Marketplace ran a segment asking what's not currently taxed that should be taxed.

One of the featured responses: A citizenship tax, $1200 per year.

Does that include EVERYONE. Including those on welfare? Or do they get some kinda special dispensation?

If a tax like that came into place, I would move to New Hampshire and join a local militia (which would be started if this tax came into being)

I'm pretty sure they already tax social security payouts, I'll never know though as I'll never see social security money at this rate.

I think a National Lottery would be great...

Which would then demonstrate how cheap the $450 fee to renounce your citizenship actually is. A bargain by all measures.

Seriously? There is really a $450 fee to renounce your citizenship? Seriously???

I heard this too a few days ago and had the same reaction. The scary part is that was the second one there was, the first one was a "gas tax" last I checked we already had one of those lol.

The entire tax structure is a citizenship tax... if you don't pay them you can have your liberty taken by others.

I like the idea of a stupidity tax.

If you do something that can be percieved as stupid, you get a tax. EG: Attempting to remove an outlet from a live circuit=tax.

Sometimes, there are legitimate reasons to work on live circuits. And really, if you can't switch an outlet on a live circuit, you probably just shouldn't be touching an outlet in the first place. Maybe a "zap" tax instead.

Funny how liberals tend to make fun of conservatives for holding nationalistic views. Pot, meet kettle.

Well, duh. The answer to this one is obvious.

We should institute a new tax to be imposed on anyone who advocates the imposition of new taxes on anyone (with, of course, the sole exception of this new tax).

It would work like this: as soon as you advocate a new tax, you immediately become subject to that tax.

No one else would be required to pay the tax - unless and until they start advocating for it.

We could call it the YPI tax (for "You Propose It, You Pay It").

*That* would shut all those yahoos up toot sweet.

If it were the only tax, it would be the ultimate flat tax. Take the total spending and divide by the number of citizens. Can't get any flatter! If it was always like this with no bullshit, I bet Federal taxes would be about $250 a person. Of course, the truth is that we could fund sufficient defense with tariffs and excise taxes alone. Those have a rate limiting affect - too high and your revenue goes down as evasion or alternatives becomes profitable.

Hey now! I do side work with an electrician and change out quite a few 'live' outlets. 'Course I'm paid in cash so....:D

No, it is tied to the Income Tax, a tax based on Federal privileged activity.

A citizenship tax is just what we need to convince Americans to start fleeing to Canada and Mexico. If it were actually enforced, as in the IRS going out to round up and jail the people who don't pay, there would be a mass exodus of poor people from this country. What a nightmare... our prison populations would grow exponentially.

Politician tax. Politicians should have 100% of their income taxed until they leave office, at which point their constituency may decide to give their former representative a tax refund, or deny that refund, if unhappy with the politican's performance.

We should tax everyone who fails to join a militia and bring a weapon suitable for war.
