are getting blown away in these situations.

Wow... yeah the freaking idiot didn't remember the part in firearm safety about being sure of your target and what lies beyond.

Bryant is a member of the department's Organized Crime Unit. And across the hall in the janitor's closet is the unit that deals with organized crime.
