Swiss soccer player banned from Olympics for racist tweet

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/olympics/london/soccer/story/2012-07-30/swiss-athlete-banned-michel-morganella-olympics/56591966/1

LONDON - Twitter is proving lethal for some Olympic athletes.

Less than a week into the 2012 London Olympics and already two athletes have been expelled for racially charged messages. Monday, the Swiss Olympic Committee bounced soccer player Michel Morganella, 23, after his offensive comment following Switzerland's 2-1 loss to South Korea a day earlier.

Translated from French, Morganella's tweet said he wanted to beat up South Koreans, that they should "burn" and that they were a "bunch of mongoloids."

Last week, Greek triple jumper Voula Papachristou, a right-wing political supporter, was expelled by Greek athletic officials after she mocked African immigrants.

Offensive remarks are in breach of the International Olympic Committee's code of ethics.

In Morganella's case, he "discriminated against, insulted and violated the dignit" (sic) of the South Korean team, as well as the nation's citizens, Swiss committee chief Gian Gilli said Monday in a statement at a news conference.

Gilli said Morganella willingly accepted the punishment. His Twitter account has already been deleted.

"Michel indeed does realize that his behavior was wrong," Gilli added. "We hope that he will draw the necessary lessons for his still-young football career.''

(Yeah, keep your mouth shut in these weird politically correct times with everybody walking around with a stick up their asses about everything, and don't put anything out on Twatter or FedBook under your real name. - AF)

Morganella attempted to apologize on Twitter in French and English, trying to explain that he made his comments in the heat of defeat.

Luis Milla, Spain's soccer coach, said athletes are entitled to their opinions, but "people in the sports world when they tweet, they have to be respectful.''

Two American divers, David Boudia and Nick McCrory, said they are mindful of the potential dangers.

"Everyone sees it — it's not like you can say something and delete it right away,'' Boudia said. "It's going to be found. You just have to be careful of what you want to say and how your message is going to come across. Ten years down the road, they're going to look back at that."

Said McCrory: "If you wouldn't say it in an interview, you probably shouldn't tweet it. That's my rule of my thumb. Social media guidelines are the same as social guidelines. There are things you do and don't say."

Fans are becoming exceedingly wary, too. Sam Quinton, 21, of Woodford, England, said he recently deleted his Twitter account. But he said, "Twitter is something (many athletes) use every day. Suddenly, when they're being looked at by so many people, their opinions get scrutinized even more.''

Mongoloid[1] is a term sometimes used by forensic anthropologists and physical anthropologists to refer to populations that share certain phenotypic traits such as epicanthic fold and shovel-shaped incisors and other physical traits common in East Asia, Southeast Asia, North Asia, Central Asia, the Americas and the Arctic. The word is formed by the base word "Mongol" and the suffix "-oid" which means "resembling". It was introduced by early Racial science primarily to describe various central and east Asian populations, one of the proposed three major races of human kind. Forensic anthropologists continue to use them in some contexts, outside of physical anthropology the term mongoloid is now often considered derogatory'

The context is racist just like the context of certain "La Raza" leaders saying they look forward to seeing white people die off is racist. That said, I'm not from Switzerland so I don't give a flip about some Swiss athlete who hasn't figured out yet that he shouldn't tweet every stupid thought that goes through his brain.

I have not. It seems worth the check though. Sounds full of lols.

Plot

In Ostend three handicapped musicians are looking for a drummer for their band, consisting entirely of disabled people. They want to perform only one time at a music competition. They want famous writer Dries to be their drummer and his handicap is the fact that he cannot play the drums. They only plan on mastering one song; Devo's "Mongoloid."
For Dries this is an opportunity to get some inspiration for a new novel and he accepts the offer. The band members decide to call the band The Feminists, because four handicapped musicians are just as worthless as a group of feminists. In the contest they have to compete against the band Harry Mulisch, also led by a writer with the nickname Dikke Lul (fat cock in English).
As the story goes on Dries becomes more and more obsessed by his new novel and he tries to manipulate the band members and tries to find their weak spot.

You're making this out to be so benign. He didn't just "harbor animosity" or "talk shit" - both of which would be ok. He said that another group of human beings should be burned. That's not competition - that's outright hate and wishing harm to a group of people.

Why do I feel there is a double standard among groups on this forum? Put it this way: Say that Kobe Bryant had said "Iranians are a bunch of terrorists... I hope they burn".

Do you really think we'd have a 47 post thread where 90% of the comments supported Kobe Bryant? I sure as hell don't. We'd have a 100 post thread talking about what an evil monster Kobe was.

I read an article many years back that said there were 26 (or 29...I forget) distinct racial groups. One reason the term "caucasian" may have been used was because of the caucasus mtns, from which the term was taken. Since "mongolian" was already descriptive of a national entity, the "oid" ending common in science was probably used. Not saying the racist undertones were not present; just giving a possible explanation.

Yeah, that's why I asked. I've heard all manner of divisions put forth, and really most of them are perfectly valid classification methods that eventually present the same difficulties (how to categorize members with characteristics of multiple groups). Racial classifications really only get their reinforcement from culture, not science. Everyone is convinced Halle Berry, Tiger Woods, and Obama all belong in the "black" category, etc..
