They are getting serious now , that puts them up to four rounds per person , I think the old number was one round per person.

170 million does not buy as much beef these days as one might expect , but , yes , beef and poultry prices will be rising ...

I'm confused.. It says they bought .357 mag rounds.. No government worker or LE uses .357 rounds..

You said they would be buying livestock, so this would typically mean on-the-hoof prices. This week typically running 1.19 to 1.20 /lb for avg 1250 lb steer (which is already up quite a bit from what it has been in the past), if they are paying market prices. So about 113,330 head, expected to yield ~89,280,000 lbs dressed weight beef, for 170 million. Quite a bit different from finished cost.

The DHS goons could just be terrible shots. :p

As much as I like to think my government wouldn't be buying all of the ammo to use against us, I think about how morally bankrupt they are and I cringe a little.

If you look at the PO that is shown in the vid at the link, the snippet visible also includes .223 Rem., 30-06 Spr, .308 Win, 10mm auto, so blanket PO/bid request.

DoD buys about 1 billion rounds of 5.56 a year, and the civilain market is about 14 billion rounds of all calibers per year, just by way of comparison.

I recall seeing that some agencies carry Glocks in .357SIG.

I don't know if you are trying to minimize the importance of this, but the DHS has bought 1.4 billion rounds in the last year, so I guess they outdid the DOD, which mass murders daily at locales throughout the empire. As far as 300 million Americans buying 14 billion a year, it would not surprise me given all the shooting ranges and hunting that goes on. The DHS has a tiny, tiny fraction of people compared to both.

How do you feel about DHS buying all that ammo? That seems to be what this discussion is about.

that is a lot of beef.
so, we are in a drought- the farmers crops are done- so let's buy up and slaughter all the cattle too.

Not surprised and quite frankly, since I am not what you would consider a conspiracy theorist, I don't put alot of stock in the assumptions made over the purchase of ammunition. Because that is all this is - assumptions based on the purchase of ammunition. How many people is this ammo for? Does anyone even know? How much ammo does the average person who is going to use this ammo go through in a training session? Questions that need to be answered before we jump to wild conclusions.

I don't deny that our government is up to some shenanigans most of the time but I'm not buying all this "the world is coming to an end" pied piper bs. I don't believe that our government (as horrible as it is) will use deadly force en masse to control the population because we the people have more guns than they do.

My thought on this is that if all of this beef hits the market, then the price of meat will drop like a rock and this is the government's way of keeping the prices up. Kinda sucks. I was looking forward to buying hamburger on the cheap this fall. :-(

I was in Colorado Springs not too long ago and was talking to a local cop (maybe it was an El Paso sheriff deputy, but pretty sure he was local PD) and he had a .357 Mag revolver. He said it's what he was used to decades ago before becoming an officer, and as long as he can qualify with it on the range, they'd let him use it. But yea, it is definitely a rarity nowadays.

But as libertyjam points out, the PO indicates a variety of ammo, so that makes more sense.

i read somewhere they are sending all the food to be frozen at food banks.
causing a shortage up front with increased demand from the "stimulus".

so, we are in a drought- the farmers crops are done- so let's buy up and slaughter all the cattle too. It is a done deal , but they would have culled themselves what was needed due to , hay , feed, water etc. , no govt intervention needed .

What constitutes "en masse" to you?

One neighborhood, a city block, a town?

Rounding up the country folk would be a hard row to hoe but city dwellers have cause to worry in my opinion.

If food does become scarce (like after a drought) life in the big-city might not be so wonderful.

Yes it definitely can cause perturbations in the economic market.

Food prices are going to rise because farmers have sent livestock to slaughter early. Its 6 months to 24 months that you should be concerned if you like beef. The breeding stock has been desimated. Get used to fish and chicken!!

And buying up meat is counter-intuitive to what they should be doing. If they really want to help the farmers figure out a way to secure feed for the animals so they can be bred or sold later.
