CAIRO (AP) — Protesters angered over a film that ridiculed Islam's Prophet Muhammad fired gunshots and burned down the U.S. consulate in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi, killing one American diplomat, witnesses and the State Department said. In Egypt, protesters scaled the walls of the U.S. embassy in Cairo and replaced an American flag with an Islamic banner.

It was the first such assaults on U.S. diplomatic facilities in either country, at a time when both Libya and Egypt are struggling to overcome the turmoil following the ouster of their longtime leaders, Moammar Gadhafi and Hosni Mubarak in uprisings last year.

The protests in both countries were sparked by outrage over a film ridiculing Muhammad produced by an American in California and being promoted by an extreme anti-Muslim Egyptian Christian campaigner in the United States. Excerpts from the film dubbed into Arabic were posted on YouTube.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton confirmed that one State Department officer had been killed in the protest at the U.S. consulate in Benghazi. She strongly condemned the attack and said she had called Libyan President Mohammed el-Megarif "to coordinate additional support to protect Americans in Libya."

Clinton expressed concern that the protests might spread to other countries. She said the U.S. is working with "partner countries around the world to protect our personnel, our missions, and American citizens worldwide."
"Some have sought to justify this vicious behavior as a response to inflammatory material posted on the Internet," Clinton said in a statement released by the State Department. "The United States deplores any intentional effort to denigrate the religious beliefs of others. Our commitment to religious tolerance goes back to the very beginning of our nation. But let me be clear: There is never any justification for violent acts of this kind. "

That also means, that once again, the media is telling us what the protests are about, even though, more than likely, a crowd of that size heard about protests at the embassy and showed up, for countless angers against the United States.

BBC: US ambassador 'killed in Libya' (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-19570254)
The US ambassador to Libya has died after being attacked by militiamen storming the US consulate in the eastern city of Benghazi, reports say.

I am shocked and horrified at this and my sincere condolences to our American friends and loved ones.

This incident confirms my concerns that diplomatic missions in "war-on-terror" countries are not being properly secured by being located in properly secured and defended military bases.

This reminds me of the storming of a UN base in Mazar-e-Sharif when 7 UN workers were killed in April 2011 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-south-asia-12944851). The guy responsible at the time for UN security - Gregory B. Starr, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Safety and Security, is an American who used to be employed as the person responsible for the security of US diplomatic bases.

I have further concerns that the US & NATO countries' military these days lack the military knowledge and competence even to able to secure our military bases. Bases can't be properly secured in or near an urban area. You need a security zone of cleared and controlled ground of at least 6 miles, but 10 miles is better, around a military base to keep enemy fire from rockets and mortars out of range.

If you don't control the ground around a base this happens - 3 were killed at Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan yesterday.

Afghanistan Attacks: Insurgents Attack Bagram Air Base (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/11/afghanistan-attacks_n_1874017.html)

KABUL, Afghanistan -- Afghan insurgents bombarded a U.S. base and destroyed a NATO helicopter, killing three Afghan intelligence employees, officials said Tuesday. There were also NATO personnel aboard and wounded, the coalition said without providing further details.

We've been at war in Afghanistan for nearly 11 years now and still the US and NATO military are operating out of insecure bases! Our supply routes in Afghanistan have never been secured and recently a decision by NATO-ISAF (commanded by a US general) was taken to close bases along the main highways in Afghanistan making the roads even more insecure.

The military and security leaders we are depending on to keep our personnel safe during this war on terror are incompetent and our diplomats would be well advised to have no faith in them. If I was a diplomat in a country with security problems I would quit and come home until we get proper military and security people in charge.

So there is a pattern here of incompetence at the very highest levels of leadership in the United States, NATO and the United Nations.

The people in charge are incompetent and this is very serious folks. We need urgent action to get competent people in post. We need a shake up at the highest levels of government on the military and security side especially. This can't be allowed to go on.

"Libya: One Year On," by T.J. Coles

It is utterly important that the details of the 2011 US/Israeli/NATO destruction and continuing occupation of this peaceful country be documented for the historical record. While many examples exist of the old adage, "The victor writes the history," the "victor" no longer has control of the press as it once did. While they can continue to write their revisionisms (deceptions), the alternative media now has truth-to-power in producing permanent records of what has really happened in the imperialist barbarism executed against sovereign nations like Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya.
Humanity is indebted to T.J. Coles and other scholars for their pain-staking, exhaustive research and comprehensive coverage of these wars. The history being written today is not only in words but also in images. We include a few of them below and some are graphic. The war crimes of the US, Israel and NATO in Libya are staggering and thus far have been carried out with impunity. But if this weary old planet survives their economic and environmental crimes, history will judge them, their decision-makers and the corporate cabal that funds their wars ... and without mercy.

Oil Execs Reportedly Discussed Terrorist Fines With Qaddafi
]Thursday, March 24, 2011

In 2009, Libyan dictator Muammar Qaddafi reportedly called a meeting of executives from 15 foreign oil companies doing business in his country to force the companies to pay $1.5 billion in fines Libya was facing related to the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland and other terrorist acts. The news was originally reported by the New York Times, which cited industry executives, American officials and State Department documents. The Times report did not specifically mention any of the 15 companies that participated in the meeting with Qaddafi, but did say that while most of the companies scoffed at the proposition, several, including U.S.-based firms, appeared willing to go along with the plan.
BP (BP) (http://finance.yahoo.com/q/h?s=BP+Headlines), Europe's second-largest oil company, has been trying to boost its presence in Libya and last year, press reports noted the company had been tied to securing the release of one of the terrorists with ties to the Pan Am bombing in order to gain favor in Libya.
The Times articles lists a group of well-known American companies that have been trying to do business in Libya in recent years. Energy names found on the Times list include Halliburton (HAL) (http://finance.yahoo.com/q/h?s=HAL+Headlines), the world's second-largest oil services company, and ConocoPhillips (COP) (http://finance.yahoo.com/q/h?s=COP+Headlines) and Occidental Petroleum (OXY) (http://finance.yahoo.com/q/h?s=OXY+Headlines), the third- and fourth-largest U.S. oil companies, respectively.
Eni SpA (E) (http://finance.yahoo.com/q/h?s=E+Headlines), Italy's largest oil company and the Western oil major with the biggest Libyan footprint, was not mentioned in the Times piece. Libya, an OPEC member, is Africa's third-largest oil producer behind Angola and Nigeria and home to the continent's largest oil reserves. Total SA (TOT), Frances largest oil producer were very active in Libya.

From CNN:

The consulate was one of several American diplomatic missions in the Middle East to face protests Tuesday after the release online of a film mocking Islam and depicting the Muslim prophet Mohammed as a child molester, womanizer and ruthless killer.

But a London think tank with strong ties to Libya speculated Wednesday that Stevens was actually the victim of a targeted al Qaeda revenge attack.

The attack "came to avenge the death of Abu Yaya al-Libi, al Qaeda's second in command killed a few months ago," the think tank Quilliam said Wednesday.

It was "the work of roughly 20 militants, prepared for a military assault," the think tank said, noting that rocket-propelled grenade launchers do not normally appear at peaceful protests, and that there were no other protests against the film elsewhere in Libya.

The planned attack came in two waves, one which prompted U.S. officials to leave the consulate for a secure location, and the second directed at the place of retreat, Quilliam said.

The think tank cited unnamed sources on the ground in Benghazi and abroad.

[Updated at 12:11 p.m. ET] Tuesday's attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, was planned in advance, and the attackers used the protest outside the consulate as a diversion, U.S. sources told CNN Wednesday.

The sources could not say whether the attackers instigated the protest or merely took advantage of it. The sources do not believe Ambassador Chris Stevens was specifically targeted.

Good to see people are taking action

WASHINGTON: The Coptic Christian church condemned the film that has triggered violent protests in Muslim countries on Wednesday, reflecting fears of a backlash after Copts were blamed for promoting the film.

The film enraged protesters in Cairo who stormed the embassy on Tuesday and was also linked to the later attack on the US consulate in the Libyan city of Benghazi that left the ambassador and three other Americans dead.

An Arabic adapted version of the English-language film was reportedly promoted by a group of Coptic Christians in Egypt, where clips were shown on an Egyptian television station at the weekend, setting off protests.

The Holy Synod of the Coptic Orthodox Church met Wednesday and issued a statement condemning the film.

"Its release at this specific time is part of a malicious campaign targeting defamation of religions aiming to divide the people, most notably the Egyptian people," the statement said.

Egypt's Coptic Christians are a minority that complain of discrimination from Muslims and further isolation following the revolution that toppled Hosni Mubarak as part of the Arab Spring.

And now that they are being linked to the film lampooning the Prophet Mohammed, fears of a backlash are growing among the Coptic community in Egypt.

Savages? It's cowardly to call a besieged people savages for acting more times than not in self defense. The entire region suffered regime change at the hands of imperialists in the 1900s, and any attempt to reject the dictators was met with death and destruction.

Savages? It's cowardly to call a besieged people savages for acting more times than not in self defense. The entire region suffered regime change at the hands of imperialists in the 1900s, and any attempt to reject the dictators was met with death and destruction.

Obama response inadequate

Obama has ordered "heightened security" and the story so far is that means 50 more marines are on the way to Libya. That's an inadequate response.

It's not enough to "order heightened security" if by that you mean ordering the same incompetent fools currently in charge of security to continue in post but to try to do a proper job this time despite still having no idea what to do.

The President should -

Sack and replace the Secretary of Defense (Panetta) with someone who will sack incompetent generals and appoint competent ones
Sack and replace the Secretary of State (Clinton) with someone who will sack incompetent security officials and appoint competent ones
Close all vulnerable diplomatic embassies and consulates in countries with a war-on-terror connection, with an armed jihadi terrorist groups threat
Establish new secure embassies and consulates within new or existing military bases
Site new military bases for the embassies / consulates in rural areas where the land for 6 to 10 miles around the embassy can be occupied and controlled
Site about 60 defensive machine-gun posts 1000 metre / 1000 yard intervals around a circumference at a radius of 6 miles from the base,
Surround the machine gun posts with barbed wire and vehicle barriers
Man the 60 machine guns, 3 men per gun, 24/7 with a force of about 540 marines per base,
Vastly increase the size of the Marine Security Guard from the small force now of about 1000 to the many thousands of marines it will take to secure all the new bases

Sorry "ordering heightened security" simply doesn't cut it.

See my topic here in Ron Paul Forums - How NATO-ISAF and the Afghans should defend our supply routes (http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthread.php?256306-How-NATO-ISAF-and-the-Afghans-should-defend-our-supply-routes)

U.S. again bombs mourners
The Obama policy of attacking rescuers and grieving rituals continues this weekend in Pakistan

In February, the Bureau of Investigative Journalism documented that after the U.S. kills people with drones in Pakistan, it then targets for death those who show up at the scene to rescue the survivors and retrieve the bodies, as well as those who gather to mourn the dead at funerals: “the CIA’s drone campaign in Pakistan has killed dozens of civilians who had gone to help rescue victims or were attending funerals.” As The New York Times summarized those findings: “at least 50 civilians had been killed in follow-up strikes after they rushed to help those hit by a drone-fired missile” while “the bureau counted more than 20 other civilians killed in strikes on funerals.”

I would be very surprised if this turned out to be true.

Edit:

The attacks were billed as the spontaneous action of mobs of righteous Muslims offended by an obscure movie about Mohammed that virtually no one had heard of. This interpretation is absolute nonsense. These attacks have all the earmarks of prior coordination, with the film serving only as a cover story.

A lot of the people share a common accent. The lady's accent at 10:24 is incredibly thick. It was probably produced in Israel.

Working version:

Wow, strong bias.

The evidence points to the opposite, it was made by a Coptic Christian - Nakoula Basseley Nakoula. They tried to blame Israelis, hence pitting one of their enemies against the other by conveniently scapegoating Jews.

http://www.nola.com/movies/index.ssf/2012/09/california_coptic_christian_co.html

The search for those behind the provocative, anti-Muslim film implicated in violent protests in Egypt and Libya led Wednesday to a California Coptic Christian convicted of financial crimes who acknowledged his role in managing and providing logistics for the production. Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, 55, told The Associated Press in an interview outside Los Angeles that he helped with logistics for the filming of "Innocence of Muslims," which mocked Muslims and the prophet Muhammad and may have caused inflamed mobs that attacked U.S. missions in Egypt and Libya. He provided the first details about a shadowy production group behind the film.

What We Know About 'Sam Bacile,' The Man Behind The Muhammad Movie

Most Americans knew nothing about Innocence of Muslims. That's the film that has set the Muslim world on fire, causing protests in Egypt and Libya that led to the death of the U.S. ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stevens.

The bottom line is that we know very little about "Sam Bacile," the man who says he produced the film and says Sam Bacile is his name. The Wall Street Journal caught up with Bacile before he went into hiding. (Update at 3:34 p.m. ET. Some of the claims made in the Journal interview have come under question. We've updated this post below to reflect that.)

According to the Journal, Bacile raised "$5 million from 100 Jewish donors" and he produced the film using 60 actors and 45 crew members.

Bacile told the Journal that he made the film to expose "Islam as a hateful religion."

"Islam is a cancer," he told the paper. "The movie is a political movie. It's not a religious movie."

In another interview, Bacile told The Associated Press that he was a real estate developer and an Israeli Jew, but Israeli authorities told the wire service they have no records of him being a citizen.

NPR's library did not turn up any footprint for Bacile. It found no property, phone, licenses or court records. And Bacile had not made news until today.

Bacile repeated what he told the Journal to the AP.

"The U.S. lost a lot of money and a lot of people in wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, but we're fighting with ideas," he said. The AP story also points out that Bacile may have been warned this film would be controversial and perhaps even incite violence.

"You're going to be the next Theo van Gogh," Steve Klein, a consultant on the film, told the AP he told Bacile. Van Gogh, the AP explains, was the Dutch filmmaker who was killed after making a movie perceived as insulting to Islam.

Innocence of Muslims is a feature-length film. In early July, "Sam Bacile" posted a 14-minute trailer of the film on YouTube. (Be warned, many have found the video offensive.) The preview portrays Muhammad as an imbecile and as a false prophet.

For Muslims it's offensive to simply depict the prophet. To insult him is a whole other story.

Bacile told the AP that he was sorry for the death of Ambassador Stevens, but he blamed his death on the security system.

"I feel the security system [at the embassies] is no good," Bacile said. "America should do something to change it."

When clips of the film were shown on an Egyptian TV program, they were described as being the work of Terry Jones, the Florida pastor who has burned Qurans. Jones, The Wall Street Journal reports, was merely promoting the film, saying he would screen the trailer at his church on Sept. 11.

"The film is not intended to insult the Muslim community, but it is intended to reveal truths about Muhammad that are possibly not widely known," Jones said in a statement obtained by The Orlando Sentinel.

Update at 7:27 p.m. ET. Calif. Coptic Christian Confirms Role:

Using the cellphone number they talked to "Sam Bacile," The Associated Press tracked down a man named Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, 55, who lived at the address that aligned with cellphone records.

Nakoula denied that he directed the film but admitted that he was the manager for the production company. He also told the AP that he was a Coptic Christian.

The AP notes that Nakoula has a criminal record: He pleaded no contest in 2010 to federal bank fraud charges and served 21 months in federal prison.

The AP adds:

"Nakoula denied he had posed as Bacile. During a conversation outside his home, he offered his driver's license to show his identity but kept his thumb over his middle name, Basseley. Records checks by the AP subsequently found the name 'Basseley' and other connections to the Bacile persona.

"The AP located Bacile after obtaining his cell phone number from Morris Sadek, a conservative Coptic Christian in the U.S. who had promoted the anti-Muslim film in recent days on his website. Egypt's Christian Coptic population has long decried what they describe as a history of discrimination and occasional violence from the country's Arab majority."

Update at 6:18 p.m. ET. Actress Says This Wasn't What She Signed Up For:

Gawker has an interview with Cindy Lee Garcia, an actress from Bakersfield, Calif., who appears in the film.

She said the film makes her "sick" because she was never told this was the movie she was making. In fact, the lines she delivered were dubbed over to insert the offensive and blasphemous lines.

Gawker reports:

"The script she was given was titled simply Desert Warriors.

" 'It was going to be a film based on how things were 2,000 years ago,' Garcia said. 'It wasn't based on anything to do with religion, it was just on how things were run in Egypt. There wasn't anything about Muhammed or Muslims or anything.'

"In the script and during the shooting, nothing indicated the controversial nature of the final product. Muhammed wasn't even called Muhammed; he was "Master George," Garcia said. The words Muhammed were dubbed over in post-production, as were essentially all other offensive references to Islam and Muhammed."

This is in line with the analysis that On The Media presented earlier. It found the offensive speech in the 14-minute trailer was always dubbed over.

"I can't help but wonder if the actors involved in the project were told what kind of film they were making," OTM producer Sarah Abdurrahman writes.

Also, using the title Desert Warriors, we found a casting call for the film. "Sam Bassiel" is listed as the producer.

The film is described as a "historical Arabian desert adventure film."

Update at 5:19 p.m. ET. 'Bacile' Never Gave His Name:

Sarah Curran of member station WUSF spoke to Pastor Terry Jones in Gainesville, Fla., today.

Jones told her that Bacile, which he said is not his real name, contacted his church so it could screen the film.

Jones said he talked to Bacile today, but doesn't know anything about him.

"In our conversations," Jones said, "he has never given us his name."

On tonight's All Things Considered, NPR's Elizabeth Blair explains that the film received attention because Jones scheduled a screening of the trailer for Sept. 11.

That got picked up by Jones' friend, an Egyptian-born Christian activist in Washington, D.C., named Morris Sadek.

Dion Nissenbaum, a reporter for The Wall Street Journal, told Elizabeth that Sadek promoted the event through his email list, which goes out to many Egyptian journalists.

Update at 2:17 p.m. ET. Bacile Not His Real Name?:

Jeffrey Goldberg at The Atlantic writes that he just got off the phone with Steve Klein, whom the AP describes as an associate of Bacile.

Klein told Goldberg that Bacile is not a real name.

"I don't know that much about him. I met him, I spoke to him for an hour. He's not Israeli, no," Klein told Goldberg. "I can tell you this for sure, the state of Israel is not involved, Terry Jones [the radical Christian Quran-burning pastor] is not involved. His name is a pseudonym. All these Middle Eastern folks I work with have pseudonyms. I doubt he's Jewish. I would suspect this is a disinformation campaign."

Klein, by the way, was profiled by the Southern Poverty Law Center, which describes him as an "extremist" who has led anti-Muslim protests.

"In 1977, he founded Courageous Christians United, which now conducts 'respectful confrontations' outside of abortion clinics, Mormon temples and mosques," the SPLC reports. "Klein also has ties to the Minuteman movement. In 2007, he sued the city of San Clemente for ordering him to stop leafleting cars with pamphlets opposing illegal immigration."

So, we repeat again, with this story it's better to remain highly skeptical.

Update at 1:02 p.m. ET. That $5 Million Figure:

The Hollywood Reporter has some important context about that $5 million figure thrown out by Bacile:

"Though Bacile claims he spent $5 million on the movie — a figure that would put the film on par with the Toronto festival entrant Julianne Moore-starrer What Maisie Knew — the 13 minutes of footage available online look unprofessional. Furthermore, Bacile has virtually no footprint in the Hollywood community. The writer-director-producer has no agent listed on IMDBPro and no credits on any film or TV production."

What's safe to say now is that we should look at those claims with a great deal of skepticism.

h ttp://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2012/09/12/161003427/what-we-know-about-sam-bacile-the-man-behind-the-muhammad-movie

What to believe??? The guy has a criminal background and a few different aliases. All makes for a perfect set up man for hire. Still not sure who was behind this, but I have my suspicions that it's the usual suspects.

The FCC - What We Do (http://www.fcc.gov/what-we-do)

The Federal Communications Commission regulates interstate and international communications by radio, television, wire, satellite and cable in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and U.S. territories. It was established by the Communications Act of 1934 and operates as an independent U.S. government agency overseen by Congress. The commission is committed to being a responsive, efficient and effective agency capable of facing the technological and economic opportunities of the new millennium. In its work, the agency seeks to capitalize on its competencies in:

Promoting competition, innovation, and investment in broadband services and facilities;
Supporting the nation’s economy by ensuring an appropriate competitive framework for the unfolding of the communications revolution;
Encouraging the highest and best use of spectrum domestically and internationally;
Revising media regulations so that new technologies flourish alongside diversity and localism;
Providing leadership in strengthening the defense of the nation’s communications infrastructure.

It should be possible for the European companies who set up the NileSat satellites (there are about 4 satellites, 2 companies) to change the ground control station from which the NileSat satellites take their uplink TV signal feeds. Of course they will need pressure from the European governments before they will do that. So there is a diplomacy job for the US State Department to speak to European governments to get them to apply governing, legal, financial (and if all else fails military) pressure to require the satellite companies such as Astrium and Eutelsat to take control of those satellites out of the hands of the Egyptians and into maybe NATO hands.

So I would appoint a good US diplomat to take on that task to get Europe fighting terror instead of broadcasting it. However, if Europe fails to take action to confiscate control of the NileSat satellites then by all means the US President should hand the matter over to the US military Space Command to take those satellites out by all means necessary.

I have taken some time to draw up this map showing the main players in the NileSat terror broadcasting situation. I hope this explains what is going on.

What makes people think Stevens was being dragged through the streets, instead of being discovered by supportive Libyans who came after the attack was over?

I saw video of him apparently being carried out of a building, and the pictures here don't necessarily show him being dragged. One man was trying to carry him, holding his cell phone in his mouth, and Stevens' head was raised, maybe indicating he was still conscious.

You can see soot around his mouth, which supports the idea that he later succumbed to smoke inhalation.

Where does the idea come from that he died when a mob attacked his escape vehicle?

Then take a look at picture #4 here:

http://www.cnn.com/2012/09/12/world/africa/libya-us-ambassador-killed/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

The third picture here seems to be a closeup of one of the signs visible to the left - "Chris Stevens was a Friend To all Libyans."
