An addiction expert said she wouldn't rule out marijuana causing the agitation.

"It could have been the strain of marijuana that increases the dopamine in the brain, such as sativa," said Dr. Patricia Junquera, assistant professor at the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

There are two strains of marijuana called sativa and indica. The sativa increases dopamine and gives you energy while decreasing pain threshold. Indica is a "sleepy high," she explained.

"People don't really know what the amount of either is in each little packet of marijuana," she explained. "And we can't differentiate between the two in the blood, much less in a dead person."

She also suggested that if Eugene had a mental disorder, "the marijuana could have increased even further the dopamine levels and aggravated the situation. So that can't be ruled out."

It's not clear what led to the May 26 attack on Ronald Poppo, a 65-year-old homeless man who remains hospitalized. Eugene's friends and family have said he was religious, not violent and that he didn't drink or do drugs harder than marijuana.

Notice that the story says
An expert on toxicology testing said that marijuana alone wasn't likely to cause behavior as strange as Eugene's.

Now, notice: the person who said maybe marijuana could cause this kind of behavior is an "addiction expert" -- in other words, someone whose livelihood benefits from people seeking treatment for addiction. So this person has a vested interest in creating fear regarding marijuana and everything else.

I think the only people who will actually buy the idea that marijuana could cause this kind of psychotic behavior are people who are ignorant, and anti-marijuana to begin with, the kind of people who do not listen to reason, and most of whom will be dead within the next 20 to 30 years or so.

I'm not too concerned about it. The majority of Americans will see this implication for what it is: A load of bullshit.

While I am in agreement regarding the addiction specialist I don't believe this is a non-issue. Because of this piece the marijuana face eating meme 'may' spread. We shall see.

This is not even close to being correct.

What a bunch of BS, they really are trying these days. Funny how 71% of Americans have smoked, yet many will believe this to be the cause of the zombie incident.

I wonder how many card-carrying medical marijuana patients have turned into face eating zombies? Seems that states where cannabis is a legal medication should be a good pilot program for research, rather than opinion.

And.........Here's proof.....It's gotta be true CNN printed it.

Tests in cannibalism case: Zombie-like attacker used pot, not 'bath salts'

CNN) -- The naked Florida man who chewed off the face of another man last month in a zombie-like cannibal attack used marijuana but not "bath salts" as police had suspected, authorities said Wednesday.
Rudy Eugene, 31, was killed by a police officer after Eugene's 18-minute attack on a homeless man. His body didn't show "any other street drugs, alcohol or prescription drugs, or any adulterants found in street drugs," according to the Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner Department.
"The department has also sought the assistance of an outside forensic toxicology reference laboratory, which has confirmed the absence of 'bath salts,' synthetic marijuana and LSD," the statement said.
A video of last month's incident shows Eugene coming across 65-year-old Ronald Poppo on a sidewalk along Miami's MacArthur Causeway, stripping clothes off him and eventually chewing on his face. Police said Poppo lost 75% of his face in the attack.

Armando Aguilar, president of the Fraternal Order of Police, told CNN affiliate WPLG last month that he suspected Eugene was under the influence of "bath salts," a drug that contains synthetic stimulants that can "cause chest pains, increased blood pressure, increased heart rate, agitation, hallucinations, extreme paranoia and delusions," according to the National Institute of Drug Abuse.
Eugene's mother said last month that her son was "a nice kid" who could have been subdued with a Taser rather than gunfire.
"He was a good kid. He gave me a nice card on Mother's Day. Everyone says he was a zombie. He was no zombie. That was my son," the mother, who asked that her name not be revealed, told CNN affiliate WFOR.

Toxicology report never mentioned Xanax, and I doubt he would have done what he did on Xanax.

Here's the thing I find absent from the news stories: The metabolites from marijuana are present in your body anywhere from 10 to 30 days after your last consumption. I think on average you're going to test positive for at least 3 weeks afterward. So the mere fact that they found weed in his system does NOT mean he was even high during the incident!! It's the same issue with DUI legislation that seeks to put minimum thresholds into place for THC blood concentration to define driving under the influence... They do NOT prove impairment. The stuff lingers in your system for weeks after you're finished being stoned.

This is extremely misleading for them to publicize toxicology results without mentioning this. Yet more evidence that this is nothing more than drug war propaganda. (As if we needed more evidence of that.)

I wish people who don't know anything about cannabis would just quit talking about it. This expert sounds like a freshman in high school who just read the Wikipedia article for cannabis sativa.

True, true. But then again, I doubted he would have done what he did smoking marijuana. Some people are just f'ing crazy.

Of course it's misleading, that's why they do it.

Although, judging from this "expert", I doubt they are being intentionally misleading, they're just that stupid.
