"The good news," Cuomo said of the promised 12 million gallons,

"is it's going to be free."

At least 1,000 drivers queued up at one site -- the Freeport Armory in Long Island -- only to be told the gasoline would not arrive for at least eight hours more, one driver said.

"There's just so many people getting very frustrated. People don't know what to do,'' said Lauren Popkoff, a teacher who had been in line for four hours.

The mobile station that opened in Queens was also swamped, NBCNewYork.com reported, with a line of cars stretching 20 blocks.

But the state Division of Military and Naval Affairs later issued an advisory asking the public to stay away from the mobile stations until more fuel is released.

NEW YORK — The line of cars at the free emergency fuel location on Staten Island is about two miles long.

What they need is to allow people to "price gouge." Too bad they don't understand basic economics and have outlawed that.

It is gas that was reserved for emergencies, and with the gas shortages in the area, this might qualify as a legitimate emergency. I have no problems with it being put out there, but it should go for maybe 2 bucks a gallon at least, but even free I don't really have a problem with considering the destruction in the area.

If they'd just get out of the way, you'd have these trucks filling up cars on every street corner. You'd have canisters being delivered to people's homes! Sure, those people would pay for it, but at least it'd be there! They wouldn't have to wait in lines! Think about the opportunity costs that each person is paying to get gas?!?!?! They're already paying over $20/gallon!

Free gas? This is just government's way of making idiots think they're working on things!

Sorry, I wasn't disparaging your post. If they have paid for gas, sure give it away. But dammit, do the other thing too! I know you were only talking about the first thing.

Is it just me? Or does something about this not seem legit...

Thousands of people lined up in hopes to receive 11,000 gallons of free gas being distributed by the military at the Bedford Avenue Armory in Crown Heights, Brooklyn on Novermber 3, 2012.

The epic fail in that photo? The guy with the 5 gallon bottled water jug that is going to wait in line all day to be told his polycarbonate jug is an unapproved container, even though it has "excellent" chemical resistance to gasoline.

Actually... I was wondering why everyone in that photo is a man. Women have the right to free gas too you know .

I'd be willing to make a bet that at least 50% of the people in that line do not have a car or a generator that would necessitate the gas they are getting. My guess? Many of them are waiting for the "free" gas to sell to someone who needs it. While I love the entrepreneurial nature of this venture, it just goes to demonstrate the absurdity of this idea.

Taxpayers then?

My guess is the taxpayers are just getting the gas they had paid for via various forms of taxes and then made to believe they are getting it for free.

YES! +rep w/ widely distributed, small-scale black-market price-gouging that the brick-and-mortar businesses were banned from.

The added perk is tptb get good odds to post pictures the following day of the couple of lowly heathens the city's brave police actually catch in the act; go team go!

I see this picture and somehow I have the feeling that there are going to be a few extra house fires this coming week in NY. Just that many Petrol containers in a city area is just asking for trouble and that is even in the hands of professionals.

The message you have entered is too short? WTF

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, I just didn't want to be the first one to put it out there (just in case a mod got the wrong impression).

Though I'm sure the intention was good, passing out thousands of gallons of free gas in the middle of Brooklyn when a gallon is going for over $20 on the black market was not a very smart idea.

I'm thinking that "free gas" would be a great way for tptb to round up some of the sheep. Why go thru all the trouble of door to door when they will just line up on their own.
