(not just for the forum folks...)Because unless the candidate is registered as a write-in, the vote goes directly into the trash. Might as well vote Johnson or not vote at all.

I've read this before, and I'm genuinely curious. Do they literally throw out your whole ballot?? Because there are actually two liberty candidates ON my ballot, and I want to write in Ron Paul as well.

They have to count the undervote. That is the difference between the number of people who vote at all, and those who vote for 'official' choices on the ballot for President. It is a catch all 'none of the above' category, and for me would have been the closest to how I feel after voting for Ron Paul. People who think Johnson is almost as good as Ron might feel differently, but to me, he just isn't my candidate and saying I might as well vote for him is like saying I might as well vote for Stein. So I wrote in Ron Paul as well -- however, it looks like California will count Ron Paul write ins -- the official news will be on the Secretary of State web page, later today!

Too bad, I don't think we can do that in CA. I'll vote for Gary Johnson instead, even though he is a very watered down Ron Paul.

I don't know how it works in other states. As long as you stay within the lines, in NH, all of the write-in votes are counted. All of the penciled in votes are also counted. It's all counted.

Actually, I understand we were successful in getting Ron Paul to be a certified write in candidate in CA, although I think the people picking Judge Nap for VP got their forms counted first, so he will likely be VP candidate. From that group's web page they are near Sacramento and walked them in and went over them while they stood there. So the certification should be up on the Secretary of State web page after today.

On AFs form it looks like it says "President and Vice President".

Do we need to write "Ron Paul/Andrew Napolitano" in States where Ron Paul is a certified write-in candidate?

North Carolina does report the write-ins on a line underneath the qualified candidates. It's basically a way of voting "None of the Above".

1/3 of a percent of the 2008 presidential tally was write-in.

In some states it matters. In WA you have to write in party and FULL name. but in CA you only have to write in the position (president) and 'Ron Paul'

people need to know this info. my main concern is people not having their votes counted, or having some rural poll worker just add the write-in tally to the drone candidate of their choice. after all, most SOS report forms won't have a write-in spot in some states, thus the total number of votes wouldn't equal votes counted. this allows them to "vote flip" in a loose sense.

Ron did caution us to follow up to pressure them to count the votes. I had to ride them in my county for them to do it in 2008 but they did, finally.

If they are going to outright cheat, we don't have a way to prevent it even if they are on the ballot.

Ronald Paul ... Ron Paul ... it does not matter to me. They are the same guy. If they don't count my vote ... then that just confirms that my vote has never counted anyway. Nonetheless, my conscience is clear. I voted for liberty.

I think it varies by state. I am pretty sure in Utah what they do is they count the ballots. They only go thru and tally write-ins if (Total Write-ins > Highest vote getter of the "legitimate" choices) Otherwise they just lump all write-ins into "Other" - they still report it, but the Ron Paul votes get lumped in with Mickey Mouse, Jesus, etc.
