I dont like the TSA and am not particularly fond of airlines trying to pass off five whole plastic wrapped peanuts as an in meal flight, but I dont see any reason to to even so much as point a cat toy laser at an airplane, unless the person wants to be arrested, which we all know damn well by now gambles with your life.

Laser strikes against airplanes now an "epidemic," says FBI

You may not be the kind of person who gets his kicks by standing at the end of a runway and firing a small laser into the cockpit of jets during their takeoffs and landings—but plenty of other people are. In 2005, the FBI only heard about 283 such incidents; this year, it expects to record 3,700.

In an official blog post about the topic, the FBI quotes federal air marshal George Johnson saying that the laser attacks have reached an "epidemic level." Things have gotten so bad that the FBI has created a special group to address the issue, one with the unwieldy name "Laser Strike Working Group National Initiative" (which could use a laser strike of its own).

In its blog post, the FBI quotes Captain Robert Hamilton of the Air Line Pilots Association, who describes what it's like to take a direct cockpit hit from a laser beam. "I had temporary blindness. My eyes were burning. It caused disorientation, and it was distracting," he said.

In 2011, a Boston court gave a 52-year old man three years in jail for shining a power laser at planes and helicopters in the area. Here's how our own Matt Lasar summed up the incident after reading the court docs:

On the night of December 8, 2007, Massachusetts State Police Sergeant Timothy Riley and State Trooper Michael Basteri were flying a helicopter over Boston Harbor. It was about 9:30pm and they were escorting a tanker carrying liquid natural gas. The chopper hovered over the Mystic River somewhere between the Distrigas facility in Everett and the Tobin Bridge.

Suddenly Trooper Basteri saw the laser—a powerful green beam coming from the shore. It snaked across the water and up towards the helicopter's cockpit. Basteri warned Riley that the blast of light was imminent, and warned him not to look at it.

Riley in turn quickly struggled to bank the copter to the right so the beam wouldn't penetrate the vehicle. But the concentrated stream moved too fast. "When the laser beam reached the helicopter it immediately filled the cockpit with an intense bright green light unlike anything either man had experienced before," the affidavit said.

After the beam left their vehicle, Riley and Basteri began trying to track it down. To their alarm, it started shining on landing paths at Logan Airport. They called Logan Airport Tower to alert air traffic control, then received permission from their command to leave the tanker and locate the origin of the threat.

What does it look like when a helicopter tracks down a guy with a laser? The FBI released the video we included at the top of this post to show you exactly what happens. Those caught could face up to five years in jail and up to an $11,000 fine

That stuff keeps up and we won't be able to buy laser pointers in the future.

What the heck is a 52 year old man doing? Kids I get - they don't know better.

I was curious why our tax money was being used to escort what is likely a private shipment.

Why would someone do such a thing?

Also, what kind of laser did this guy have? Seemed really powerful, can cause temporary blindness from that far away?

not a cat toy laser .. we have one of those.. it's red and tiny.. doesn't shine past around 50 foot

It is very difficult, if not impossible, to hit an airliner with a laser, or any airplane for that matter.

A helicopter is much easier especially if it's standing still.

They sell these awesome very high power green lasers from China on www.DealExtreme.com although of course you should behave responsibly with it because it can catch things on fire, blind people, etc.

Who paid for this escort?

Perfect opportunity for a drone strike.

I like how it took 10 guys to arrest a man with a laser pointer.

Remember when Rand was the sole No vote on this very issue?

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/44/2011/02/rand-paul-lone-dissenter-in-la.html

Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul was the sole "no" vote Thursday night on a measure that would make it a federal crime to aim a handheld laser pointer at an aircraft.

The measure, offered by Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) as an amendment to a measure on funding the Federal Aviation Administration, passed on a 96-to-1 vote, with three senators not present. It would call for anyone who knowingly aims the beam of a laser pointer at an aircraft to face fines or a prison term of up to five years.

Paul told reporters after Thursday's vote that he believed the laser-pointer issue was one best handled by the states, not the federal government.

"There are a lot of states that already have laws, and I think states ought to take care of it," Paul said.

Perfect opportunity for a drone strike.

So anyone that wants to take out someone and get away with it can just remotely control a laser at the location of the target to shine at airplanes and helicopters? The government won't win a war against those that desire freedom with everything inside of them. Everyday more is learned about their responses to lame attacks such as these. They are not prepared for guerrilla warfare with those that surpass their intelligence by over 50 IQ points easy. They ordered those hollow point bullets for a reason, they are scared.

I didn't see any on that site, but this one has some serious ones.

What happened to kids and people digging holes in the ground with a stick? Damn kids with lasers and iphones and computers.

I was allmost done with a really long and detailed reply when the F'n browser crashed, so just a couple of things...

5mw is not a very high powered laser. It's a cat toy or laser pointer.

It's been getting harder to get really good, powerful lasers if you are into doing laser light shows or holography.

There are several lasers designed specifically for signalling aircraft in survival situations, so congresses law is a joke. They have been used - including the laser pointer class, for blinding surveillance camera's. TPTB has been trying to restrict them for a while. Like years.

This is making feel old as I haven't looked into them in a while, and was most familiar with the 5 Watt HeNe variety that is good for small audiences and painting designs or images as well as the Argon ones that are used for things like rock concerts and raves. Have to look into the new technology...

http://www.laserist.org/guide-to-laser-shows.htm

Laser powers and visibility

The power of a laser beam is measured in watts and milliwatts (1/1000 watt). The minimum power needed for a laser light show in a dark, medium-sized room (like a hotel ballroom) is about 500 milliwatts to 1 watt. Somewhere between 5 and 20 watts is typical for indoor use. In large arenas and outdoors, 10 to 80 watts is common.

Wattage alone does not determine how visible the beam will be. For example, a 1 watt green laser beam can appear as bright as a 3 watt red beam, since the eye sees green light better than red or green. Therefore, when deciding how much laser power to use for your show, there are many factors the laser company will consider. These include:
...

Before 2000, most large laser shows used bulky argon or krypton gas lasers which required 220 to 440 volts, and around 2 gallons of water per minute for cooling.

Fortunately, in recent years new solid-state lasers such as "DPSS" and "YAG" types have become widespread. The lasers themselves are small enough to be easily carried by one person. Some have a form factor and features similar to conventional lighting instruments. They can run from a standard wall outlet (e.g., 110 volts in the U.S.), and are air-cooled by simple fans.

These new lasers have revolutionized shows. They make all aspects of show production easier, from freight to location flexibility. It has also made it easier for venues and lighting companies to own and run their own laser equipment, rather than needing specialists in electricity, tubes and plumbing.

at 7.5 Watts - this is pretty wimpy...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08qTFKgOzw8

still pretty low power and indoors, but it should give you an idea on application:

This is a pathetic 400mw

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3uGqZwgBY0&feature=related

Better color spectrum, but still indoors and low power. Several lasers ranging from 500mw to 1W

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0L8_Kzxakg&feature=related

Rather bummed that I'm not finding any vids in the 40-80 Watt range where it's projected directly into the atmosphere. Truely spectacular!

Whatever hit that helo, it sure wasn't a laser pointer...

It was probably hit with one of the survival signaling lasers. They are not common, the testimony seems very exaggerated and I think the article is BS.

Why would someone do such a thing?

Sounds like people are unhappy with the current state of aviation and have little they can do about it. Sounds like a very light form of civil disobedience to me.
