DECATUR, AL (WAFF) - Many people have shared their outrage over a dog being shot during a drug raid at a Decatur apartment complex.

The owner alleged Morgan County deputies shot Aubie, a 3-year-old Golden Retriever, when they raided an apartment at Cedar Key Apartments on July 20th.

Since then, word about the shooting spread on Facebook and through email.

Sheriff Ana Franklin posted this response on her Facebook page:

"By now you have seen the pictures and read the posts about the dog being shot while the Morgan Co. Drug Task Force was conducting a search warrant for illegal sales/possession of narcotics and marijuana. There is no one that loves animals more than I do. This is a sad and unfortunate incident that I wish could have been avoided. The case is still open and I cant comment on the details, but I can say that the information that has been posted is false and we will seek legal actions about this. These images and posts were sent to inflame the public.

The issue at hand should be that the owner of this dog was selling drugs in an apartment complex, where families and children live close by. Our first priority is the safety and security of our deputies, as well as the suspects. When there is a threat and an act of aggression to our officers, we will use the means necessary to stop that threat. I am angered that drug dealers would put their dogs in that position, and I am also angered that they forced us to take these actions. We will continue to do our job in an effort to make Morgan County a better place."

WAFF 48 News reached out to the creator of the "Justice for Aubie" Facebook page, which contains graphic images of the dog after he was shot. It's unclear who started the Facebook page. We have not received a response.

Maybe the sheriff is right when she got pissed off and treated us like unruly slaves because of the issue of "drugs." Maybe our anger shouldn't be directed at the cops/sheriff, but to the general public who believes people, pets, and anyone who is arbitrarily deemed a threat needs to die in the name of prohibition? Actually, I think I was wrong on my earlier assumption that the dog was originally shot behind the bed. This assumption was based on the amount of spatter. I think Aubie was originally shot on the bed. I think the original shot was fired from the 'stage left.' The spatter above the bed would indicate this. After the original shot I believe Aubie retreated behind the bed were the second man at the door advanced and provided the kill.

I used to have a neighbor who had two large goldens chained in his front yard daily. They would bark pretty aggressively at the end of their chains when anybody would walk past. One day as I was down the street walking toward that house, they came out to bark as usual, but no chain... I was a couple of houses away still, and they are charging down the sidewalk at me. Knew running wouldn't work, and was wearing shorts and flip-flops (not good for kicking). So as they are running at me, I started loudly yelling at them "Come here! Get over here! What are you doing out of your yard!" When the first one gets to me, I put out one hand (fist only, no dangling fingers), and tell him to sit. He is obviously a little confused, kind of sniffs, mouths (lightly chews) my hand, and then let me pet him. They followed me to their house where I told them go sit on their lawn and stay there. Never saw the owner.

I have no reason to expect cops to break into my house but because of all the mistakesthat have happened and the "you just never know" factor I worry about them being stepped on or abused for reacting. I have 2 crates standing on end with the doors open for emergency crating. so sad that you have to worry about things like this now.
