View Full Version : My take....Clint Eastwood at RNC...

Roger Ebert said this of the Clint Eastwood RNC speech..

“Clint, my hero, is coming across as sad and pathetic,” Ebert tweeted during Eastwood’s remarks. “He didn't need to do this to himself. It's unworthy of him.”

I'd have to say that Ebert is a doddering old fool unappreciative of the classics. His performance was grande.

Clint Eastwood sat the Pooka, and all that the spirit entails, in the chair and channeled 'Harvey.' In Jimmy Stewart style. He made two different stabs at the GOP. And was applauded for both. He excoriated the Pooka for staying in Afghanistan so long. He also attributed to Rmoney phrasing that was not his. "I think Mr. Romney asked why are you giving the target date for bringing them home? Why don't you just bring them home tomorrow?" That wasn't a Romney line. That was a Ron Paul line.
...

Clint was playing an Elwood. I thought he did well.

After listening to people say how bad it was for a whole day I expected to watch it tonight (I had it recorded) and to cringe.

I actually thought it was pretty good too. Not sure why everyone was freaking out about it.

many people parrot what the media feeds them, without so much as a single idea of their own

Eastwood made a huge ass of himself and there was nothing brilliant about that trainwreck at all.

The only fitting aspect was an empty seat put up there to match the essentially empty podium.

A throat-slash gesture directed toward the current President??
The seated President supposedly telling Romney to go fuck himself??
The seated President supposedly telling Clint to go fuck himself??

Are you freaking kidding me?

As a night club act, that crappola would be fine, but as a primetime speaker at a national political convention?

ummm...

No.

Absolute dogshit.

...there was nothing brilliant about...

When Ron Paul gives a brilliant speech many average people don't get it, or do not have the patience to listen.
When Clint Eastwood made a huge ass of himself he was able to tell people:

1) We own the country not the politicians
2) Afgan war (started by the Republicans) was a huge mistake.
3) etc, etc.

The brilliant part is that the (rebel) message was delivered.

People will see what they want to see.

I think you (and others) are trying way too hard.

This was just an old icon - who has lost a little off his fastball - fumbling his way through a live performance.

He was twice vulgar and at least once inappropriate.

He may have taken a couple of stabs at the GOP, but he was ultimately falling right in line ---> by supporting it's candidate in this year's election.

Paraphrasing - "Enough with the lawyers. Maybe it's time for a businessman."

That's obviously Mitt the Magic Undie Man.

It was Theatre of the Absurd at it's finest.

Clint Eastwood gave us the most classic speech of our lifetime. It will be remembered for decades if not centuries.

There was a secret endorsement of Ron Paul within that speech.

He certainly wasn't referencing Romney's policies there.
That's why Anne Romney and others in the crowd had a sour face. I didn't see it when I watched live because he rambled so much.

btw retweet this :P

I really wasn't "trying." I wasn't impressed for the first time by what I interpreted what he said. It was after the second time watching that I understood the connection to the pooka.

I think yu need to watch it in entirety again.

Paraphrasing in the context of the speech doesn't work. The speech was a libertarian one. But it was delivered the way it was for purpose.

MR. SMITH goes to Washington. Jimmy Stewart. Harvey. Pooka.

Clint Eastwood does not do disjointed communique. What he did. How he did it. Purpose.

One does not speak at the RNC without having their speech approved. I think RON told us all about that. I thought he worked it brilliantly..

Endorsing Mittens was required to be on stage.

...
"It's time for a businessman."...

Ron Paul ran at least 2 (or more) types of businesses so he also qualifies there. :)

Good boy, Clint.Yes he did what he was told/paid to do. He also went on for 12 minutes unscripted when he was supposed to speak for only 5 minutes.

He also referenced Ron Paul stances while assigning them to Romney. (stances that the majority at the RNC hate with a passion)

The joke was on the Republican Party. His complaints against the Democrats were a very thinly veiled commentary against the Republicans.

He could have gone against the script.
He could have been a hero.

He chose to play along. Fail.

Yes, he was contractually obliged to endorse Romney, but he could have broken the contract and made a real statement. What would they do? Get guards to escort him off stage? Hah, how would that make them look?

He had a chance to be Dirty Harry for real. He threw it away.

And right after that, he said, "A 'quote-unquote STELLAR BUSINESSMAN'," as if he was mocking Romney. LOL

LOL.

He was scheduled with a script for FIVE MINUTES.

He went ad lib without a script for TWELVE MINUTES. That's why the security guards were looking nervous and Ryan had a funny look on his face.

Even Ron, when interviewed, pointed out that Clint Eastwood was dissing both parties. LOL

just sayin'.

oh yeah, and Ron Paul was a businessman most of his life - running a medical practice. i think Clint was making stabs at Romney so subtle that most wouldn't pick up on it.

My. Oh. My.

Yes.

If an old Hollywood liberal had gotten up there and done that routine directed toward a President Paul, this board would be apoplectic for weeks about how it was disrespectful and out of line.

Try to be at least a little bit intellectually honest about it.

Libertarians get to sit here and jerk themselves to the fantasy that Clint Eastwood actually accomplished anything by backhandedly smacking on the status quo.

Republicans laugh because CLINT EFFECTIVELY ENDORSED THEIR MAN.

Lol. I've not been intellectually dishonest about anything. I really don't know what you are on about. Why don't you give it a rest?
