Spoken like a true authoritarian.

But, this is, after all, Massachusetts, where everything is illegal.

So, enjoy your state approved freedom, but not too much.

ETA-Oh, and keep in mind, that the fire that started all this had nothing to do with bonfires on the beach.

Scituate bans beach bonfires at July 3 celebration

SCITUATE — The windswept fire that destroyed four Humarock homes in March has prompted Scituate officials to ban bonfires at this year’s July 3 beachfront celebrations.

“I know a lot of people are upset about it, but public safety has to trump some people’s good time,” Scituate Fire Chief Richard Judge said.

Judge, Scituate Police Chief Brian Stewart and the selectmen agreed on the ban Tuesday night, prohibiting bonfires on Scituate beaches during the popular July 3 festivities. Scituate’s beaches, especially Humarock, attract thousands of Fourth of July revelers every year.

Last year, public safety officials tried to limit the number of bonfires by requiring people to apply for a $100 beach bonfire permit. About 50 people obtained the permits, Judge said.

Judge said this year’s ban was a logical decision following the March 8 fire that engulfed four beachfront homes in Humarock. No one was injured in the fire, but two of the homes were burnt to the ground and the other two were left uninhabitable.

The fire was exacerbated by strong winds. If not for a quick response from Scituate and Marshfield firefighters, Judge said the fire could have moved north to Fourth Cliff, destroying all the beachfront property in its path.

The July 3 crowds in Scituate have grown in recent years and with many people drinking alcohol, Judge said the celebrations became to dangerous.

“We don’t enough bodies down there to make it safe,” Judge said.

State troopers from the fire marshal’s office and Scituate police will patrol the beaches July 3 to enforce the ban. Bonfire materials will be confiscated and violators could be fined or face criminal charge.

Judge also said fireworks will be seized.

“Every firework you see down there is illegal,” Judge said.

Last July 3 in Scituate, state troopers confiscated approximately 350 pounds of consumer-brand fireworks in Scituate, valued at about $7,000, police reported. Chief Stewart said there were no injuries linked to bonfires or firework explosions.
