Election 2012: In Arizona, GOP Jeff Flake Defeats Democrat Richard Carmona

Republican Jeff Flake has beaten former surgeon general Richard Carmona in the race to fill Arizona's U.S. Senate seat held by retiring Republican Sen. Jon Kyl.

Flake, a six-term Republican congressman, is best known for his fierce opposition to "earmarks" -- special requests for federal dollars for local pet projects such as roads and bridges. He said his opposition is a move away from patronage and a move toward basing funding for projects on merit.

Democrats recruited Carmona to run for Kyl's seat after it became clear that then-Rep. Gabrielle Giffords wouldn't campaign because of head injuries she suffered during the January 2011 shooting rampage in Tucson.

The race for the post became more competitive after Flake emerged from a bruising primary against a wealthy businessman, outside groups threw millions of dollars into the race and voters learned more about Carmona, who entered the race as an unknown to many Arizona voters.

Great, I guess... :)

Shouldn't he have had a sub-forum here?
Is he a libertarian?

Good news. One of those 80/20 situations, IIRC.

We had him rated as 3 star for purity.

Jeff Flake*(R) - (purity: ★★★☆☆)

Yes, he's not one of us, but he's better than a Dem.

I don't know much about him but there is something I cannot recall, now, from years ago, where I had an extremely negative opinion. It may have the SPP (N American Union) thing, but I'm not sure.

Not unless the NDAA is libertarian. I voted for Marc Victor, since he was the only US Senate candidate from AZ who wanted to restore Amendments I, IV, V, VI, and VIII.

Rumor is this ad put him over the top:

Yeah, that's pretty powerful.

It really is. I was shocked when I saw it the first time. Then Carmona tells the debate moderator that he's prettier than Candy Crowley (http://dailycaller.com/2012/10/19/carmona-calls-male-debate-moderator-prettier-than-candy-crowley/). LOL... That didn't help him in the misogynist department either.

Wow, that was good. It made him sound like some creepy stalker in a Lifetime movie.

The final House vote was in May 2012. Flake voted YAY! (http://politics.nytimes.com/congress/votes/112/house/2/291) on it, and NAY (http://politics.nytimes.com/congress/votes/112/house/2/290) on the Smith-Amash Amendment.

I know. The impression I got from it was that he forced himself on her in some way. I'm sure that's the impression team Flake wanted everyone to get! It worked. Carmona was pulling ahead before that ad came out.

Flake isn't great but he is a BIG improvement over the jerk he is replacing (Kyl). And he is better than Carmona - a former SWAT commander!!! Nothing like a taste for tactical brutality combined with a taste for state socialism. A heady mixture.

I think Flake was part of Ron Paul's Liberty Caucus.
