Change will only come to the public sector when moral college students are politically engaged, U.S. Rep. Justin Amash (R-Cascade Township) said earlier this week.

“It’s really on your generation to start to speak up and to understand these things,” he said. “It’s up to you not to believe everything politicians are selling you these days.”

Amash came to Cornerstone University with one agenda: he wanted to motivate young adults to care about politics. In his official capacity, Amash talked to the college student audience about limited government, individual liberty and economic freedom. In the past two years, Amash has made a name for himself on Capitol Hill by not always going along with the Republican agenda. Instead, he said he enjoys standing for every piece of legislation that upholds the aforementioned rights, knowing that is why he was elected into the position in the first place.

Amash said he has tried to bring new ideas with him to Congress, but said it has been made more difficult by older Congress members who desire to keep the same laws in place.

“Sometimes, the people who have been there for a long time get set in their ways - and they lose sight of what the real important things are in life,” he said. ”It doesn’t mean that they are right. A lot of our problems we have in Congress stem from the fact that they’ve been there a really long time.”

But, he said it doesn’t matter, because he knows that he is held responsible for caring for the individual liberties of the people in 3rd Congressional District, which includes many CU students. In the spirit of transparency, Amash told his young constituents that politicians have been deceiving them on certain economic issues, like the federal debt and cuts in military funding.
