The potential of humanity is truly amazing. All it requires, is for them to be free, and that's the beautiful part.

Yeah well, if that started to happen to me at 100,000 ft and looking at earth, well, yikes.

Kittinger set his marks for the highest, farthest, and longest freefall when he leapt from a helium envelope in 1960. His altitude was 102,800ft (31km). (His record for the longest freefall remains intact - he fell for more than four and a half minutes before deploying his chute; Baumgartner was in freefall for four minutes and 20 seconds).

DH and I wondered if Baumgartner left that record intact intentionally.

Baumgartner was in a really nasty spin. I think he was happy to come out of the spin and didn't want to risk another one.

That was amazing. I am still awestruck. That spin was frightening, knowing it could have killed him.

Angela, he says he deployed his chute early because his mask fogged up and he couldn't see.

The sense of impending doom rose roughly two thirds of the way through the ascent, when it emerged that a “minor issue” had developed with Baumgartner’s heated face-mask, which was steaming up. Organisers attempted to “trouble-shoot” it, and for a time considered calling the jump off. But eventually they decided to throw caution to the wind.

That decision didn’t always look questionable. A short while into the jump he appeared to be tumbling end over end, and those watching would have been forgiven for fearing the worst. Three minutes in, after righting that wobble, Baumgartner declared over the radio: “My face mask is fogging up! Repeat. My facemask is fogging up!”

He then decided to open the parachute slightly earlier than planned (http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/one-small-step-skydiver-felix-baumgartner-lands-safely-after-jump-from-24-miles-high-8211058.html), a precautionary move which helped him return safe and sound, but may also have prevented him from breaking the world record for “longest freefall.”

In my old job I used to drive people to the Philly airport from Ft Dix/McGuire AFB. I had a special forces guy on board one morning who was telling me that the military uses sky divers to infiltrate airspace. That there is an equasion for how far one can fly for how far up you are when you drop out of the plane. What blew me away was how far they can fly. For every 10,000 feet i elevation, you can fly 100 miles in distance. So, 50,000 feet is 500 miles.
100,000 feet is 1,000 miles. I would love to see the next record being set on how far a person can fly.

Obviously skydiving needs to be regulated by the government before somebody gets hurt.

Redbull is blowing it not getting more footage out sooner. Even this video isn't on their official page. I think he had leg cameras and the chest camera. Why not put it out sooner? 24 hour news cycle and all.

I can't believe this privately funded space feat hasn't been featured on LRC or reason. W.T.H. Lew hasn't said a word about it, and reason only linked to a news piece on 24/7.
