Second To None (http://secondtonone.org/what-our-leaders-are-saying)

What Our Leaders Are Saying

"Under current law, on January 1, 2013, there’s going to be a massive fiscal cliff of large spending cuts and tax increases,” Bernanke told the House Financial Services Committee. “I hope that Congress will look at that and figure out ways to achieve the same long-run fiscal improvement without having it all happen at one date."
— Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke

"The first responsibility of government is to protect the American people. It’s important to have priorities and a strategy and know what you would like to do and then fund against those priorities and those strategies."
— Former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld

"When commenting on the effects of sequestration: “Our military will cease to operate as we know it today. They can’t. They don’t have the resources. We will not be able to have the presence that we need to have in certain areas of this world. And it’s frightening."
— Rep. Martha Roby

"[W]hen it comes to what’s going to happen to our military with these cuts in January, you can imagine that there are a lot of people concerned. The Defense Secretary’s made clear that these cuts will devastate out ability to keep our country safe. The White House has admitted that these cuts will have a devastating impact on our military. So where is their plan? It’s as simple as that."
— Speaker of the House John Boehner

"If the Congress is irresponsible enough to suddenly turn on this sequester idea because they failed to meet their responsibility, that would clearly damage our national defense."
— Defense Secretary Leon Panetta

"I believe in free enterprise, I believe in freedom, I believe in liberty, I believe in an opportunity society. And everything I do will be designed to strengthen the values of this country, to strengthen the families of this country, to strengthen our economy and to keep a military that is second to none in the world."
— Mitt Romney, presidential candidate

"If there’s one thing that we have bipartisan agreement on, if there’s one area where we agree with the president and the secretary of defense, it’s that this sequester will decimate our military at a time when our men and women are overseas fighting in a war, in a world that has become much more dangerous."
— Rep. Paul Ryan

Fear, fear, and more fear. Duck under your desks children, if sequestration happens, then big government can't protect you anymore.

Evidently, the War Economy is simply too profitable to let it perish.

What did these people think the wars would never be over?

Wait, don't answer that.

I really think we would be slightly better off if contractors were scrapped and we went back to having units in the military do all the logistical tasks. Contractors have become nasty public-private arrangements intended to save money, but considering that they turn around and lobby congress to keep the wars going, are private contractors really saving us money?

Do we still have Sea-Bees anymore?

Yeah, a lot of angry defense contractors. It will be interesting to see if my congressman still supports the Empire, or if he sees the writing on the wall. He is in a tough place. There are a lot of military contractors around here.

Where I live, as well. Lockheed Martin is a BIG employer and they're already laying off 550.

And speaking of that, I heard that these companies are required to give 60 days' notice for layoffs. Which means....about now...or by the end of October? What to do, what to do?

No one that I know suggests that we are in less dangerous times, in fact the reverse is true. - Marion Blakely

It is called blowback Marion.

Cyber warfare, the terrorism threat that is out there, unrest, Iraq, Afghanistan still, but think about North Korea, Iran, and China is becoming a true competitor. - Marion Blakely
Unrest eh? Interesting. Well that IS kind of scary... for sure.

Now all of this argues for the United States maintaining its technological edge. That's what frankly has given us the kind of unlevel playing field that has worked so well all this time, but we are not going into a period that is safer. - Marion Blakely
There are probably a lot of people around the world that are pretty angry at us for killing their brothers and sisters and destroying their land. Again, it's blowback we have to worry about now.

Going back to the Constitution, if you read the Constitution right up front, it says that our government is to provide for the common defense. -Marion Blakely
I think you are reading the Constitution wrong, Marion. Defense not Offense

It is a real stretch to claim that we are defending our country while warmongering on the Middle East.

So yes it is a responsibility and it is the case, that in this day and age, the United States is the world's only super-power. We have a responsibility, like it or not, to help maintain global peace and global security. - Marion Blakely
How is that working out Marion? There are at least 5000 Americans dead so far from militarism this century and God only knows how many innocent foreigners we've killed in the process. War is not really Peace, Marion. Really, it's not.

I don't think we want others, suddenly, able to change the seaways, able to dominate from the air. There has not been a U.S. service member lost from an air attack since the 50's. And that's because we have air dominance anywhere we go. I think we want to maintain that kind of protection for our troops and our allies. - Marion Blakely

How about the 3000 Americans on September 11, 2001? We kind of lost air dominance that day, didn't we? So much so that they attacked the most protected air space in the world. How did that happen? And you need more money? Why don't you work for free if you are so concerned about it? You can stop picking my pockets for your shenanigans anytime now.

The Fiscal Cliff means any Federal budget cuts whatsoever from anywhere in the budget and means the GDP will fall below 0% growth and accumulated debts will not be able to be serviced and will default.

The Federal Reserve and the Federal Government work together to keep the GDP above a certain level so debts to the Banks can continue to be serviced.

Did anyone else notice that the speaker said 3.4 Million jobs, but the graphics said 2.4 Million jobs?

Did anyone else notice that they are implying via numbers that the ENTIRE aerospace / defense industry is going to be toast if these cuts take place?
