As long as Piratebay remains open, there is hope.

I thought their server was located in Montenegro?
Some forums are reporting the DDOS attack, but not the law enforcement connection.

The guys who run these sites are pretty bad-a$$. Just saying. They take the risk of going to jail so that we can... get stuff for free.

Yeah I was reading somewhere that the Demonoid administrators were working to restore the site and its servers but it would take some time. I'm worried that Pirate Bay is all that's left considering they've had legal issues in the past.

I am not sure why sharing even requires servers. Is it just so the uploaders and downloaders can hook up?

I've tried Usenet, but can't figure out how to do that.

(I know how to post in usenet, just can't figure it out as it relates to file sharing. :) )

Yup the servers host the .torrent files witch contain the info that your bit torrent program uses to connect connect with other users.

sharing doesn't require servers.
demonoid is nothing more that a forum like this one, except it has a way for users to share links to their torrents that are located on their computer.
demonoid in itself isn't hosting any software. they are a community forum.

Demonoid is a torrent tracker. The servers are for hosting the .torrent files, like torchbearer said.

Apparently they did they right before the PM of the Ukraine is on his way to meet President Obama, so it's a little political gift.

mod should change thread title to "Demonoid busted as gift to Obama/Biden 2012"

the original article says gift to US govt but gift to Obama Biden 2012 is more appropriate

Actually this was a gift to the US entertainment industry...who will see Obama as a returner of favors. This is a perfect example of the US dictating to foreign nations what their laws should be...I can't wait for the world policeman to go broke, may be then this sort of meddling will end.

true, for current TV and recent movies. but Demonoid had many unique items, from TV movies to software. just as when megaupload was taken down it did not effect the popular items but the harder to find classic TV and Korean TV

I don't see how Hollywood benefits, other than to prove a point. most TV is downloaded by people who can't watch it in their own country. or find it an easier way to record something they already have watched.
Canadian and British networks don't seem to mind when their current shows are posted, rather openly on youtube. and yet Warner goes nuts if a 60 year old movie or TV series shows up there

Most of the FTP sites that we had available were pretty much just for web hosts to uploads their files to servers, but we never really played that big of a part in trying to encourage FTP to download files. HTTP got pushed because IE was the dominant browser at the time and had terrible FTP support.

Actually, should've hid behind TOR (https://www.torproject.org/).

Actually, should've hid behind TOR (https://www.torproject.org/).

TOR only works on the theory that no one would bother going through the trouble of tracing you. It is possible to trace someone through the TOR network just takes a while. I think if they were willing to go as far as DDOS'ing demonoid then taking it down physically I think they would have no issues wasting the time to find through TOR.

anyone know if anyone host ftp server sites anymore? i used to run a u-serv server.I hosted a FTP server back in the late 90's when I first got a cable modem as a teenager. I also ran a Hotline (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hotline_Communications) server too. Before that I even messed around with hosting a BBS, but I didn't want to use my spare phone line exclusively for that purpose.

AFAIK while its true that TOR is not perfect, it is rather hard to find someone unless they are caught by someone in control of the exit node. TORs exit nodes are randomized by design so in order to have 100% efficiency at tracking TOR traffic, the people looking would have to control 100% of the exit nodes.

Using TOR in conjunction with another proxy site (ex CGI proxy) in a ghetto proxy chain type situation would help further mitigate the traceability as I understand it.

Im honestly shocked that more people dont upload their own personal legally obtained media on a private FTP account with no password or http (say, apache) for your own backup and personal use...

ahem.

Seems that they're back and they've done exactly that:
http://www.afterdawn.com/news/article.cfm/2012/11/12/welcome_back_demonoid#comment-5802352

The site's index and forum remain down, however, as the team works to bring the entire site back online.

Over the summer, Demonoid was hit by a massive DDoS attack, taking it down temporarily. Afterwards, following pressure from Interpol, the site's webhost in the Ukraine pulled the plug, leaving Demonoid and its users in the dark.

The new site appears to be running from Hong Kong.

I am a member at (old)Demonoid.

How do you access a new one?

Also:

It is nearly impossible to find someone who has free invites to this one:

There's not a new site yet so I don't think you can access it. Just the tracker is supposedly back up so if you downloaded the torrents themselves and saved them you can use them again. Too bad I didn't do so for all the stuff I had planned to download at the time.

From reading, it looks like their pages aren't up again, but the torrents are.

After three and a half months of downtime Demonoid’s tracker is now back online. The unexpected revival of the tracker is the first sign of life in weeks and suggests that the Demonoid team is working to bring the full site back online. While the index and forum remain offline, the many thousands of torrents tracked by Demonoid have been brought back to life.
