View Full Version : Pro-Liberty columnists? (For English class)

One of my yearlong assignments in my AP English class is to find a columnist who, writing weekly, interests us. We can choose any topic (sports, politics, etc). Obviously, politics is what interests me the most. My question is: do you guys know of any columnists whom write weekly and at least have views that lean on libertarian?

I am to follow this columnist from now until May, so I hope I can enjoy his/her writing style. I don't normally read papers or OP/eds. If you guys can help me with, thanks a lot!

Check out Glenn Greenwald. He's not a libertarian, but he kicks ass on civil liberties, anti-war, & holding the government accountable for its misdeeds.

(Greenwald just moved from Slate to the Guardian, IIRC).

Does it have to be a syndicated column or otherwise printed in dead-tree form? If so, Walter Williams is pretty well known and respected. Print media is mostly a wasteland.

Check out the columns on Townhall and Human Events. I enjoy Stossel, Williams, Sowell, Buchanan, etc.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I will be sure to check each of them out.

As to specifications: there are none. It can be print only, online only, or a combination of both. It is just preferred they are regular writers (around weekly) so I can follow them up on numerous issues as the school year continues.

lewrockwell.com FTW. There are a handful of contributors who write at least once a week.

I would second that recommendation! I've always enjoyed reading Williams' work. I can't say I agree 100% with all his views, but he usually writes one hell of a column.

Some of his stuff can be downright incendiary. One recent column started out:

http://econfaculty.gmu.edu/wew/articles/12/EducationalLunacy.htm

If I were a Klansman, wanting to sabotage black education, I couldn’t find better allies than education establishment liberals and officials in the Obama administration, especially Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, who in March 2010 announced that his department was “going to reinvigorate civil rights enforcement.”

Here is a link to Williams' faculty page (including links to his columns) at George Mason University:

I always thought Walter Williams would have made a good VP choice for Ron Paul, if Ron hadn't been screwed out of the nomination.

As others have mentioned, Walter Williams and Thomas Sowell are good choices

Try Joel Skousen and his World Affairs Brief weekly newsletter:
http://www.worldaffairsbrief.com/
Actually it's a paid subscription newsletter, but I'm almost certain that if you contact him and request a free subscription and mention it's for a high school project, he would oblige:

Here's a couple more from Townhall, but you really have to wade through a lot of neocons to find the liberty minded columnists there.
