Iowans loyal to Ron Paul prevailed in getting almost their entire team tickets to the national convention Friday night.

But a tug-of-war is evident today at the Iowa GOP state convention – some Republicans don’t want Paul backers to dominate the Iowa delegation. Another 13 delegates will be picked today.

This morning, a debate over rules on the delegates voting ended with angry shouting.

“All right, folks, this is not going well,” the convention chairman Bill Talbot said after a delegate came to the audience microphone and shouted at him.

Talbot appealed for decorum.

“We are trying to be pleasant people here, let everyone be heard,” Talbot said. “We’re trying to figure out how to do this fairly. The next person that does that is going to be removed from this convention.”

Talbot then ushered Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds onto the stage to give a unifying speech.

Some Republicans think it would be an embarrassment if Paul gets the most national delegates from Iowa as Mitt Romney sails towards capturing the GOP nomination at the national convention at Tampa, Fla., in late August.

The argument this morning was connected to a rival slate, called the “unity” slate. That slate is made up of Iowans who backed Romney, as well as Rick Santorum, the winner of the Iowa caucuses, and others.

Friday night, delegates picked 12 district delegates. Eleven of the 12 are Republicans backed by the Paul movement.

Another 13 at-large delegates will be selected today.

There’s a bigger crowd here today than Friday night – which means there might be enough voting power to override the official Paul-heavy slate.

Backers of the unity slate circulated 800 little slips of paper listing the names of preferred delegates. There are just over 1,400 delegates at the convention – and it’s heavy on Paul loyalists.

Iowa Republicans will send a total of 28 delegates to Tampa – 12 elected from the districts, 13 elected from an at-large slate, plus the state party chairman and the two national committee members. All are unbound, meaning they’re free to vote how they choose at the national convention.

Also this morning, U.S. Rep. Steve King asked Republicans to “join together.”

“I trust Mitt Romney to do the right thing,” King said. “Some of you may not. But here’s what you can trust. You can always trust Barack Obama to do the wrong thing.”

Here’s the names the Paul movement in Iowa wants to voted in today as delegates to the national convention: Gov. Terry Branstad, Sen. Chuck Grassley, Margaret Stoldorf, Michelle Bullock, James Mills, Steve Anders, Roger Leahy, Mark Hansen, Will Johnson, Lexy Nuzum, Andrea Bie, David Fischer, and Drew Ivers.

And here are the names the unity movement wants elected: Branstad, Grassley, Stoldorf, state Sen. Renee Schulte of Cedar Rapids, Joni Scotter, state Sen. Tim Kapucian of Keystone, Deb Thornston, Jeanita McNulty, Mark LeRette, Connie Schmett, Rod Roberts, Steve Sukup and Cody Hoefert.

The delegates elected from the four congressional districts Friday night are Jeff Luecke, Brent Oleson and Kelly Schoen from the 1st District; Ani DeGroot, Bob Anderson and Ed Kelenyi from the 2nd District; Nancy Bowery, Gopal Krishna and Glen Massie from the 3rd District; and Dusty Juhl, Brian Kraft and Jeff Taylor from the 4th District.

Anderson is the only delegate who wasn’t listed on little white slips of paper circulated to Paul loyalists Friday night. He’s the original backer of the unity slate. He’s also the chairman of the Johnson County GOP and a new GOP state central committee member.

I had no idea Iowa convention started last night. What a pleasant surprise to find out we took 11 of 12 delegates.

Battling it out for the remaining 13 at large delegates today.

Currently they are at lunch but I am trying to play catch up on what has transpired so far this morning looking at twitter feeds.

U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley said today he’ll make an appeal for party unity at this weekend’s state convention of the Iowa Republican Party, which has seen Ron Paul loyalists dominate the organization’s management structure.

Some Republicans think it would be an embarrassment if Paul gets the most national delegates from Iowa as Mitt Romney sails towards capturing the Republican Party nomination at the party’s national convention at Tampa, Fla., in August. Romney was originally declared the winner of January’s Iowa GOP caucuses, but former Sen. Rick Santorum was later confirmed as the victor by party officials.

“I am going to have a message to all of the delegates, not just to the Paul people, that we have to join arms in order to win this election and carry Iowa,” Grassley said.

what was that mechanism? One could easily argue that eastern establishment / country club / rockefeller / RINOs have been fighting harder and more effectively against conservatives than conservatives have been fighting against them. Party Unity is a trick that they use. When the Conservatives pick someone they don't like, you see George Romney in 1964 refusing to support Goldwater, and saying Goldwater is not electable because he's too extreme.

I don't know. There is more uncertainty surrounding Louisiana and Nevada.

In Nevada, we have our people there, but there is the issue of "bound".
In Louisiana, there is the issue of 2 lists of delegates.
It's possible that those uncertainties have been cleared up.

Being bound to Romney doesn't disquality nevada, alaska or any other state. All you need is a plurality of the delegates. The vote for nomination from the floor is separate vote from the nominating the president nominee. That is the only vote according to the state they are required to vote for Romney.

But will there be a special vote on "plurality of delegates"? I have no idea.

Louisiana and Nevada make the five, do they not?

And what's the status on OK?

Yes they do. Each state takes a nomination from the floor to put there name up to be voted on. That vote is a separate vote. Even Sara Palin or any other candidate could be nominated from the floor. It is not mandatory to vote for Romney.

Obviously all the negative stuff in this forum hasn't let people who want to really continue the fight let it slow them down. Well done, well done!

And Shaw noted Santorum won the Iowa caucuses in January. “His supporters have an awful lot to add to this party and it’s wrong to not have a single supporter as a delegate to the national convention,” he said.

I love it, looks like Santorum will have zip to fight the Paul people with.

You folks are patriots!!! Thanks.

As an aside, my guess from very far away from the USA is that 150 of our votes more or less were alternates that were moved up to delegates?

Can anyone from Iowa comment?

Alternates are seated because some delegates do not show up. ALTERNATE=DELEGATE

Do not be ashamed of being an alternate. It usually is a delegate later.

And keep in mind, alternates, the next year after elected there are meetings, or conventions for your local party where you need to go to elect central comm. members and local endorsements etc.

EVERY SPOT IN THE PARTY IS WORTHWHILE

Got there about 8:45 this morning. They're using scan delegate tags which slowed things at the door for awhile. Inside I spoke with several Paul people wearing white hats passing out the slate info. They pointed out to me a older guy also wearing a white hat passing out a the "Unity" slate. I went up to him and told him he was intellectually challenged having to attempt to fool people into voting for his slate then I walked away. He came up to me getting into my face and called me an "asshole". I think he was trying to provoke me. Anyway I and a couple of other became his shadow telling people the guy was a cheater. People would take his slate, look at it then drop it on the ground. (Later after the vote to accept the proposed delegates he was leaving he walked by me with his wife and said "Hey cheater you forgot your white hat" and tried to hand him a white hat that I had.)

After the vote to accept the nominated delegates and alternates a lot of people left with frowns upon their faces.

It's rather amusing now. I doubt their fake slates have fooled a single RP supporter (I've never heard one say ooops over it) and the only thing they are accomplishing is pissing RP delegates off and making him look worse (if that is even possible). Keep stirring the nest Romney...our delegates got a stinger with your name on it in Tampa.

+ rep for shadowing the Romney Zombie. Brains! I need a brain!

"Party Unity" has brought us fiat money, eternal war for profit, millions of dead innocents, a monstrous police state, Monsanto, and economic ruin.

You won't get an argument out of me.

HAHAHAAAA!! That's awesome!!

John, do you know if anyone got any video of this guy handing out the deceptive slates? And/or did anyone keep the fake slate and a real Liberty slate for comparison, so all of this can be reported to the Lawyers for Ron Paul that are handling that lawsuit? (Not sure if this is similar to what happened in Maine and Nevada; it kind of sounds like you're talking about a fake decoy slate designed to look like the real one?)

Even if no one got any video or kept the slates as evidence, they could still use your statement and anyone else who was there who witnessed anything improper. Let me know if you want links to some of the threads that have more info on the lawsuit, who's behind it, and all of that. Every little bit makes the case even stronger, and if the suit is successful it may get all delegates from all states unbound on the first vote. It could be a huge game changer...

Thanks again for your work there in Iowa!!

I know. Kim Pearson should have gotten it. She is a true fighter for liberty.

Yesterday was awesome but nerve-racking. I watched the opposition on Friday and Saturday try to out organize us and out work us. They failed. We won. Great victory.
