Eastwood visited with Ellen DeGeneres yesterday to discuss his new movie, but also some of the reaction to his speech at the RNC, libertarianism, and his view on gay marriage.

The relevant part is within the first three minutes of the video. It was great to hear the reaction from the audience after Eastwood described libertarianism, the political philosophy to which he subscribes:

How are people to do that without permission from the government? Not everyone can live in your la la land.

Why get permission?

Because you need permission to get married. You think you can just go and have a religious ceremony and call that a marriage without telling the government?

aGameOfThrones, you do realize same sex couples suffer from the current tax code? All they need to do is get married (in secret) and never tell the state, thats it.

This conversation is so beyond the average american mind. The chances you would run into another person who thinks like this in person is next to none which means there is a lot of education to do.

Thats why we are on here in the first place, most seem to just get it. This is a place where people can go to actually feel sane sometimes.

I think there should be gay marriage.

However, I never liked "cultural conservatives" anyways. These people tend to believe in populism and very liberal ideas and protectionism, but they demand to regular drugs, porn, marriage, and culture.

Basically, I find them annoying so whatever they are supporting, I'm generally against.

Government is the only institution that can take a religious ceremony like marriage, and make it worth something by defining IT.

You know. I'm not going to accuse you of demanding purity. I can understand why you don't want libertarianism to get 'watered down'. But Eastwood doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who is looking to profit or increase his political standing by adopting libertarianism (in which case, we should certainly be skeptical). Frankly, when he said, libertarianism is basically a philosophy of 'leave everybody alone', I think he gets it. At least, he's off to a good start.

I agree, I liked his RNC speech. I caught part of it live while it was airing and at first thought the same thing. Then I went back and watched the whole clip. Judging by the media reaction afterwords, both on conservative talk shows and left wing, I'm guessing he either went off script a little bit, or some of what he said was felt to be a little subversive.

Anyway it's great to see him out talking about libertariansim. I think there are more celebrities who lean libertarian or conservative, but there is so much pressure not to be open about it....just look at what happened to Kelly Clarkson, just for expressing mild support for Ron Paul.

I completely disagree. I think he went off script a whole lot. AND it was felt to be subversive.

I was never so much of an Eastwood fan as I am now.

Anyway I liked Ron's reaction to it on Jay Leno too. I think he was amused.

I'm pretty sure Eastwood has been a libertarian for most of his life. It's not some new thing he's just discovering.

I'm pretty sure Eastwood has been a libertarian for most of his life. It's not some new thing he's just discovering.

I was not clear. I didn't mean to imply that Eastwood suddenly made the switch. I said "adopting libertarianism" in reference to someone like Glenn Beck's 'awakening' because Beck just wanted to tap that audience and ride the anti- gov. wave to sell books and stuff. People like Glenn Beck are opportunists. But I don't believe Clint Eastwood is.

Eastwood is already a successful movie star, and he served one term as a mayor in a small town back in the 80s. So at this point, I think whatever he says is just what's on his mind, not necessarily something he's saying for personal gain.
