View Full Version : ATL meetup group I-75 Billboard

Hey folks,
Here is the thread where we can post our ideas about the billboard.

wgadget
11-19-2007, 09:07 AM
LOL. We have relocated.

wgadget
11-19-2007, 09:20 AM
Okay, non-Atlanta people. The issue is this:

WHAT do we put on our billboard? We are wanting something short, sweet, and to the point, something that people can read going 70mph, and something that will get their attention enough to make them research Ron Paul.

Any suggestions are welcome. (We were flooding our inboxes with meetup emails, thus the relocation.)

Thanks, NeoConned.

Ya, rookie mistake on my part for not taking it from the list to begin with. At any rate, here is an example rough draft of the general direction I was thinking of for the sign. Cade is having eric work on some stuff as well and two of my buddies said they might be able to work on it tonight too.

But you MUST put "for President" somewhere on there...A lot of people never heard of him.

nullvalu
11-19-2007, 09:45 AM
Yep.. And while I agree with "What he stands for is bigger than any party", this makes him sound like he's running on a 3rd party ticket, if i read that on a billboard.

NeoConned
11-19-2007, 09:47 AM
Of course. This was just to give everyone a general idea of what's possible look wise....not the final text or anything like that. Just trying to get a feel of what ppl think of the photo used, color scheme of the text etc.......not really what the text says.

Cindy

I like the direction that is going in. Just needs the word President on there somewhere.

Looks awesome, put "For President" on there.

You could also do something like was mentioned in the other thread by Bryan:

That's a pretty good idea, real eye getter too.

dante

personally I have never liked that picture of the Dr. Its not the warm and inviting man we all know him to be. Why not a picture of him smiling?

wgadget
11-19-2007, 10:01 AM
While I LIKE this picture, I don't like it nearly as much as the one with him smiling, as on the newer slimjim. Just my opinion. I think I'd also forgo the little line about "any party," although I do appreciate the sentiment.

Ridiculous
11-19-2007, 10:06 AM
Definitely needs for president and definitely needs to say you aren't part of the official campaign. A smiling picture of him might be better.

Two questions:

When will this billboard make its debut?

Where on I-75 will it be located and which driving direction will it face?

(Considering placing an ad in a newspaper in the metro area, would be nice to time it so it hits when this billboard does.)

JerzieJennie
11-19-2007, 10:47 AM
"paid for by volunteers supporting Ron Paul" or something to that effect is absolutely critical.

NeoConned
11-19-2007, 10:52 AM
It would be on I-75 southbound as it was explained to me that ppl are fresh in the morning and more prone to view the signs, then have all day at work to discuss what they saw, go read up about it on the internet etc. When they leave work they are less prone to read the signs, are less prone to go research anything upon arriving home etc. These factors are also evidenced in the pricing of the signs. Those on I-75 Southbound cost more than those on NorthBound.

The billboard will make it's debut when we have reached the amount required to order the sign. There was never a consensus on where exactly the sign should be. I uploaded a .pdf file from Lamar Advertising that showed the various locations/time frames the signs would be available. It was my opinion that option #3 was the best choice for the money/time frame. I didn't get many responses about that. I don't have the bandwidth to host the .pdf again so if someone could provide a hosting solution for the .pdf I'll upload it so everyone can see it.

I'd replace the February 5th line with something else. First of all, it will rally/remind people to vote against him. Our supporters should have MUCH higher turnout, simply because we have much more passion for our candidate as well as political knowledge. Also, it makes this seem like a normal candidacy (which is likely to make the viewer lose interest)...if we can instead favorably give the impression of a movement, they'll be much more likely to look into it (and talk with others) and even join in. In rural Georgia, a tagline like "Help restore the Republic!" would probably work well...but I have my doubts in metro Atlanta. "Let's take back our country" probably plays too much into the rEVOLution theme which the media may sensationalize/exaggerate in the near future (not to mention that the campaign doesn't support/endorse it). Anyone have better ideas?

uncloned21
11-19-2007, 11:33 AM
I would suggest that the sign be located just outside the perimeter. Do you have a chipin link? I'd be glad to help!

MsDoodahs
11-19-2007, 11:44 AM
Outside 285, absolutely.

It has been a while, but I would think somewhere around the Marietta loop would be good.

Put one up on 575 that says "No Big Government, RON PAUL for PRESIDENT"

DO NOT put the damn thing inside the loop. You Republican primary voters are outside the loop, most do not even work in Buckhead, Midtown, let alone Downtown. Get people up north on 75, 575, 85, 985, 316, 92 (E of 400), 140 (W of 400) and 400, all outside the perimeter and north of 20.
Cumberland, Sandysprings, and Dunwoody office workers are the office workers you want to hit; They are inherently more conservative than their more urban brothers to the south. Strike them!
What you should do first is look for the Digital billboards. The election in GA is much closer than the typical contract period for static billboards. Digital fits your needs better, though they are not as widespread.

I would put something more simple. I personally would not take the time to read this message on the interstate.

A very very very large "RON PAUL - PRESIDENT" with no face, message, or anything seems to work great. With that all 250,000 vehicles per day to see the name Ron Paul, not just the 1/3rd willing to read several lines.

ok I have one with For President in there. Hopefully this is going to be the one that we can go with. I'd really like to see what Eric has come up with. The other 2 artists I was going to have help bailed out with personal/work stuff they got swamped with. So I think after we see what eric throws in we can go ahead and vote and hopefully get this up on the billboard asap. We are still shy on cash though but lets see how the vote on the sign goes first.

Bring the Troops Home

Roll Back Big Government

Restore the Constitution

Republican Ron Paul for President 2008

LibertyEagle
11-19-2007, 03:15 PM
I like the text of the first one much better. "Troops, Economy, Borders" doesn't tell me much of anything. I also wonder about leaving off the phone number. We seem to do this on everything. What about all those people who don't have high-speed internet or no internet at all?

Overall, I like the 1st one better, but with a different picture. However, some of the changes along the way in this thread to billboard one, caused it to look way overcrowded.

Hey, I'm down here in Macon. Here's my $.02.

The last version looks a LOT like the real estate salespeople billboards I see frequently on I-75. At least the 'Flag' version looks like a political ad.

I agree with kylejack about the 'Protect our'...troops, economy, borders suggestion also. I like the happy picture, but I like the dark, moody, melancholy one for some reason too.

Don't say less war or less taxes, either. It's more correct to say fewer. Less Government is great, though.

Personally I loved what that guy did at the Philly rally with the Geico tagline. You know the one: "I just saved a bunch of money by switching to RON PAUL." Perfect.

LibertyEagle
11-19-2007, 04:27 PM
With the last line re-done (remove February 5, resize the website text smaller and possibly add the phone number 877-RON-PAUL), consider a different picture and either "for President" removed or the text re-sized. It doesn't look good running up against his head.

This is no question the best one.

Also remember that the website should be highlighted more than the phone number because this will be seen southbound when people are on their way to their office. They most likely have internet access at work and are more likely too look up a url than call the number in that specific circumstance.

The general consensus at the meetup was that we would go with Wayne's general layout but use verbiage bullet-point verbiage more similar to this:

Agreed. How about these?

1. Support the Troops- Bring Them Home
Restore the Free Market, Restore the Constitution

2. Bring Our Troops Home, Restore the Free Market, Restore the Constitution

3. Bring Our Troops Home, Slash Taxes and Spending, Restore the Constitution

I like 3. It will appeal to the many people who are dissatisfied with the war and big government taxes and spending. "Slash Taxes and Spending" and "Restore the Constitution" will perhaps also mollify the conservatives who get their views on the war from talk radio.

Another thing I wanted to suggest to everyone was to think of Reverse Psychology type ad campaigns. Example:

Do NOT visit
ronpaul2008.com

I know if I saw that on a sign in big bold letters the first thing I'd do is go to ronpaul2008.com because my curiosity would be at level 10. Thus far all of our ideas have been typical politician style designs, which everyone and their mother has seen and never pays attention to. I have a feeling that it might not register with as many folks. We might garner more attention if we used some PsyOp ad campaign on them instead. So any ideas you folks could throw in that direction as well would be greatly appreciated.

Points to ponder for our billboard:

1-People will be driving by it at speeds of 60 to 70 MPH.

2-Keep It Super Simple: KISS

3-Make sure a smiling photo of Ron is on it. Make it a bright and happy billboard.

4-www. is no longer needed to bring up a web site...try it.

5-See Nov 21 ad: http://mysite.verizon.net/nathanielyao/USA_Today_Ad.html

6-Recommended bullets: (two word bullets)

* Troop Withdrawal * Secured Borders

* Individual Rights * Sound Economy

* Reduced Taxes * Balanced Budget * Vote Ron Paul Feb 5th

7-Put a web site and a 800 number. Suggestions: RonPaul2008.com 1-800-Ron-Paul

(or DailyPaul.com I like this one better because it is shorter and because of all
the links it has. You can still click on the main Rom Paul site from there).

Yours truly,

A bit wordy but often times if a sign is interesting and I drive by it once and miss out on reading all of it, I will look at it again the next day as I travel into town. The vast majority of people viewing this sign are going to be commuters who pass by daily. I think the reverse psychology of OBVIOUSLY not the right choice will pique their interest........especially after hearing h e is not bankrolled by big business, he wants peace, and has a plan for the 9 trillion dollar debt. Any ideas on how to get those points across using less words?

The first picture on that flicker link is a custom corplast sign, which is a version of the first billboard design, I said I would post a picture of when it was done.

Thanks for the idea!!

Love this one above!!!!! I wonder how much a BB in my area costs? Will have to start exploring that idea. Can other meetups borrow this design in case??

I don't like the "not the right choice" line unless you make "right" a different color or font or in quotes.

Let's face it... plenty of people are stupid. They won't get it.

Hey guys, there is a group looking to put up an ad on a digital billboard in Cedar Rapids, Iowa at a very good location. They need help with some billboard ideas. I think the best for Iowa would be something about secure borders, ending the war, and saving the economy. Need donations as well. Please help out, Iowa needs some work. http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthread.php?t=39933

Ya man, I am TOTALLY digging the OBVIOUSLY NOT THE RIGHT CHOICE one myself haha!!! It forces ppl to stop and think about if what they are reading is right.....which is a good thing. It makes them have to read it again the next day when they drive in to work to see if they did, in fact, read it properly. When they see it the second time they will be like....uhhhh what in the world? Peace, Prosperity, Freedom? Why wouldn't he be the right choice? Then they'll want to go visit his site to see what in the heck he is really all about. Here is another rendition of the other more wordy sign.....which I think will be equally effective. We have to remember that folks will be driving by these not just once, but every day for a month so they will maybe read one line one day, one line the next. After reading he isn't bankrolled by big business....I think lots of folks will be interested.

Although I like the "Obviously not..." billboards message, I agree that it is probably not the right choice to put in front of the general sheep heard traveling down 75 in the am.

What is the absolute last possible date to place the order for this billboard so we will get the full 30-day benefit of it prior to the Feb. 5 primary?

IN ANY CASE, WE MUST FINALIZE THIS ARTWORK AND PLACE THE ORDER ASAP (DID YOU READ THE TIME IS MONEY PIECE FROM RP?)!

We must remind ourselves the readers will be flying past at 70 to 85 mph - it must be KISS (Keep It Super Simple), generic enough to get AIDA (Attention, Interest, Desire & Action) from the sheeple, and specific enough to set RP apart from the phony conservatives. I used the 877-Ron-Paul number since it is more campaign-oriented (the 800 number is primarily a call center for book orders and to take donations - very little issue-oriented information). The caller must first buy the issues before they part with their hard-earned Federal Reserve IOU's!

Here is another proposed message with my crude mspaint software - you professionals may want to dress it up with a better graphics program from the original version if you all like it.

http://www.BuyItAllOnline.com/art/rp13Billboard877.jpg (http://www.RonPaul2008.com)

No matter what we decide, we must decide NOW! I think even the sheeple can agree on these bullet points - what do you think?

How much more $ do we need?

LiberateUS
11-26-2007, 11:00 PM
Could one of you pros do the LiberateUS version with the blue background and your fonts? I tend to agree with the prior post about the blue standing out on billboards, though I am unaware of any research to that effect. Perhaps we could make a little more space around RP's head? I would love to see any of these with the waving flag behind his head.

They're starting to say the ECONOMY is one of the biggest issues. Maybe switch out "reclaim our Constitution" with "save our dollar"?

I played around with that thought and many others before choosing "Reclaim our Constitution," which includes saving our dollar, reinstating the gold standard, making our money worth something, placing Congress accountable for our money supply, rather than private bankers, abolishing the IRS and FRB, etc. There are so many good things RP stands for, but I keep coming back, as he has, to reclaiming our Constitution. Our Constitution is his guiding principle and RP is the only one in the race who truly demonstrates the consistent application of its principles.

I was just googling for billboard display tips and ran across a few as follows:

"...Top 10 Tips for Effective Design:

Successful billboard designs utilize the following tips:

Short Copy
Readable Copy
Strong Branding
Intrigue
Humor
Single-Issue Focus
Vibrant Image
Bold, Appealing Colors
Simple Layout
High Contrast
Bottom line: Less is More. The less you try to say, the more impact you will have on your audience. A clean, concise message can usually be strongly conveyed in 8 or fewer words..."

"...Check out billboard sizes: Typical billboards are 14 by 48 feet, 12 by 24 feet (30-sheet) and 5 by 11 feet (8-sheet). The largest sign is the one you most often notice along the freeway. With this sign you get the maximum exposure. Because of the different placement requirements for smaller signs, as the sign decreases in size, the market exposed to the message becomes smaller and more centralized.

You can have any ad agency design your billboard, but it's more cost-effective to let the billboard company design your advertising.

Remember your billboard is not supposed to go into great detail. The function of billboard advertising is primarily to reinforce advertising messages that you've been putting out using other media. Your audience is on the move, so make your message brief and eye-catching..."

"...Graphic design tips and tricks
White space is good

It may not seem obvious. The temptation to fill up "the empty space" may win out over good graphic design practices. It can be tempting to add extraneous messages in your advertisement, ultimately drawing the reader's attention away from your primary message. The result is a crowded ad design, lessening its visual impact.

There's no doubt that advertising space is expensive regardless of the vehicle used; billboard, newsprint, or magazine advertising. For that matter, many businesses find it hard paying for a professional graphic designer when ad space costs so much. For that reason, a professionally designed ad will help ensure a better return on your advertising investment.

As a frugal business person, it's hard not to fill up that valuable ad space. Resist the temptation. Make the most of your advertising investment by using "white space" wisely. Don't drown out your primary message with "visual noise". Keep it simple and clean..."

---------------------

"...Top 10 Outdoor Billboard Advertising Tips

Visibility – Can the message be easily read? Where will it be displayed? Consider the landscape and lighting. Use colors and images that will contrast with the surroundings. Use ample spacing between words and lines. Keep the message and design simple.

Viewing Time – Outdoor advertising usually requires your message to be communicated in a very short time. An effective message can be communicated in ten seconds or less.

Font Size – Can the message be easily read from a distance? Most billboard outdoor advertising is viewed from passing vehicles and should be in clear, large fonts that can be read from a distance of at least 1,000 feet. Leave spaces between the letters to avoid a crowded appearance.

Short Copy – Less is more! By using fewer words and keeping the message simple, the copy will be retained and more easily understood by the viewer.

Contrasting Colors – Does the billboard stand out from the surroundings? Does the copy stand out from the background? Are you using contrasting colors on all of the elements? Using appealing colors and contrasting elements can make your message stand out.

Intrigue – Does the message or image draw attention? Will a glance at the advertisement demand further investigation? Use provoking words and imagery to draw the readers attention to your advertisement

Single-Message Focus – Pinpoint your message and focus the advertisement on getting it to the reader. Do not try to force multiple messages on one billboard as that may create confusion.

Attractive Ads – Using imagery along with the copy will help to attract the readers eye to the billboard. The use of images also helps to retain the message in the reader’s memory by creating an association between the image and the message. Using extensions to create unusual designs and shapes will make your billboard stand out from others around it. It will help to retain the message in the reader's memory.

Simple Layout – Keep the layout simple. If the layout is cluttered the message may be confusing or simply ignored.

Call to Action – Is the call to action clearly found in the advertisement? Do the readers have all of the necessary information to make them want to respond to the advertisement?..."

For those of us who have never created HUGE billboard graphics, here are some IMPORTANT technical graphic design tips to consider:

http://forums.appleinsider.com/showthread.php?t=67896

According to the above, if we are going to use a RP photo, we will need a REALLY, REALLY, HIGH RES PHOTO - like 12 Megapixels minimum for the billboard. Perhaps it is time to obtain official RP high-res images and turn this project over to the Billboard graphics design professionals with ONE CLEAR, CONCISE MESSAGE. Remember "Got Milk?" or "Eat Mor Chiken?"

We should NOW decide on that SINGLE-PURPOSE MESSAGE. What is a huge hot button for Cobb/Cherokee County? It is mostly conservative and libertarian. How about:

SECURE OUR BORDERS

or

ABOLISH THE IRS
(with the the circle/slash NO IRS symbol)

or

RESTORE OUR CONSTITUTION

or

PEACE PROSPERITY FREEDOM

Perhaps we should just do a poll for each of the slogans presented in this thread and see what tops the list? Is there a way to do a poll on this forum?

The more I contemplate this after reading the tips above and looking back at the proposed designs, the more I like the Peace Prosperity Freedom one. It is simple, bold, unique from other candidates, and easy to read at high speeds. According to the tips above, we may want to leave it to the billboard design pros to tweak the fonts, imagery and colors as needed to contrast with the background at the actual location of the sign. We must also remember to include any required legal language, consider required distance from voting booths, and whether this is affected by the campaign finance reform (censorship) laws. The billboard pros should be able to handle these issues.

We have a great chance to swing this vote, thanks to the hard work from every one of you! Check out the straw poll on the RP site for Cobb County, GA 7/04/2007 Rank 2 with 17.0% of the vote! I really appreciate all your efforts to save our country and preserve our Constitution.

Ok folks, after much planning it is time for action:

I have been researching PACs and I have finally decided just to start my own for this (and maybe future) effort(s).

So fire up those credit cards, and lets get this billboard up ASAP. Over 250,000 people will see this per day. We have 3 different locations we are scouting on the Cobb I-75 parking lot between 575 and 285, but depending on how quickly we can raise the money will depend on which option is available to us.

Time is not on our side to please give now as much as you can. I'd like to have all the money raised before the end of the week. I know that is a tall order but it is possible. Tell all your friends about this.

NOTE: I called the FEC about this one point, and it is a big one. If you have maxed out to the official campaign, you CAN NOT give to this effort. Since this will be a single candidate PAC, your contributions to this + your contributions to the official campaign will be combined and must total equal or less than $2,300. If you give and are above this cap, I will be force to return your money and will put the project in a bad spot. So please sum your donations and know where you stand.

All we need is $5,500. We should easily be able to raise this. Dig Deep folks!

Also, If for some reason this does not go or the billboard companies fall through, I will contact each member and offer to refund their donation, or move it to another expenditure, so in short, give without worry. You money will either go to help Ron Paul or go back to you.
