As a rule, government people aren't IT people. At least, in my experience. The kids at the schools hack the system all the time.

Haley urged anyone who has paid taxes in the state since 1998 to call 1-866-578-5422.
The state will provide services for anyone affected. You can sign up by calling that number or ask for an activation code to use at protectmyid.com/scdor (http://www2.wbtw.com/admin/content/article/4834202/protectmyid.com/scdor)

I hope everyone knows what is going on here. This is only the last in a loooong string of thefts of personal/financial information. It's the lead up to a devastating financial attack where everyone financial lives are attacked! The collapse of the entire system!

I just saw on the local news that the SC DOR is now admitting that business tax records were also hacked, not just personal records. Who knows how much information was stolen in this breach.

SC has offered its citizens one "free" year of Experian identity protection. I have chosen to pass on this, and if I happen to incur some damages because of this incident I will file a suit against the state for negligence. I'm a firm believer in the criminal always being the one who is responsible, but in the case of the state and a database of citizens personal information, I will make an exception.

I keep pondering the motives for this. I wish we knew more of the perpetrators.

He wants 4 MILLION people to call a phone number... WOW!

What could possibly go wrong???

And then, the state taxpayers with will pay for the states negligence in time and money to determine, after the fact, if they were ripped off. What's more, the monitoring will only be done by one of the big 3 credit agencies, so I guess 2/3rds of the thefts will get a pass.

Wouldn't it make more sense to change everyone's CC number and put all the old numbers on a "hot" list and follow where the money goes and where the requests came from so someone might actually get busted?

Then again, we hear every couple of months about a DHS or FBI laptop getting lifted with at least as much info. They probably don't have enough CC numbers to give everyone a new one.

A former SC Senator is already ahead of you with a lawsuit being filed, seeking class action status.

I kinda feel like all of it was stolen already. Now someone else wants in on the action.
