Dog shot and killed during police call

PENFIELD, N.Y. -
The shooting and ultimate death of a pit bull by a Monroe County Sheriff Deputy in Penfield Friday night, has sparked some serious controversy. According to Corporal John Helfer, police were dispatched to the home of Gary Brockler around 11:30 p.m, responding to complaints of house party. Upon arriving, police say they were met by an aggressive, loose pit bull and proceeded to shoot and kill the animal.
However, members of the community that knew the pit bull, including the owner Gary Brockler, feel that the action was unprovoked.
"This dog was well trained, he was a great dog, he was a lover, he didn't have any aggression--we used to have little Chihuahua's that would come and bite at him and he would back away. Like he doesn't, he didn't have a mean bone in his body."
Brockler says he was told by the deputies that his car was parked outside his home on the sidewalk and they were coming to his home to ask him to move it.
Brockler's neighbor Mike Rush said he heard the gunshots and came out. "It was completely uncalled for a police officer can walk over in someone's yard and shoot their dog. it seems to me there are plenty of non-lethal tactics that could have been used."
Brockler hopes that action will be taken against the deputy that killed his dog.
