Police officers responding to a burglary call in East Austin this afternoon shot a pit bull that attacked one of them, and the dog later died from its injuries, officials said.

Authorities said the service call came in about 1:15 p.m. at a home in the 5000 block of Delores Avenue, near Springdale Road and E. 12th Street. The pit bull attacked an officer as he walked around the house, officials said, and the animal was taken to the shelter for treatment after it was shot.

The dog died from its injuries about an hour ago, police said. The officer had minor injuries and did not receive any treatment, authorities said.

In June, the Austin Police Department announced changes to its policies and training on how officers deal with dogs following the controversial shooting in April of a man’s dog. The new policy clarifies that lethal force is authorized if officers decide there is “imminent danger of bodily harm” to themselves or another human, not when a dog is simply acting aggressively.

Damn. With all the deadly dangers Police officers should just dress in Storm Trooper armour when on duty. Why are we waiting? The technology is there.

Save a dog. Armour a cop. (TM)

Probably injured himself tripping on something or climbing over a fence. I'll bet the dog was in his own yard and inside of a fence.

War on dogs. Austin is a socialist Hell hole.

It has always had a lot of liberals here, but it always was pretty much live and let live. I've always found Austin really unique. People from all walks of life and each just does their own thing and actually get along with each other.

That is until the Californians descended upon us and demanded a bunch of new restrictions and laws.

Maybe people need to get together and send em back to California.

Don't postal workers deal with dogs on a daily basis? How do they manage getting through the day without killing dogs? Are cops more fearful and cowardly than the average Cliff Claven?

Apparently they are.

When I was just a little kid, the dog next door would go crazy every time the postal carrier went by. Later I found out the dog had been attacked by a postal carrier and had his head opened up with a belt buckle attached to the end of a belt. I guess the postal carrier used his belt to keep the dog from attacking.

Years later I noticed most postal carriers have a can of mace on their belt for that purpose.

I can't stress this enough... this is what pepper spray is for. Any LEO who makes the excuse "My pistol was faster and more effective" is full of incorrect information. My pepper was always on the opposite side of my pistol and would scare a grizzly away.
