The full page ad commissioned by Lawrence Lepard is complete and is set to appear in USA Today on Wednesday November 21st with a right hand placement in the first section- NEWS. The word is that USA Today was willing to do this ad because it was a grassroots effort, amazing.

The concept for the ad was originally developed by "max" here at RonPaulForums.com and tailored based on Lawrence's wishes from hundreds of comments from forum members in an open source ad development methodology.

Lawrence passes on his thanks for everyone who provided input but please hold your critical comments in this thread as it will do no good.

This is an amazing American story, please share it.

A PDF of the ad is available now and free for anyone to use. If you use this ad with changes be sure to remove Lawrence's and Linda's name.

The PDF is here (someone please rehost this):

Absolutely,

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.

For all the efforts, for all the kind words, for all the support.

We are powerful as a group. This advertisement was a true "open source" effort. It may be the first of its kind.

It is infinitely better than any one individual could ever draft.

And, it is all because of the members of this forum, everyone of whom I am indebted to. It is an honor to be affiliated with this candidate and this forum.

I do not need more thanks. ALL EFFORTS SHOULD BE DIRECTED TO PUTTING RP IN THE WHITE HOUSE.

I think we can do it. In brother Bluto's words.........let's do it!

though its an altered and watered down shadow of the my original masterpiece than ran in NH....it's is still an awesome piece...

It's like a great athlete playing with an injury at 70% capacity.....not as powerful...but still better than the competition..

what folks failed to realize is that the original NH piece had already undergone intense fine tuning at this forum 2 months ago..

this second and third wave took away the punch and will cut in half the number of readers who read it from start to finish...and therefore the number of readers who get down to the Tea party section..

But it will still have a great impact.....It's too bad there's no way to quantify how much actual donations it will bring in....but I'd say from $500,000 - $1,000,000 beacuse of the Tea Party promo in the black box

I'd be curius to see the numbers at TeaParty website after the ad hits..

thank you Larry...your $100,000 investment will have a 500 %- 1000% cash return to the campaign....No wonder your company is doing so well!!

I just made a blog about this, to help get the word out about our efforts. Could mean free publicity of people realize how this was put together.

Here is a bit from my blog post:

On RonPaulForums.com on November the 13 the first draft of the Ad was posted in a thread that asked for input. There were a total of 5 of these thread made till today, November the 16th with much debate and suggestions. Each thread had a new design given, and was again debated and commented on by those at RonPaulForums.com. The ad was desgined by Linda Lagana, and the orginal concept was by Max @ RonPaulForums.com, but it was obvious those behind the the design were seriously listening to the thoughts of those that were checking out the threads.

Here are some stats on this Grass Roots Advertising Online Work Group:

5 threads.

57,715 views.

1277 replies.

3 days.

Priceless.

I understand your point Max, at least to the tone being changed. I happen to agree that the changes made it better, but hey I could be wrong.

I think it was an amazing that so many people worked together on it. Sounds like you don't.

But your assertion that this is like Frankenstein is off. Yes the monster was made of different little bits, but it was designed by one person. This was had input by many.

--------

The ad is ready to roll.

Now all you people get working more to help Ron Paul win. Get out and get working. Peace.

Awesome effort! I'm really excited to see the ad in print!

Be sure to leave an open copy on the tables and benches in all the lobbies, waiting rooms, etc that you frequent...

Few people would object to an open newspaper left somewhere, especially a USA Today.

I think I'll go to a few coffee shops and buy something, buy a paper, and leave it on a table...

I'm also working on a RP business card, double-sided, full-color, full-bleed, along the lines of my design for the ad. I can get 5000 cards shipped for about $75. Send me a message if you are interested in getting some. I plan to distribute them like candy every place I can. leaving small stacks in as many businesses as I can. (with permission of course)

Again, awesome effort!!! Ron Paul will make it! We just need to stay focused, stay together and never forget that we are fighting for our freedom!!!

Yes, NATIONAL Edition (not International we need to send it via PDF to foreign fans.) Circulation is 2.2 million or more.

Circulation may normally be 2.2 million, but there's a full page Ron Paul ad in it, so I'm guessing it will be about 3.5 million that day. ;)

It's a thing of beauty, and will likely get some attention beyond the readers of USA Today.

Lawrence, I know you're humble and don't feel you need to be thanked, but really you do. This is an awesome contribution to not just the campaign, but to our lives, and our children's lives as well.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! (from my wife, my son, and I)

Will it be in the Thanksgiving papers as well, or just the day before Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving Day or the day after Thanksgiving would be a superb day to post a one time Ron Paul ad because a LOT of people look at the paper on Thanksgiving for those black friday specials. Plus everybody has a day off and they are more inclined to read the paper.

Still, even if it's the day before Thanksgiving, it's a great ad. It should make quite an impact.

This looks great. Spread it around. The 1-877-RON-PAUL number is easier to remember and spreads Ron Paul's name around better. It's easier to remember than the other number too. The numeric version is 1-877-766-7285. This is an official campaign toll-free number and can be used to reach older folks who don't have internet, or who are hesitant to put their credit card info online. Go Ron Paul and thanks Mr. Lepard.

Lawrence you're the man!!

save them for the regular readers...

if u hand them out to general public you'll hit a much lower percentage of voters...

Llepard, thank you so much. Also, you should probably get a nice haircut and buy some fancy clothes, i'm more than positive a handful of news stations will want to interview you. You should probably get a pro-Ron Paul speech together to give for even more bang for your buck.

Shouldn't the phone number still be 877 Ron Paul? Now 877Ron2008?

Or is Ron2008 a valid number also?

Other then that, I don't care how the ad looks. Millions of People are going to read this. And that's wonderfull.

I do not need more thanks. ALL EFFORTS SHOULD BE DIRECTED TO PUTTING RP IN THE WHITE HOUSE.

I think we can do it. In brother Bluto's words.........let's do it!

Lets all make sure we do something tomorrow (er, today, its after midnight) to help Ron Paul- attend one of the marches (Austin and other cities) if you can, donate a few bucks, slap another bumper sticker on your car, hand out some slim jims, put up some signs, etc.

The digg page is there but we got pulled off from the front page - last night at 1AM Central we were in the #3 slot for the Top 10 of the day- this morning we're gone with no where near the 24 hours from submit time.

Given this fact, and the fact that digg wouldn't even let a submission be made to RonPaulForums.com (I had to submit to RonPaulForums.org and redirect it) it is clear that the digg system is horrible. :(

I think someone who has contact with USA Today should tell them to print an extra 10,000 copies that day, at least.

I am concerned that tons of Ron Paul supporters will scoop up so many copies and it will keep others (who really need to see the message) from getting their copy at the end of the day when the newsstand is empty.

But...WOW. This is exciting!

Question: Will "reprint" permission be granted on this ad? I would guess that there are many Ron Paul "meetup" groups across the country that could afford to re-run the ad in their local papers after it appears nationally on the 21st.

It's a fantastic, well-done advertisement. Reprinting it in local papers across the country might be the most effective way of getting Dr. Paul some name recognition!

Has anyone looked into campaign finance law issues surrounding this ad?

I'm not trying to be a buzzkill, but I think Lawrence could be setting himself up for some trouble.

I'm about 90% that this type of an independent expenditure advocating a candidate would count against someone's $2,300 limit for that candidate. If so (and I'm guessing Lawrence spent more than that), he/we (mainly he) needs to be prepared for anyone blowback.

Before anyone jumps on me for raining on the parade, I'm not saying I agree with the law, and allow me to say I do like the ad. But if Fox Noise comes a-calling and wants to put Lawrence on the air and springs a trap on him by asking if he intends to challenge the FEC on this, he needs to be ready for that.

Personally, I think current campaign finance laws violate our First Amendment free speech rights. But as we all know, the law (and the folks in robes charged with interpreting the law) frequently ignore the Constitution.

So, I think we (again, mainly Lawrence) need to be ready for anything on this. If the media even mumbles anything about campaign finance, Lawrence can't allow himself to be flummoxed here. The other campaigns would love to paint RP supporters as troublemakers (or conspiracy theorists, bigots, etc...we've seen it already).

Howdy.

I love this ad, and I would like to run it in Florida Today, which is the local paper down here on the Space Cost. I can't afford USA today, but I can still reach a chunk of people down here in a swing state.

May I have your permission to duplicate this ad? May I have the original PSD files to edit the footer? Also, if I can't get a full-page ad, would it be acceptable if I edited it into a quarter-page or 1/8th page ad?

Advertising in smaller, local papers in cheaper than I thought. As a matter of fact, I suggest we all try and run a few ads from our local meet-up groups.

My thinking is this: most of the people who don't use the Internet are the ones still reading newspapers. This a great opportunity to reach new people- those not already familiar with the Ron Paul Internet phenomenon.

See also: http://zaphodforpresident.com/2007/11/20/ron-paul-call-to-action/ (100% ad-free).

If I am being presumptuous, please excuse me. I will be happy to design my own ad- however- I think this ad is GREAT.

Absolutely. This was an "open source" campaign development advertisement. It belongs to all of us on this Forum.

Kind of the way America is supposed to belong to all of us as citizens.

Thank you for the great offer!!! Go for it. If there is anything we can do to help we will.

Send me a PM and I will hook you up with the designer. To comply with Federal Laws (FEC) you need to put your name on the adv. you need to have a contact point , and you need to put the disclaimer that it was not supported by a candidate or the candidate's committee.

If the cost is over $2,300 or you have given over $2,300 in this cycle you need to file a form.

Mark on this forum has the details on that.

Good luck and thank you for supporting this great cause! We all salute you!

Hello Larry,

Words cannot express my thanks to you and your family for doing this. This is truly inspiring and has restored my hope and knowledge that there are moral and ethical people out there that care about more than the pursuit of iPods, granite countertops, SUVs, and searching for the meaning of life at Disney.

I did a similar thing on Facebook (although not near the size and scope that you are doing) for the November 5th, 2007 event that just passed.

I cannot donate to Ron Paul's campaign. Why? I am Canadian. However, there is nothing to say that I cannot contribute to his campaign in other ways. So I paid out of pocket personally to run an ad on Facebook that targeted about 20 million Americans.

Canada needs Ron Paul. The world needs Ron Paul. His message will set the stage and light an example as to what freedom and liberty means. Canadians will sit up and take note (why do we need a Central bank - the Bank of Canada - and why do we need income tax - collected by the Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA?)), and finally begin to understand that inflation is a surreptitious and insidious tax.

If you are interested, you can click on this image to simulate what users on Facebook saw:

http://gilliganscorner.files.wordpress.com/2007/11/fb_flyer3.jpg (http://gilliganscorner.wordpress.com/2007/11/02/the-next-fb-flyer/)

Thank you for such prompt and encouraging replies. I will check this out further tonight after work. In the meantime, you bring up a good point- I've already maxed my personal donation limit. Am I allowed to buy an ad? Does that count as a "donation"?

This might sound insane, but how difficult is it to set up a PAC? Would the PAC be allowed to buy ads as "People for Ron Paul, LLC" or whatever? Would it hurt the campaign to purchase ads via PAC, even if all the members were just joe-shmoe members of local meet-up groups?

If anyone could point me in the right direction on this, I would appreciate it greatly.

P.S. Are these donations tax deductible? If not, why so many rules and regulations? How do the big guys do it?

P.P.S. I personally don't care if they are tax deductible or not. If Ron Paul wins, it becomes a moot point! Boo IRS! Yay Dr. Paul!

PM Lord Xar on this forum. He can tell you about how to set up a PAC.

If you do it personally you can avoid the PAC issue.

A couple of points, first, PAC donations are limited to $5,000 or $10,000 per person. Lord Xar will know the details.

My advice? Just pay for it and disclose it.

Good luck. LWL

Yawn...So let's see what happening in Mainstream Media today:

Headlines From CNN:

Larry King on walkoff: 'I have seen it all now'
Report: Dennis Quaid's babies given overdose
Extra airspace may ease travel woes
I-Reporters: Funny Turkey Day traditions
Homeless carpenter digs multiroom hole
Lawmaker pummels reporter on live TV
Taser doesn't faze charging rottweiler
Vote for your favorite CNN Hero
And the breaking news: Study: Babies can tell naughty playmates

Over to Yahoo News:

Make Wolfgang Puck’s perfect mashed potatoes
77% of Americans are uneasy about one thing (turns out it is "There is a widespread unease—shared by 77 percent—that the country has meandered off in the wrong direction." - they are right, but they think Dr. Phil will fix it.). You can take the poll here (http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/files/specials/interactives/wdc/yahoo_poll2/index.html?SITE=YAHOO&SECTION=HOME) You will be stunned the completely irrelevant questions it asks you..
Holiday travelers surprised to find few air delays
Shoppers turn to lower-price stores amid gas, credit woes
Study: Babies can decipher between nice, naughty playmates (this must be critical news as it is in CNN too)
Biggest bug ever

Wow. Just....wow. I often envision a Mainstream Media editor getting drunk at his desk wondering if it happens little by little or is their a singular point in time when he/she sold out. If you remember Bloom County, you'll remember this line:

Opus: "Boss, I wrote an article with the headline"
The Editor: "No, god please, no....I have my dignity...I still have a shred of morality..."
Opus: "Space Aliens land in Edna Hornby's Bathtub; Pour Stale Billy Beer over startled Widow!!!"
Editor (pauses then screams): "RUN THAT BABY!!!!"

It is true. The media's function is to bring the audience to the advertisor...

** Info from the FEC site is below: **

The ad must be REPORTED to the FEC
and be created
COMPLETELY INDEPENDENT from the official Ron Paul Campaign

FEC Rules and guidelines page:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Prohibited Contributions and Expenditures
The FECA places prohibitions on contributions and expenditures by certain individuals and organizations. The following are prohibited from making contributions or expenditures to influence federal elections:
Corporations;
Labor organizations;
Federal government contractors; and
Foreign nationals (http://www.fec.gov/pages/brochures/foreign.shtml).Furthermore, with respect to federal elections:
No one may make a contribution in another person's name.
No one may make a contribution in cash of more than $100.In addition to the above prohibitions on contributions and expenditures in federal election campaigns, the FECA also prohibits foreign nationals, national banks and other federally chartered corporations from making contributions or expenditures in connection with state and local elections.
'
Independent Expenditures (http://www.fec.gov/pages/brochures/indexp.shtml)
.
Under federal election law, an individual or group (such as a PAC) may make unlimited "independent expenditures" in connection with federal elections.
An independent expenditure is an expenditure for a communication which expressly advocates the election or defeat of a clearly identified candidate and which is made independently from the candidate's campaign.
To be considered independent,
the communication may not be made with the cooperation, consultation or concert with,
or at the request or suggestion of,
any candidate or his/her authorized committees or a political party,
or any of their agents.
While there is no limit on how much anyone may spend on an independent expenditure,
the law does require persons making independent expenditures to report them and to disclose the sources of the funds they used.
The public can review these reports (http://www.fec.gov/finance/disclosure/imaging_info.shtml) at the FEC's Public Records Office.
I believe the ad also had a very important purpose of reaching those who do not spend much time online. I don't think someone that never heard of him will instantly go online, after seeing the ad, to donate money...but perhaps they will start looking into what this "Ron Paul guy" is all about.
Millions of people saw this ad...it will have an effect for sure. People are busy getting ready for Thanksgiving tonight, or were traveling to where they are spending the holiday. Tons of people aren't even at home with their own computers...no way did this ad not have an effect....I can only imagine how many people that never heard of Ron now have seen this full page ad...now when they see the Ron Paul signs all over the country, they will know what he stands for and who he is.
Just in case you guys didn't read my other post about this...
We are on vacation on the eastern shore of VA and now in VA Beach today and through the weekend.
We tried to find a copy of the USA Today in numerous shops, stopping at CVS's, hotels, bookshops etc. No one had a copy, just leftovers from the day before. It wasn't until we went into the Hilton in VA BCH that we found out that the truck delivering the area's papers had had an accident. No USA today's for all of Hampton Roads area and up the eastern shore.
We called a friend down in Charlotte, NC and he got the last copy in a box and is holding on to it for us.
Can anyone independently confirm why these papers didn't get distributed??
RON PAUL - USA TODAY
I made USA Today sales go up by 2! Money well spent!
USA Today Ad - Official Press Release
One Ron Paul Supporter Foots Bill For Full Page Ad in ‘USA Today’
Hopes well-timed and well-placed ad will wake America up
Boston MA – November 21, 2007 – Larry Lepard, a 50-year old investment manager, Harvard Business School MBA, and Ron Paul supporter, is bringing the concept of “grassroots” to a whole new level. After collaborating on design and copy with a spontaneously generated team of Paul supporters on ronpaulforums.com, Lepard invested approximately $85,000 of his own money to send a message to the voting public: “Ron Paul is the best hope America has to restore the Constitution and get our country back on track.”
The full page ad, due for publication on Nov. 21 in USA Today, is entitled “An Open Letter to the American People,” and reads as though it were penned by the Founding Fathers. In it, they admonish modern day citizenry for not heeding the founders’ original warnings. Each advisory is then followed by a forthcoming solution if Ron Paul is elected as President. Issues such as entangling foreign alliances, government corruption, excessive taxation and preserving national sovereignty are emphasized.
Lepard followed the political career of Congressman Ron Paul for over 20 years by subscribing to his newsletters, donating to his congressional races, and attending speeches at economic forums. “Over the years, I learned to admire both his positions and his integrity. He struck me as the ‘Mr. Smith Goes to Washington’ type,” says Lepard. When Dr. Paul announced his candidacy for President back in March of ’07, Lepard had already donated to Paul’s exploratory committee.
Lepard, husband and father of three, is gravely concerned about the prevailing pre-emptive war paradigm, as well as what he views as the loss of civil liberties as the US Constitution is continually decimated. “I view this expenditure as an investment in the future of this country and of my children. Right now, it is David vs. Goliath. This ad is my way of throwing a stone…very hard and very well aimed…at the forehead of overbearing government. We’ll see if it hits the target.”
Ron Paul is a 10-term Republican Congressman from the 14th District of Texas. Dubbed by many as the Champion of the Constitution, his campaign has recently shocked media pundits with unexpected fundraising feats. Most recently, grassroots efforts netted $4.2M in one 24 hour period this past November 5th, with $8.5M being raised so far this quarter. Paul is gaining in the polls and may have more money on hand than so-called “top-tier candidates” such as John McCain. The Ron Paul campaign had no involvement in the creation or funding of the USA Today advertisement.
I posted an answer to your first post, it'd be easy to miss.
Did you ever contact the hotel again or a store nearby?
If you check with whichever establishments get the paper
in the area of the hotel,
they might be able to tell you if a main distribution truck crashed,
or just the local delivery van.
They had never heard of Ron Paul, and I used this ad to show them who he was....they just left 5 minutes ago with the ad in hand...
I totally get it. I am Canadian too, sid! As I said before on this thread, I am so impassioned about Ron Paul, I even paid for a FaceBook advertisement to promote the November 5th event! You can see it here (http://gilliganscorner.wordpress.com/2007/11/02/the-next-fb-flyer/).
What we need to do, Sid, is to support Connie Fogal, leader of the Canadian Action Party. She is this closest thing we have to Ron Paul. I don't agree with everything she says, but at the very least, this party recognizes the problems that RP does. Their solutions might need some help though ;-)
I just dl'd it, and will upload to one of my hosting accounts, and will report back when it's done with a link to it.
Ok, it's up and ready for download at this link:
http://theneed.org/USA_Today_Ad_Printout.zip
click the link and it should offer the option to open it or save it.
