SEATTLE—Two Seattle men say they spent more than two hours in a detention center at the Canadian border after U.S. border agents discovered illegal chocolate eggs in their car.

Brandon Loo and Christopher Sweeney told KOMO-TV ( http://is.gd/usuy85) they decided to bring home some treats for friends and family during a recent trip to Vancouver, British Columbia. They bought Kinder Eggs—chocolate eggs with a toy inside.

The two men say border guards searched their car and said the eggs are illegal in the United States because young children could choke on the small plastic toys. Importing them can lead to a potentially hefty fine.

Sweeney says the bust was a waste of his time and the agents' time. The men eventually got off with a warning.

A U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman declined to comment about the case Tuesday night.

The agency warned on its website around Easter that the treats can't be imported legally.

The agency says it seized more than 60,000 Kinder Eggs from travelers' baggage and international mail shipments in fiscal 2011.

Think of the children that could be harmed by these devil instruments!

When I saw the headline, I *knew* it was going to be Kindereggs! Those things are awesome, and the toys are good too - not like the stupid stuff Cracker Jack has devolved to.

Apparently the children in the rest of the world can somehow manage not to choke on the toys. Americans are pathetic.

I was going to post something. But this is just beyond stupid. I am speechless. Yay nanny-police state.

I'd comment about candy. However, the ONLY thing I am assured of is that the Fed is just comprised of imbeciles and it would be a shame to give them a leg up.

Agreed. I love those eggs. The prizes are too fun.

More ammunition to shoot at the fools that say, "I've got nothing to hide, I'm not doing anything wrong, I've never committed a felony."

I haven't got time to look it up, but I'm pretty sure "illegal importation" under this regulation is a felony.

To be on the safe side, people with kids shouldn't have anything in their house smaller than a bowling ball.

God bless the border patrol! Think of the children who dont chew their food before they swallow. My kids always swallow golf ball sized chocolates whole. These killers should have been tossed in the clinker for at least 5 years.

I wonder if you could buy some, eat all the chocolate and just bring home the toys? I need to go on a long trip, I'm craving Kinder eggs now.

Are Crackerjacks still legal?
Come to think of it, around the late 70's or 80's I kind of recall them transitioning from a "prize" to just some crappy paper item like a sticker.

Yep, there isn't any prize in Cracker Jack anymore. Some idiot must have sued them and now kids can't have the fun we had when I was young.

This thread is the perfect illustration of what we are all about.

Wish I could give more than one rep to the OP.
