View Full Version : Ron Paul endorses Randy Weber's congressional bid
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Retiring U.S. Rep. Ron Paul (http://www.chron.com/?controllerName=search&action=search&channel=news&search=1&inlineLink=1&query=%22Ron+Paul%22) has endorsed state lawmaker Randy Weber (http://www.chron.com/?controllerName=search&action=search&channel=news&search=1&inlineLink=1&query=%22Randy+Weber%22)'s bid to replace him in Congress.
The pair spent time together at the Texas Republican Convention (http://www.chron.com/?controllerName=search&action=search&channel=news&search=1&inlineLink=1&query=%22Texas+Republican+Convention%22) earlier this month, and Weber's campaign on Monday quoted Paul as saying, "I am pleased to endorse Randy Weber."
Paul chose not to seek re-election to focus on his presidential run, but has since suspended his campaign.
Paul has represented the district including his hometown of Lake Jackson for 24 years.
Weber faces a runoff July 31 with Pearland City Councilwoman Felicia Harris (http://www.chron.com/?controllerName=search&action=search&channel=news&search=1&inlineLink=1&query=%22Felicia+Harris%22). That's because none of the crowded field of Republicans vying for their party's nomination for Paul's seat won a majority of the votes in last month's primary.
The winner faces Democratic former U.S. Rep. Nick Lampson (http://www.chron.com/?controllerName=search&action=search&channel=news&search=1&inlineLink=1&query=%22Nick+Lampson%22) in November's general election. http://www.chron.com/news/article/Ron-Paul-endorses-Randy-Weber-s-congressional-bid-3641936.php

If I wuz a Republican eyeing office, my takeaway from this would be: "That's because none of the crowded field of Republicans...won a majority of the votes..."

NOOOOOOOOOOO.
:-/
Why Weber, why? Maybe his voting record I hope. I do know he is the establishment favorite as well.
Ah, this must be about the run-off election.
Edit: And he would be better than LAMPSON. :-(

Here's the press release:
There may be no stronger compliment than to have the current office holder, the people’s choice; give you their endorsement to succeed them when they leave. Who better to know the difficulties of the job, the complexities associated with the fiscal mess in Washington, and the responsibility of serving over 600,000 constituents on the Gulf Coast? Today, Congressman Ron Paul officially endorsed Randy Weber to fill his seat in Congress and continue the fight to save our country from an overreaching government that is destroying jobs and bankrupting future generations.
Congressman Ron Paul’s statement:
“I am pleased to endorse Randy Weber in the race to succeed me in the Fourteenth District of Texas. Randy is a family man, a man of faith and a man of strong character. It is very important to me that my friends and neighbors receive strong representation from their Congressman and I know that Randy shares a deep commitment to constituent service. The fourteenth district will have a real Champion in Randy Weber.
As a small business owner, Randy understands how excessive regulation and reckless overspending by government is destroying jobs and squeezing our community. Randy Weber will be a strong and consistent voice to get Washington off our backs so we in the Fourteenth District can work and grow.
Randy Weber is my choice for Congress. I hope you will join me and send him to Washington,” said Congressman Ron Paul.
In addition to the endorsement, Congressman Paul has also agreed to promote Weber’s candidacy to his army of supporters across the country. In the next few weeks, Congressman Paul will join Randy on the campaign trail in the district.
“Dr. Paul has led a revolution directed at turning our country around by returning to principles found in the Constitution. He’s traveled coast to coast, speaking to millions of people of all races, ages, backgrounds and philosophies about the urgency of the moment to save our country from fiscal ruin. He’s a father, grandfather, good Doctor and a Patriot. Congressman Paul knows the people of the Gulf Coast are hardworking, honest and deeply concerned about the direction we’re traveling under Obama. I am honored to have his endorsement. I will represent the people of this district with integrity and do my best to get our country back on course,” Randy Weber said.

What a traitor! He has betrayed the Congressman that Weber is running to replace!
oh wait...
I don't understand this endorsement...but it is his choice.

This seems like the Ted Cruz endorsement. Neither are really liberty candidates but happen to be a little bit better than their respective opponents...

Ron Paul has endorsed plenty of non-perfect liberty-leaning candidates before, such as Rep. Don Young.
But this endorsement is just like the Rand endorsement--fairly meaningless in terms of choosing the best candidate since the real election (the primary) is pretty much over. When Rand endorsed Romney, he did so when he was left with two options: Romney or Obama. Of course Rand endorses the fellow Republican over the Democrat. In this case, of course Ron is endorsing the better Republican over the (most likely) much worse Republican and the Democrat.

I was under the impression that Weber was very establishment, and Harris was the lesser of two evils for this race? His endorsement isn't meaningless, since there is a runoff next month.

I have no idea which of the two is better, but my general point still stands. If he was actually endorsing based solely on who would be best for liberty, he would have endorsed in the primary, probably one of the minor candidates. Yes, it's a bit odd that he is endorsing now, rather than in the primary or after the run off, but I guess I'd have to know the two GOP candidates better before I attempt to make sense of the endorsement.

Oh no! Ron Paul endorsed someone that isn't fighting the battle for liberty! Now we all have to go vote him too! Ahh!

I saw a video once where he was asked about an endorsment he made and his reply was that he made a deal to endorse all Republican encumbants in Texas, that would explain the Ted Cruz thing and so and so, its very different to endorsing a president. He also keeps his word.

Ron didn't endorse anyone in the primary. Had there actually been a liberty candidate, he would have done that. NOw the primary is OVER he is saying the best of what is left. If you are trying to compare it to a pre primary endorsement against the best liberty candidate, ever, that doesn't really compare.

Except Ted Cruz is not an incumbant.

I'm pretty sure that was for Rand. Rand had endorsed him, De Mint had....and he was better than the one who might otherwise win. Late in the game Ron will endorse the best between the choices. He needs to have a 'liberty candidate' stamp to differentiate the particularly good ones. I always figure those are the ones he donates to.

I agree;this is most likely the case with Cruz.
