On Sunday, the Rev. Al Sharpton, said in a statement, “History will record that it was Rodney King’s beating and his actions that made America deal with the excessive misconduct of law enforcement.”

I spoke about Rodney King the night before he died.

I was comparing his assault to that of Mr. Herford in Louisiana. Considering that King assaulted officers (which is on video, but you rarely see), I think Mr. Herford's assault by cops is a much important story for the mass media to cover.

Sorry to hear of Mr. King's passing. He was neither a great hero nor villain of history. Yes he assaulted officers prior to the beating, but that doesn't change the fact that the beating was excessive. Just because a police officer gets assaulted doesn't give him the right to continue beating someone in definitely. Sure, Rodney King isn't as sympathetic a figure as Kelly Thomas (homeless guy beaten to death) or the diabetic that was mistaken for a drunk and beaten by police, but he is still significant is that this was one of the first times an excessive beating was caught on camera. And while the riots that happened later were wrong as well, he (King) did not call for them, and in response to them he gave a call for peace. "Can we all just get along?" So ends another sad chapter in U.S. history.
