Do we have any whizzes, outside of politics, that contribute here semi-regularly?

What's the type of work you dabble in?

Herpetological studies, communications, marine science, geographer, history geek and a few other talents nobody would care about. Are you trying to asemble a super army of political nerds? I work as an auctioneer/appraiser and specialize in old junk.

XHTML/PHP coder, scientist (w/ research using HPLC/GC), medicine... nothing spectacular or above-average by any means. I just do what I enjoy :)

Edit: since people are getting in depth...

BS in Biological Sciences w/ conc. in reproductive biology, minors in Chemistry, Mathematics, Psychology, and Anthropology (yeah I know, a lot of minors).
Research on the leaching of food and liquid contaminants from plastics (plasticizers, phthalates) using high performance liquid chromatography with variables such as pH and temperature.
EMT, ~100 hours from paramedic cert but don't want it (and won't get the add'tl training for it). Took classes in wilderness medicine, certified in psychological first aid and am a first responder for the Red Cross... multiple national deployments.

I am the very model of a modern Major-General,

I know the kings of England, and I quote the fights historical
From Marathon to Waterloo, in order categorical;
I'm very well acquainted, too, with matters mathematical,
I understand equations, both the simple and quadratical,
About binomial theorem I'm teeming with a lot o' news,
With many cheerful facts about the square of the hypotenuse.
I'm very good at integral and differential calculus;
I know the scientific names of beings animalculous:
In short, in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral,
I am the very model of a modern Major-General.
I know our mythic history, King Arthur's and Sir Caradoc's;
I answer hard acrostics, I've a pretty taste for paradox,
I quote in elegiacs all the crimes of Heliogabalus,
In conics I can floor peculiarities parabolous;
I can tell undoubted Raphaels from Gerard Dows and Zoffanies,
I know the croaking chorus from The Frogs of Aristophanes!
Then I can hum a fugue of which I've heard the music's din afore,
And whistle all the airs from that infernal nonsense Pinafore.
Then I can write a washing bill in Babylonic cuneiform,
And tell you ev'ry detail of Caractacus's uniform:
In short, in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral,
I am the very model of a modern Major-General.
In fact, when I know what is meant by "mamelon" and "ravelin",
When I can tell at sight a Mauser rifle from a Javelin,
When such affairs as sorties and surprises I'm more wary at,
And when I know precisely what is meant by "commissariat",
When I have learnt what progress has been made in modern gunnery,
When I know more of tactics than a novice in a nunnery—
In short, when I've a smattering of elemental strategy—
You'll say a better Major-General has never sat a gee.
For my military knowledge, though I'm plucky and adventury,
Has only been brought down to the beginning of the century;
But still, in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral,
I am the very model of a modern Major-General.

I'm also a bit of a PRO-SE wrench in the gears for banks who can't figure out what the fuck they did with people's mortgage papers. But that's all copy and paste stuff since legal docs are public. It's personal to me to not see the banks paid over and over and over.

I recently hired a lawyer for that, myself. The first thing they did was to tell the court to disregard everything I did - which had kept the plaintiff not answering my interrogatories for 2 years, but I'll reserve judgement. We'll see.

Now that's interesting! What about plastic water bottles? Are they killing us? Destroying our brains? Mimicking hormones?

How much effect does temperature have? I.e. heated in a hot car, frozen in the freezer, thawed, and then consumed? Any reactions with other consumable liquids? Fruit juice? Tea? Alcohol? Soda? All safe?

I used different pH "household" substances to mimic the common things we may store in plastic tupperware. My liquids were milk of magnesia (alkaline), deionized water (~neutral), and lemon juice (acidic).

My research indicated that both alkaline and acidic liquids cause larger leaching, especially in constant warm temperatures. Water held at warmer temperatures also facilitated more leaching than cold temperatures. However, my study was small...

If it answers your question... I stay away from plastics as much as possible (more so after my research) and use glass when I can. :p

Perhaps I shall post my research paper sometime :)

Tupperware is of interest too. And people regularly heat those to melting temperature in the microwave. I expect that is a different plastic than the standard water bottle. Probably best to stay away from them both altogether. People are so addicted to water bottles. Like they can't drink from the faucet anymore (even when filtered).

But they are darn convenient for trips. They fit nicely in an ice chest. And can be refilled with juices or any other drink. I believe the manufacturer disclaimer/legal CYA says that water bottles are single use, not to be refilled ever, with anything. Not comforting. But hey, the government has approved them, so they must be completely safe... ;)

There's quite a bit of economics that is useful beyond austrian school economics. Really, a whole fuckload. lol. And austrians typically agree with the mathematical models.

current life: Unix/Linux/shell scripting expert, can pretty much set up and administer any enterprise application and middleware though I wouldn't claim whizdom on most of them. I've also worked a bunch with Cisco IOS on their switches and routers. After that there's a ton of computer related resume padding that includes vendor certifications from MS and Netware from the 1990s, some CatOS, OS/2, etc. But again, probably not whizzy on any of this stuff anymore.

past life: CNC multi-axis mill programmer. Expert at custom macro programming for Yasnac and Fanuc controllers. I've written custom post-processors for the CAM package that a couple of shops used. I still have my rollaway would like to get back into this as a side gig someday (home shop).

Sweet! I never got very proficient with MIG, but all that other shit I can do well. If you haven't learned oxy/acetylene cutting, you oughta. It's basically the same as OA in getting the cut started. After that, ya just have to learn the trigger mechanism and keeping it steady during teh cut. How many metals can one use OA on? AFAIK, it's only useful on regular steel.

Somewhat mechanic-y, if it's an engine I'm not familiar with, I'll figure it out after a minimum of broken tools and a lot of yelling and calling said engine names normally reserved for the wife after I've drank a bottle of Johnny Walker Black Label. I'm kidding.........I hate Johnny Walker.

Specialize in Honda engines, boost 'em, blow 'em-whatever. Honda Marine and street engines(same thing).

Can drive a boat, never piloted one over 45 feet, but I'm willing to try. You bring the booze and I'll bring the life raft, flares, a little water and more booze while we wait to be rescued from whatever Titanic-esque move I pulled in said boat. I really like shooting flares, to the point you may want to take them from me as I might get wasted on the life raft and start shooting "the fireworks" off when no one is around to see them.

Can MIG, braze, solder.

I can solder small electronics, never had anything I soldered fail yet.

Do we have any whizzes, outside of politics, that contribute here semi-regularly?

What's the type of work you dabble in?

I'm not a scientist, but have engineering degrees from RPI and MIT, as well as an MBA from Boston University. Of course, all engineers get a pretty fair amount of science. My undergrad degree was in Chemical Engineering, and I got more chemistry than I'll ever use. I am employed as an environmental engineer, and almost never use chemistry on more than a rudimentary level.

My wife, who is technically a RPF member, but probably hasn't signed on since late 2007, is a real scientist- a research chemist for a large non-profit research institute. She really knows chemistry, so on those rare occasions when I need to know chemistry, I just ask her- because I use it so infrequently that I can't remember what I learned 25+ years ago :).

Yea it's nothing in your first two years. In my junior year I ended up taking abstract algebra and classical analysis on top of my full electrical engineering course work. I didn't make it... dropped the math minor and just finished up my EE degree. I could have done it if I was extremely dedicated...but it wasn't worth it. Much better having a social life. Was just curious. Could be said that they will be though. Or more broadly accepted to be, I should say, since they actually can and do relate depending upon where in the application(s) one accepts the relevance. In fact we're seeing it happen now as far different applications develop/conform to public perception/practical use itself looking forward.

Thanks for the feedback though. Am always interested in how far along institutions have evolved. I assumed you were practicing relevant to the science(s).

My apologies, I meant that as I'm o-kay as a brazer. Quite often those cutting attachments (pic) need their brass heads re-brazed onto the stainless-steel tubes. I can get those heads to not leak, stay on, and perform.

As welding is quite an art, so is brazing. I might have said it before, but if you're not going to be a good welder/brazer, then you had better be a good grinder.

While I agree it seems most activists are INTJ(P)/ENTJ(P), even as a scientist who loves science with every inch of her being... I've never been a "science-minded" individual (NTJ)... but I'm glad I am different, I suppose. ISFP, which probably explains why I like action-based science (in-your-face, dealing with people, quick problem solving, liking to help) opposed to doing lab and research work.

I'm weak in the math area, but I do have the other's mentioned in the OP question more than covered ...in an un-official sort of way. BTW, I never just said any of that!

I have a BGS from Indiana University. I focused on public & environmental affairs as well as acoustical sciences/musical therapy. I do general research for fun. I am not a specialized geek... just a geek of multiple trades lol.
