No wonder they are hopelessly broke. Going for such a tiny demographic isn't business savvy. Then again this is the same organization that was suffering significant losses on the sale of soda pop and hotdogs.

Amtrak calls the diversity program a priority.

“We understand that valuing diversity is not only a good thing to do, but a business necessity beyond compliance that plays a vital role in customer service delivery and ultimately the success of our operations,” the website states. “Simply put, our business diversity philosophy means commitment to ensuring our company embraces a culture of respect and appreciation for differences and similarities of all people.”

Utter nonsense. If you provide quality service, homosexuals, pygmies and martians will purchase tickets. They need to stop singling out people.

At least they don't need to worry about anybody boycotting them.

They are consumed with diversity nonsense while their company periodically begs Congress for a bailout every 6 months. I have a novel idea. Close wasteful routes, innovate and rethink your marketing strategies instead of wasting advertising on Lonny and Donny.

desparate for business when competing with air travel, road tripping, and people too broke to travel, yeah, you'd try to advertise to any group you can get

They do tend to travel a lot and spend a lot of money on travel apparently.
http://www.travelweekly.com/Travel-News/Travel-Agent-Issues/With-a-big-spending-reputation-LGBT-travelers-attract-suppliers/

A once neglected, all but invisible and even persecuted market segment, LGBT leisure travelers now find themselves increasingly courted and cajoled by mainstream travel suppliers, destinations and, in some cases, travel agencies, as well as by a growing raft of travel firms and hotels owned and operated by gays and lesbians.

What's the appeal? First, by one estimate, the LGBT demographic spends some $65 billion a year on vacations.

Moreover, industry players note that LGBT consumers have gained a reputation, deserved or not, over the past two decades as "Teflon travelers," less prone to cancel in the wake of geopolitical or natural disasters and more willing to part with a bigger portion of their disposable income on vacations than the general population is.

The food losses are due to the cost of unions. They once tried contracting it out to Subway, but the unions had a fit.

It's not just Amtrak that receives a subsidy, highways and airports do too. It was government interference in the 50's and 60's that made passenger trains unprofitable and almost killed the freight trains too.

Get rid of unions and the subsidys of other modes of transportation, then privatize Amtrak.

Such an excellent form of transportation, yet its not allowed to flourish thanks to the monopoly. Sad.

So what?
How is it any different than Cities targeting adds to a particular demographic.
or Cruse lines,, or any business for that matter.

this issue is NOT an issue.
