Liking and then unliking would not change the total number of likes at all, so to make it look like a drop they would have to wait a while. Considering the effort and miniscule amount of outcome (who cares if a page with over 10 million likes goes down one?) I doubt it would make any real impact on the numbers here.

I think that is exactly it. FB is mowing the astroturf. There are companies that use programs to create accounts and "like" other accounts. They have a signature, that I suspect has to do with: creation, do one thing, never log in again...

We are adding young people for the most part, because that is still the predominant fb demographic. People like Rubio will have next to zero likes before the media pumps him up for two weeks then he will have 1 million. It's how it works. however Ron Paul has been growing and growing steadily ever since I liked him on facebook way back 4 years ago when he only had around 100,000.

How is this possible? Google ‘buy twitter followers’ and you will see. The sites which offer this service actually do deliver the followers. It will add thousands of fake accounts that it has created in a matter of days and in some cases, a matter of hours. If you look at the chart above, you will see this is exactly what happened.

The same thing happened at the same time. As you can see in the chart above, Mitt had seen a steady rise in the number of Facebook likes, then, magically on August 1st a spike. At the same time, Romney set the lofty goal of reaching 3 million Facebook likes. Propaganda for the digital age – purchased popularity.

It's entirely possible Romney was buying likes, but whoever made that website has a very low IQ. It's politics. Some days big events happen and politicians will get 100+ times as many new likes in a single day. If you're keyed in on public sentiment, which the Pauls clearly are, then your likes go through through the roof. The public is light-years ahead of politicians on many things and the only politicians seemingly able to tap into that are the Pauls. Now give Rand the prominence and spotlight of a national debate stage and you're going to see tidal waves of people coming our way.

Gingrich did that with twitter too. I think it has become pretty common. When you see Romney's page come down in rolling chunks with minimal variation despite whatever is or isn't going on, it seems they 'ran out' of their funding for those accounts. I suspect those who fake it do it by buying chunks on a rolling basis to begin with varying in the 5Ks, 10Ks or whatever, to 'gradually ' build an appearance of popularity, then when the campaign starts people look and, gee! How popular they are!

I remember watching facebook at the debates or at key actions by various candidates during the campaign, and the real ones surged or fell based on things you could identify in the news -- a debate performance, a scandal, a drop in the polls..... those that just seemed to keep crunching despite what happened in real life, I always suspected were fake. It's pretty common now, I guess.

In the case of Romney, that will somewhat depend on whether his page is dormant or not. If it's still spewing Romney bullshit, I would not be surprised to see people actively ditching it.

Yeah, those are pretty huge gains for someone this far out from 2016. Rubio, Christie, Jindal, Bush, and Ryan aren't even close to the overall numbers or daily gains.

Not that this necessarily means anything but it's fun to compare... from what I can find Romney didn't reach 1 million likes until July 2011. That's around two months after the GOP debates started. And that's after the name recognition gained from running in 2008 and starting this cycle as the "front runner".

Rand is on pace to hit 1 million likes in May 2013, a full two years before the first GOP debate.

Spamming people to like a page won't draw them in as much as it will turn them off. Remember that both Rubio's GOP response, the fact that he's being pushed as a potential frontrunner, being pushed as someone who will draw in new blood, so on and so forth, that pushes him. Paul can make as many appearances and strategic moves as he wants, but unless the GOP machine begins to back him the same way it backs Rubio, Christie, Jeb Bush and so on, people will have to gradually gravitate toward him.

It's simple. Just do what we did with Ron: Link a story with backed up facts about Rand Paul and say a nice one or two sentence statement about Rand to promote him.

The only problem I see with this is that Rand doesn't have near the congressional record Ron does, and he hasn't exactly been 100% consistent with either his "libertarianism" or "republicanism." His bridging the two is still a work in progress, and should be noted as such.

I think the last person to get a major party nomination who had never won a statewide election was Wendell Wilkie in 1940.
As for a sitting member of congress, not for a long time.
William Jennings Bryan was a former congressman when he ran in 1896, and I think that was the highest office he had ever held.
Edit: I just looked it up and James Garfield was the only person to ever go directly from the House to the presidency. I don't know about nominees who lost.

Not that I found when I last looked at the numbers. Romney and Ryan have more likes overall, but they are still losing 1,000's a week each.

Huckabee has slightly more overall but he wasn't growing as quickly, and he even has a TV show on Fox to advertise on.

Sarah Palin has 3.5 million total but Rand has gained 3 times as many likes compared to her over the last month.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that Romney bought likes. You can find a bunch of places to buy from online. I read a story about a guy that runs a service and he said it's used a lot by music artists to get a jump start so that they look popular.

The Time Magazine cover is just honest and well deserved. Rand is definitely the fresh new face of the republican party. One could credibly argue that Rand has single handily controlled the GOP talking points and new pet issues. He was also the leading voice on the the most unifying stance the GOP has - 2nd amendment.
More than once he has been singled out by Obama attacks, McConnell has been following his lead, he is bridging the gap between the liberty movement and the tea party (which would be a strong GOP voter majority).

Its hard to make an argument that he isn't the most influential republican right now and one can easily see that if the momentum doesn't change he will continue to gain influence.

These are the same types of people who lambasted me months ago for bringing up the same subject, which makes me happy and disgusted at the same time. The sheeple are starting to like Rand because Faux news is covering him without the smears his father received for speaking of the same topics. Let's just hope they actually wake up and think for themselves before the election (doubtful). I want Rand to win, but I really want him to win because people are fed up and truly want their liberty, not just because he is the media's chosen candidate.

This is the part where you CEMENT all of the ideas they are supposedly supporting and if they ever go back on those, you may call them out for being inconsistent. Notice how a lot of the talking heads are forced to acknowledge their own contradictions or are weary of doing it on live television because they do support a lot of the things Rand Paul is talking about.

Rand still tearing it up big time. Consistently around 10x's the likes Rubio is getting.
Consistently in the top 20 on facebook on 'most shared posts'.

His 'past 7 days' numbers are staying right at 20,000. Very good growth.

Looking at charts is good to, nice and steady and doesn't look like any sudden growth spikes or anything. Just a steady upward climbing line.

Completely agree. She is regularly on the list of users with the highest "shares" for their posts.
Come to think of it ... would have to go back and look but I think conservatives in general get a lot more shares than liberals. If thats true color me encouraged!

Mike Huckabee seems to be the only comparable republican figure to Rand in terms of Facebook popularity.

Mike has just over a million likes and still growing very steadily and makes sever posts a day is usually a couple thousand ahead of Rand on the number of 'shares' their posts get. (both Rand and Mike are on the top 30 list of most shared very regularly).

Rand is growing at a faster pace than Huckabee but Huckabee's audience seems to have a little more loyalty. Luckily Huckabee is acting favorable towards Rand at the moment - we'll have to see if his spine disappears once the presidential race begins.

Huckabee really disappointed me with his behavior towards Ron. I would rather see him become irrelevant than anything but as long as people listen to him I want him on our side.

I actually have much more respect for Palin than I do Huckabee.

I think he'll hit 1,000,000 on June 15th. Current rate would have him coming in after that but I'm counting on a gradual increase as it gets closer.

Awesome, only 3,200 to go now. He's picked up the pace the last couple days. Almost 7,000 new likes on Friday.

Also, I hadn't noticed before that he took over the address Facebook.com/RandPaul. That used to just be a fan page and his official page was Facebook.com/RandPaul2010.

Rand didn't make the top 30 post shares yet today but supposedly nearly 300,000 people are talking about him. (as apposed to 7,150 talking about Rubio)

I wouldn't normally consider this to be a significant indicator but since Rubio and Paul were at one time neck and neck (for a while I was even getting nervous about Rubio Gaining) the huge difference in numbers does seem to be significant.
