New Jersey (http://topics.bloomberg.com/new-jersey/) Governor Chris Christie (http://topics.bloomberg.com/chris-christie/) declared a state of emergency yesterday, as Hurricane Sandy barreled toward the U.S. East Coast and appeared headed to strike land near Delaware (http://topics.bloomberg.com/delaware/) Bay.
Christie said the state is prepared for hurricane-force winds along portions of New Jersey’s Atlantic Ocean coastline. Delaware Bay separates Delaware from the southern coastline of New Jersey.
The governor ordered the mandatory evacuation of all the state’s barrier islands south of Sandy Hook and the closing of the state’s 12 casinos, both at
4 p.m. today.
In New York City (http://topics.bloomberg.com/new-york-city/), plans are being made to start closing down subway, bus, and commuter train systems at
7 p.m. today.
“No decisions have been made yet, but the planning is going on,” Lhota said. “All of our 8.5 million daily customers need to prepare for the storm and be ready to complete their travels by 7 p.m. Sunday.”

The first evacuations in New York have been ordered on Fire Island. Residents are to leave by
2 p.m. Sunday,
the Islip town supervisor said.
[]
City parks would close at 5 p.m. Sunday, the mayor said.
[]
The city is opening shelters in 65 public schools on Sunday for residents who are concerned that their homes in flood-prone areas will be affected.
----------------
Several Connecticut shoreline municipalities are calling for evacuations of low-lying areas.
Bridgeport and Fairfield are issuing evacuation orders for vulnerable communities effective as of
noon Sunday.

"Folks, this could be bad, really bad. It could impact us in several ways and for a long period of time," Malloy said. "Please take it seriously as we are taking it. We are talking about a potential for high number of power outages and for an extended period of time. We are talking about severe flooding."

Location: the Atlantic coast of New Jersey and Delaware.
Coastal flooding: major coastal flooding is forecast for the Monday morning and Monday evening high tides. Moderate coastal flooding is forecast for this evenings high tide and widespread minor flooding is expected with this mornings high tide cycle.
High Surf of 15 to 20 feet driven by frequent 50 to 60 mph wind gusts will contribute to the flooding on Monday. Especially Monday evening.
A 4 to 8 feet storm surge coinciding with the Monday evening high tide is likely to produce a record flood as measured at Sandy Hook, possibly 1 to 2 feet higher than ever recorded
