Foreign policy, military funding and plans for U.S. troops abroad are providing plenty of chewy campaign fodder for President Barack Obama and his GOP rival, Mitt Romney. But fundraising reports shed light on what the armed forces think about the the candidates.

Former Republican presidential hopeful Ron Paul received significant support from the military for his strong stance on bringing troops home, and that briefly continued even after Romney pulled ahead as the clear GOP candidate.

Now, though, the military's support has shifted toward Obama. Romney has consistently received little financial backing from military donors.

Despite the fact that Paul once raised almost twice as much as Obama did from the military, the president has received $536,414 from military donors, compared to Paul's $399,274 and Romney's $287,435, according to research by the Center for Responsive Politics. These numbers are based on donations greater than $200, as reported to the Federal Election Commission.

Below is a table of contributions from military and civilian employees of the military for the 2012 election cycle:

Obama didn't pass Ron until March.

The military isn't as stupid as Romney thinks they are. They know that if elected Romney will be throwing them into a useless war in Iran just to help Israel. These men and women aren't afraid to fight - they just don't want their lives wasted for the sake of another country (Israel) and not their own. They know that only Paul or Obama will try to keep us out of wasteful wars. And they are right.

I expect this will become important news all of the sudden, minus the Ron Paul part.

As bad as Obama is, he still looks less worse on foreign policy than Romney. Romney is out there campaigning on being even MORE pro-war and interventionist.

i think the low point ( got very little press ) of ryans debate was when they were talking about when obama drew down surg troops from afgh , ryan said they should been sent to eastern afgh where the heavy fighting was going on .

biden said we have trained hundards of thousands of afgh troops , they were sent to eastern afgh to fight and die for their own country, not american gi's .

biden ==1 ryan ==0

but but but the GOP statists have been regurgitating lately that Romney leads Obama in polls with military by something like 65%-35%.

I know a lot of people here at Camp Leatherneck are apathetic to the whole election because they know whichever scumbag gets elected, they're the ones who are going to have to pay the price. So, I've been talking up Gary Johnson and leaving Oathkeepers flyers around.

That is all they have to report, so it is all opensecrets has.

That must be a poll of Republicans in the military. If that is the case then Romney isn't doing so well with them.

Who knows. Whenever a poll shows Obama winning I always hear that the sample is bad or skewed. When a poll shows Romney winning it must be true.

Not everyone donates. This only shows preference amongst those donating.

Then it is likely only counting officer and senior enlisted. Most enlisted would have less than 200 to contribute and they comprise the majority of those in the military so it puts the point of the article in question.

Not sure what the rules are on that for you, but I see that organization much like I see FIJA. People need to see such things, and they make a lot of sense without a lot of thought. They simply need to be stated in plain terms where people can see them and I think they can make a big difference.

It is $200 over the course of the campaign, not necessarily all at once.
