10 Signs That The Highways Of America Are Being Transformed Into A High Tech Prison Grid

Michael Snyder
The American Dream
Wednesday, June 6, 2012

Once upon a time, the open highways of America were one of our greatest symbols of liberty and freedom. Anyone could hop in a car and set off for a new adventure at any time and even our music encouraged us to “get our kicks on route 66″. But today everything has changed. Now the highways of America are being steadily transformed into a high tech prison grid.

All over the country, thousands upon thousands of surveillance cameras watch our highways and automated license plate readers are actually being used to track vehicle movements in some of our largest cities. Many state and local governments have come to view our highways as money machines and our control freak politicians have established a vast network of toll booths, red light cameras and speed traps to keep cash endlessly pouring in. If all of that wasn’t enough, TSA “VIPR teams” are now hitting the interstates and conducting thousands of “unannounced security screenings” each year. Driving on the highways of America used to be a great joy, but now “Big Brother” is rapidly sucking all of the fun out of it. Eventually, it may get to the point where Americans simply dread having to go out on the highway.

The following are 10 signs that the highways of America are being transformed into a high tech prison grid….

#1 Surveillance Cameras

All over the United States, a vast network of surveillance cameras is carefully watching our highways. The following is an excerpt from a recent article in the Baltimore Sun about this phenomenon….

The room is large and well lit, and it buzzes with activity even though its occupants remain seated.

The video screen at the front of the room is as wide as an IMAX, though not quite as tall. It consists of 64 smaller screens – 16 columns of four apiece – that monitor every inch of interstate between Great Wolf Lodge and the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. There is an emphasis on tunnels and bridges, and one corner screen is tuned in to a 24-hour weather report.

If you are driving on an highway in Hampton Roads, VDOT is watching you.

#2 Automated License Plate Readers

In a previous article, I detailed how automated license plate readers are being used to track the movements of every single vehicle that enters Washington D.C.

A recent Washington Post article explained that most people do not even know that they are there….

More than 250 cameras in the District and its suburbs scan license plates in real time, helping police pinpoint stolen cars and fleeing killers. But the program quietly has expanded beyond what anyone had imagined even a few years ago.

With virtually no public debate, police agencies have begun storing the information from the cameras, building databases that document the travels of millions of vehicles.

Nowhere is that more prevalent than in the District, which has more than one plate-reader per square mile, the highest concentration in the nation. Police in the Washington suburbs have dozens of them as well, and local agencies plan to add many more in coming months, creating a comprehensive dragnet that will include all the approaches into the District.

A lot of police cruisers are being outfitted with this technology around the nation as well.

So if you see a police car pull up behind you, there is a very good chance that a computer has already read your license plate and is giving the officer all of your information.

#3 Ridiculous Regulations

Some of the new “auto safety laws” going in around the nation are absolutely absurd.

For example, do you buckle up your pet when you go for a ride? Well, in New Jersey you can now be fined up to $1000 for not having your pet properly restrained while you are out driving.

#4 Outrageous Fines

In many areas of the country, unpaid traffic tickets can rapidly become a major financial burden.

For example, the new tolls on the 520 floating bridge in Seattle are absolutely killing some commuters…..

Registered vehicle owners who do not pay their toll within 80 days or more will be mailed a $40 civil penalty for each unpaid toll transaction in addition to a $5 reprocessing fee.

WSDOT confirmed some tolls plus penalty fees have added up to more than $1,000.

#5 Oppressive Toll Roads

Toll roads have become one of the favorite “revenue raising tools” for our politicians.

At this point the tolls on some roads have become so incredibly oppressive that many people simply cannot afford to drive on them anymore.

And for some reason the toll increases are coming especially fast and furious this year.

A recent USA Today article summarized some of the oppressive toll increases that we are seeing all over the nation….

•California and Washington authorized high-occcupancy toll (HOT) lanes, where tolls rise or fall depending on traffic flow. Texas enacted laws authorizing private toll roads and allowing regional authorities to collect tolls. Indiana removed a provision requiring legislative approval for toll roads.

•Some Maryland tolls will double this year as the state seeks money to rehabilitate aging roads, bridges and tunnels.

The use of tolls on interstate highways also is spreading:

•Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, a Republican, just won approval from the Federal Highway Administration to add tolls on Interstate 95 in his state. The state estimates that tolls on the heavily traveled corridor could generate $250 million over the first five years for expanding, improving and maintaining the highway.

•New York and New Jersey recently announced that E-ZPass commuters will pay $1.50 more and cash customers $2 more to cross bridges and tunnels between the two states.

•Georgia just created toll lanes on Interstate 85 in suburban Atlanta.

The toll hikes are more than chump change: Cash tolls on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge jumped to $4 from $2.50, and to $12 from $8 on all the New York-New Jersey Hudson River crossings.

Toll roads are one of my pet peeves. Any time I see a toll booth it immediately puts me in a bad mood.

#6 Red Light Cameras

Red light cameras are another favorite “revenue raising tool” for the control freaks that run things.

Unfortunately, these cameras don’t always work right so a lot of innocent people end up getting ticketed.

But politicians love them because they can raise a lot of cash. The following is from a recent Business Insider article….

According to U.S. PIRG (Public Interest Research Group), nearly 700 U.S. cities and towns installed the cameras, which accounted for more than 90 percent of tickets issued for illegal right turns, or rolling stops.

In one New Jersey town, PIRG found 2,500 tickets were issued at one intersection within the first two months of installing a camera.

#7 Speed Traps

In the old days, speed traps were mostly about making the roads safer.

Today, they are mostly about raising money.

One police chief up in Michigan has even admitted that the nature of his job has fundamentally changed….

“When I first started in this job 30 years ago, police work was never about revenue enhancement, but if you’re a chief now, you have to look at whether your department produces revenues.”

Speed traps are becoming more common almost everywhere, but some areas of the country are worse than others.

A recent report from the National Motorists Association ranked how likely you are to get a speeding ticket in each of the 50 U.S. states….

After crunching the numbers, the NMA found that Nevada is the state most likely to issue you a traffic ticket, followed by Georgia and Alabama. In 2010 Florida took the top spot and Georgia and Nevada tied for second place.

The state where you’re least likely to get ticketed is Wyoming, followed closely by Montana. These two ranked at the bottom in 2010 as well.

#8 Government Spying

It has been revealed that the federal government has been secretly putting GPS tracking devices on thousands of vehicles in order to track the movements of people that they are interested in watching.

Most of the time the people involved have not even been charged with any crimes.

The following is a short excerpt from a recent Wired magazine article about this phenomenon….

The 25-year-old resident of San Jose, California, says he found the first one about three weeks ago on his Volvo SUV while visiting his mother in Modesto, about 80 miles northeast of San Jose. After contacting Wired and allowing a photographer to snap pictures of the device, it was swapped out and replaced with a second tracking device. A witness also reported seeing a strange man looking beneath the vehicle of the young man’s girlfriend while her car was parked at work, suggesting that a tracking device may have been retrieved from her car.

Then things got really weird when police showed up during a Wired interview with the man.

The young man, who asked to be identified only as Greg, is one among an increasing number of U.S. citizens who are finding themselves tracked with the high-tech devices.

The Justice Department has said that law enforcement agents employ GPS as a crime-fighting tool with“great frequency,” and GPS retailers have told Wired that they’ve sold thousands of the devices to the feds.

#9 Extraction Devices

If you get pulled over by police, you never know what to expect these days. Previously, I have written about how law enforcement authorities in some parts of the U.S. are using “extraction devices” to download data out of the cell phones of motorists that they pull over.

The following is how a recent article on CNET News described the capabilities of these “extraction devices”….

The devices, sold by a company called Cellebrite, can download text messages, photos, video, and even GPS data from most brands of cell phones. The handheld machines have various interfaces to work with different models and can even bypass security passwords and access some information.

#10 VIPR Teams

If all of the above was not bad enough, now we have to deal with TSA “VIPR teams” terrorizing us on the highways.

If you regularly travel across the country, there is a good chance that you have already encountered one of their “unannounced security screenings”.

The following is from a local news report down in Tennessee about how local authorities are working with VIPR teams to fight “terrorism” on the interstates….

You’re probably used to seeing TSA’s signature blue uniforms at the airport, but now agents are hitting the interstates to fight terrorism with Visible Intermodal Prevention and Response (VIPR).

“Where is a terrorist more apt to be found? Not these days on an airplane more likely on the interstate,” said Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security Commissioner Bill Gibbons.

Tuesday Tennessee was first to deploy VIPR simultaneously at five weigh stations and two bus stations across the state.

TSA VIPR teams now conduct approximately 8,000 “unannounced security screenings” at subway stations, bus terminals, seaports and highway rest stops each year.

Are you starting to see what I am talking about?

All of this “security” is becoming extremely oppressive.

We don’t need “Big Brother” constantly watching us, tracking us and fining us on our highways.

So do you have any examples of how the highways of America are being transformed into a high tech prison grid to add to the list above?

Excellent article!

I just came home from a cross country trip and I can attest that cameras are everywhere!! It is sickening. In Texas, you cannot even pay cash when you use their toll roads. They force people to use the RFID pass or they take a picture of your license and send you a bill.

We know from NJ exposure that those RFID passes are tracked off the toll roads. This is to enact mileage taxes in the future! WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!!!

John F Kennedy III, have you seen the trailers for the new game by Ubisoft, Watch Dogs? I'll admit, the game looks pretty fun and interesting to play, but knowing that predictive programming is sometimes used in many medias, what are your thoughts on it?

How do these extraction devices work? Do they need to physically posses your phone or will the extraction device work from a few feet away? Is this simply a hack to get into your phone or does it download the contents of your phone onto their remote device?

And the noose slips a little tighter, the surveillance grid grows a little more powerful.

30 years ago this would have been outrageous "Soviet" style intrusions on freedom.

Now, welcomed and embraced, and more requested.

I believe they have to physically possess most phones to DL it's contents. I'm sure that will change just like the black boxes on new vehicles. Pull up next to you at a light and bingo, they just checked your car and your phone. It's only going to get worse as they tap into retail cameras so they can actually follow you into a store and then tape your movements once inside and record your purchases.

This town I am living in was actually 1 of 6 test counties that started using license plate readers. They can park a vehicle on the side of main street coming into town and record every vehicle going by. They don't even have to be in the car anymore since the data can be transmitted back to the station and other deputies instantly notified that you just went by in an unregistered vehicle. You can't even tell there is a camera hidden in the bubble lights and of course it becomes permanently stored data even though they claim it will be wiped out in 6 mos....lol....why would they keep my data for 6 mos or longer anyway????
A bunch of us went to a town meeting to bring this up and we were told that we did not have any say since it was not a town agenda item and could not be placed on the agenda since the town did not spend any funds for this.

Even on RPFs I'm ignored or barked down when I point out the incremental tyranny going on every day. I've been trying to wake people up for a long-ass time. Doubt it will happen till people are quite literally so enslaved and impoverished that they can't enjoy the bread and circuses anymore.

That's the truth. If it doesn't immediately effect their little world they don't give a fuck. I prefer the completely apathetic to the ones that will bark you down. A slave defending its master is worse than a slave that doesn't know or care that it's a slave.

Due to conditioning though, I imagine a great deal will actually praise how well they get treated in the FEMA Camps.

This is the shit that just makes me ill, and as despondent about the future as an 80 year old man.

It was not that long ago, in my lifetime, where hopping on a scooter, or driving down the road with the top down was the epitome of freedom, a good day in the sun.

That joy is gone, at least for me, knowing that every move I make on the road is monitored, tracked and analyzed, with Draconian fines and prison for stepping out of line and computer cars nagging you and tracking you and doing your driving for you. (of course reporting and logging every inch of travel and location)

This only affects us older folks, you youngsters that have been carrying electronic dog collars all your life, you, who have been immersed in the grid since the day you were born, will have no understanding of what I'm trying to relate, the simple joy of riding down a country road without big brother watching over your shoulder.

And that thought make me so angry, sad, frustrated and impotent all at the same time, that I could literally weep.

The future is so fucking fail.

Our state passed red-light cameras for every major (and minor really) intersection all over the place, just to have them voted out years later. They discovered that red light running and fatalities increased with the cameras. Now they have turned them off, which I like, but they have an aversion to common sense. They left two cameras active and recording anyways, for the busiest intersections, and now when I look up at the black globes at every intersection I think of all the money wasted for a failed program. Until I remember they'll eventually just get turned back on again anyways in a few years...

Schifference, the devices in question are handheld gadgets that the "authorities" can plug into pretty much any cell phone or laptop. The way it can work, as I've heard it, is something like this:

Say you pull up to a toll booth to pay cash because you hate those stupid intrusive transponders. (makes you a "terrorist" suspect right there, doesn't it? What are you hiding???) A cop pops out of the booth and demands, "Give me your cell phone!"

"What do you need it for?" you inquire innocently.

"Are you resisting? Do you want to be arrested?!?" demands the cop, "I'm not telling you again - HAND OVER YOUR CELL PHONE, NOW!"

At this point, you can do one of two things: You can refuse to hand over the phone, at which point you have an excellent chance of getting tasered, pepper sprayed, dragged out on the ground, beaten, then arrested for Contempt of Cop.

Or you can hand over your cell phone.

If/when you hand over your phone, the cop plugs in his handheld device, and ever shred of data, every phone number, ever address, every GPS coordinate, every web page you've visited, every photo, every video on your device is copied over to the cop's handheld device and is now the Property of the State.

To be fair, I've not heard about his happening at toll booths (although I'm guessing that's coming soon) but I actually HAVE heard numerous accounts of this happening at the border. If you want to get back home, you have to go through the electronic equivalent of a body cavity search of the Powers that Be decide they're bored that day and want a little excitement in their lives.

I know for a fact that it has happened to truckers coming back into the country from Canada. It hasn't happened to me - yet - but I figure it's just a matter of time. The whole process is gut wrenching. But the real kick in the nuts is listening to some dumbass simpering about how our government is keeping us safe from all them "terrurists".... The "terms" usually involve a severe beating and a few broken bones, followed by a tazing for dessert - or maybe "just desserts" by their way of thinking.

I'm not saying it's not worth the pain to stand up against it, but I would feel better if it got a few folks to say, "Yeah - I'm not taking that shit either!" Instead, most of the comments in the aftermath will be something like, "sounds like he deserved what he got! I'll bet he's a terrorist! Thank God for the government!"

The Cootie Man can 'cause he mixes it with love and makes the world taste good

The Cootie Man makes everything he bakes satisfying and delicious
Now you talk about your childhood wishes, you can even eat the dishes

Oh, who can take tomorrow, dip it in a dream
Separate the sorrow and collect up all the cream
The Cootie Man, oh the Cootie Man can
The Cootie Man can 'cause he mixes it with love and makes the world taste good

The Cootie Man makes everything he bakes satisfying and delicious
Talk about your childhood wishes, you can even eat the dishes

Yeah, yeah, yeah
Who can take tomorrow, dip it in a dream
Separate the sorrow and collect up all the cream
The Cootie Man, the Cootie Man can
The Cootie Man can 'cause he mixes it with love and makes the world taste good
Yes, the Cootie Man can 'cause he mixes it with love and makes the world taste good
a-Cootie Man, a-Cootie Man, a-Cootie Man
Cootie Man, a-Cootie Man, a-Cootie Man
Cootie Man, a-Cootie Man, a-Cootie Man

None are as hopelessly enslaved as those who think that they are free..

I don't know even what to do anymore. The designers of this crap have had so much experience that they know the slow creation of the police state over time is the best, with constant reminders of fake terrorist boogie men who are actually the FBI..I feel like a man screaming that a building is burning down while the last embers of the last bit of scaffolding are nearly out and everyone claims there is no fire at all or that they like fire because it makes them warm.

Winner!

I owe you a rep when I get more ammo.

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Vessol again.

One day our fathers, mothers, siblings, other family members, neighbors, coworkers and fellow Americans will wake up and see what we see. Its sad that we all will virtually living in a minimum security prison by time they do.

Most of these guys are military wannabes anyway, complete with the combat boots, sidearm, flattop haircut and an overabundance of testosterone.

I think you are missing my point. But it is a little complicated. They are offering you to contract with them, you conditionally accept. No hostile confrontation. Search Gordon Hall.

I'll send you a link if I get motivated.

Please do, seriously. Because while there is always the rare exception to the rule, it's my guess that in about eight cases out of ten, if one refuses a completely irrational, unreasonable, unconstitutional order from a law enforcement officer, one will be picking one's teeth off the ground.

Telling one of these clowns that he's doing something illegal/unconstitutional/ or in violation of contract will just earn you an extra kick in the nuts.

I doubt it. Most of them will have internally accepted it and will praise it either out of true adoration or as a means of survival.

In any sort of tyranny in the past, people never "woke up". They accepted it and lived with it. Look at Nazi Germany.

Accepted it, embraced it, facilitated it, wanted it.

Except here it's far more irrational than the Germans experience. At that time, memory of the "War To End All Wars", Versailles, etc was still fresh in most people's minds and poverty was widespread. Americans have never had it as hard as the Germans. There's no fucking excuse for boobus' attitude. (ignorance is not an excuse, IMO)

John F Kennedy III, have you seen the trailers for the new game by Ubisoft, Watch Dogs? I'll admit, the game looks pretty fun and interesting to play, but knowing that predictive programming is sometimes used in many medias, what are your thoughts on it?

Seems to be using fear of an attack to get people to give up every bit of their privacy. No it isn't just a video game. These games, as with many movies, are made to condition you to accept what they are planning to put in place.

I didn't catch why that guy was doing that in the 2nd video.
