This is voluntary at this point but I bet it gets mandatory very soon. I wonder where all these fees end up?

UPS ships millions of packages each day. We know that our customers are as concerned as we are about the impact shipping has on the environment. That's why, in addition to other sustainability efforts, we offer a carbon neutral shipping option. Your business can reduce its carbon dioxide (CO2) impact while demonstrating your commitment to sustainability.

UPS purchases certified carbon (CO2) offsets to give you a way to balance out the emissions produced by the transportation of your shipments. UPS has supported projects that include reforestation, landfill gas destruction, wastewater treatment, and methane destruction.

Using our carbon neutral shipping option lets you demonstrate your commitment to reducing climate impact, and enables you and your package recipients to share in that commitment.

When you select our carbon neutral option at the time of shipping, UPS will match the number of offsets purchased through 2011 up to a total of $1 million. Because we have customers around the globe, our goal is to contribute to quality projects worldwide.

Then look at this...

Whatever your industry, compliance with the latest regulations and standards is mandatory

Our carbon neutral shipping is verified by Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS), an inspection, testing, and verification company. This means that you can have confidence in UPS carbon neutral to mitigate the climate impact of your shipment. SGS's verification programs respect worldwide standards.

As long as I don't have to pay extra for non-carbon neutral shipping then I don't have a problem and will keep using them.

Société Générale de Surveillance - I LOL'd when I read that. If they wanted a corrupt global organization to "certify" their program, they went to the right place. Seriously, Google them.

Carbon offsets are the most rediculous idea to me. I am going to go ahead and create pollution say in Chicago by driving a truck around or running a factory and somehow paying for a tree getting planted in South America or someplace will "offset" that carbon and make it go away. A tree can capture carbon but how is that tree in Brazil going to capture the carbon (and other outputs) I created in Chicago? And once the tree dies and decays, the carbon it collected is released again anyways.

Or my new factory I am building may be offset by a factory in some other place (possibly even in another country) may be "offset" by this other company producing less excessive polution than they might otherwise have produced. The total being put out is still increasing. It has not been reduced or offset.

If you want to directly reduce what YOU are producing, great go for it- but to say you will keep doing what you are (or even more) and say you are making things better is lying.

I guess it lets you feel good about doing something bad- and show you care.

I suppose if you are sequestering, then it can't...

The greens are getting demolished by the economic depression that is progressing. In Rio -20 they got their arses handed to them. Eco scaring for government handouts is making little progress due to the sheer bankruptcy of governments worldwide.

They will eventually take their cue from the war on terror and start creating events from which to force what they want. Without real terror, they get blown off as quacks.

Enviromentalisim is one of the leading fronts for the advancement of socialism.

This is a phony fee based on phony science.

Why not just make a little note on their site: "If you want to give us extra money and think it does something, we'll gladly accept."
