NOAA Requests Ammunition For The Weather Service

On 9 Aug 2012, the Department of Commerce, for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration by way of the National Weather Service, put out a solicitation for a small variety of ammunition.

The solicitation breaks down the requirements:

16,000 rounds of ammunition for semiautomatic pistols to be factory-loaded .40 S&W caliber, 180-grain jacketed hollow point (JHP).
6,000 rounds of frangible, 125-grain CFRHT .40 caliber.
24,000 rounds of ammunition for semiautomatic pistols to be factory-loaded .40 S&W caliber, 180-grain jacketed hollow point (JHP).

In all, 40,000 rounds of ammunition, and only 500 Transtar II blue 24" x 40" targets are being ordered.

All the ammunition and targets are being spread out over the US to three locations, Ellsworth, ME; New Bedford, MA; Wall, NJ; and St. Petersburg, FL. Only the 24,000 rounds are being sent to Florida, no targets will be shipped there.

This all comes after the Department of Homeland Security requested a contract with manufactures for over 63,000,000 rounds rounds over the next 4 years.


And this raises other questions:

Could not the US Government simply re-allot the ammunition from DHS to DOC?
What is it about being a weather person that requires the training and use of a firearm?
What future event is coming that makes the National Weather Service believes it needs to train and arm its employees?

When natural disasters and food crisis hit... rest asure, NOAA/DARRP/etc etc etc will be there to protect "THEIR" wildlife, food, seas/rivers, and areas with those thousands of rounds. There were plenty of NOAA payroll related personnel that assisted in natural disasters like Katrina, BP Oil Spill, etc. Many received medals/bonuses on top of their paid jobs to do that very job during disasters.

NMFS is a branch of NOAA.

NMFS seizes fishing vessels, among other things.

I watch the weather. Been doing that for years,, No particular formal education or training in that field,, some high school,Science,history etc.
But i have been watching the weather. Sometimes because of my job,,to get stuff out of bad weather,,and to see it coming.
I lived in Key West where Gales and Hurricanes were a reality. And I watch up here for the weather to turn to winter,, to have wood to heat my home.
Storms are often common,, and always on the horizon..
Some times I watch the storm go by,, another near miss.
And I have shouted in the face of a hurricane.

6,000 rounds of S&W JHP will be sent to Wall, New Jersey and another 24,000 rounds of the same bullets will he handed over to the station in St. Petersburg, Florida.

St. Pete. is the only city that not receiving 100 or more paper targets to assist with training of agency issued sidearms.

Two hundred targets are going to Maine and Massachusetts, but only 100 to New Jersey. So, 46,000 rounds and 500 targets.

One commenter pointed out that the NOAA overseas the National Marine Fisheries Service that's responsible for all U.S. marine resources. The aquisition mentions this agency, NMFS and the OLE — Office of law Enforcement
