A week before GOP convention, fate of Maine's delegates still unknown

WASHINGTON – The fate of Maine’s delegation to the Republican National Convention remained unclear Tuesday after delegates loyal to Ron Paul continued to clash with national party leaders intent on presenting a unified front for Mitt Romney at next week’s event.

Mark Willis, one of 20 Maine delegates whose seat at the convention is in question, said he and the others rejected a compromise offered Monday night that would have allowed Paul to maintain some delegates while giving others to Romney. Louisiana’s delegation reportedly agreed to a similar deal on Tuesday, days before most convention-goers are expected to arrive in Tampa.

Willis said talks continued Tuesday but that none of Maine’s pro-Paul delegates or alternates were interested in switching their support. Romney has more than enough support to secure the nomination without Maine’s delegates.

I like the stand they are taking. Giving up seats from Maine just lets the other side know that if they don't have a lot of delegates in a state, they can extort some seats through bogus challenges.
