Several years ago, the United Kingdom used CCTV that could talk to people. It didn’t go well and some were shut off. Now, lamp posts that can listen to conversations, watch what people are doing, display ads, and can speak will be trialed in Chicago, Detroit, and Pittsburgh. At $3000+ each, it’s a very expensive investment in spying on innocent citizens.

Incrementalism. People are just too dumb to understand it. This is why countries become worse and worse. This is why people fail their diets.

"oh, its ok if we only do it a little bit."

Got nothing but it reminded me of this quote.

"He uses statistics as a drunken man uses lamp-posts - for support rather than illumination."

I'll pay a homeless guy $5 bucks to take a whiz on it.

I bet the UK solution to speeding camera's would end this test run real fast!

http://www.thenewspaper.com/news/37/3785.asp

The Baltimore Sun revealed that vigilantes have attacked speed cameras five times in Baltimore County, Maryland in the past two years. The most recent incident involved a speed camera burned on April 20. On October 8, a Dodge truck was used to rip a speed camera out of the ground. Two cameras were spraypainted. Last May, the lens of the automated ticketing machine on the 9800 block of Greenside Drive was shattered. Between 2000 and 2003 two cameras were shot, one with a small caliber handgun and another with a high-power rifle.

This is a surprisingly large collection of pictures documenting the destruction of UK Gatso (a brand) speeding cameras. That is, these cameras take a picture of your license plate (and sometimes your face, too) if you are driving above a certain speed. In the picture above, the Gatso camera was destroyed before the construction crew finished installing it.

So would a pick up truck with a deer hunter bumper.

The official "Bad Santa ringleader" may NOT even appear
in this video ...he's still at large. Last seen near North Pole.

These will obviously keep me safe from the terrorists. I feel safe now. Safety is nice. My government protects me. They hate us because we're free. I don't have anything to hide. I'm so much safer now. Safe. Safety. Thank you government.

They lowered the speed limit on the main street in front of the HS here and are planning on putting in a camera. This is for the students safety (despite that the street is kid free all but 2 hours a day when school is in session) and to raise income for the county (despite that the camera company gets 90% of all revenue the cameras bring in).

It's enough to motivate a guy to get his donkey and lance!

It should be obvious to everyone that simply complaining about the weaving of this web around us is going to do nothing to stop it. Even if Ron Paul becomes president, he won't be able to stop this.

The Free State Project is beginning to look increasingly crucial. I wish that Maine had been chosen rather than New Hampshire, since much of Maine is totally unpopulated forest land, and Maine wouldn't be surrounded by US territory if the option to secede ever arose. But we all need to stop insisting on having things our own way and start acting with unity. We don't have to agree on everything -- just on the basics, like NO PUBLIC SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS ALLOWED.

Everything that the surveillance state is putting in place here was already beta tested in the UK.

I figure it's roughly a five year delay.

That BBC story was from 2007.

So look to see the barking cameras on our streets by 2012.

Hail Oceania.

I hate being right all the time.

I really do.

Incrementalisim...Youngstown OH has had shotspotter for a couple years. Yet so many people think the slippery slope argument has no merit so we are only allowed to complain after the fact rather than warn as to what to expect according to teh path we happen to be heading down.

FWIW http://www.tribtoday.com/page/content.detail/id/561819/New-chief-reviews-ShotSpotter-status.html?nav=5021
"Foley said he wants to look at gunfire calls the department received before and after the sensors were installed and do a comparison before the department's next budget cycle. He said the maintenance agreement to keep the sensors working in peak condition is costly.

''It's so expensive to maintain,'' Foley said.

Bought on a federal grant and now the locals are going to be paying through the nose all alone for the priviledge of maintaining this surveillance.

Youngstown has kept the location of its sensors a secret. They placed them after studying crime data, such as where a large number of homicides have occurred.

They anticipate a backlash because of the use of this type of equipment...

How did that unity work out for you regarding that Tank the Police purchased?

Ah, nothing like pissing away the taxpayers money to imprison themselves in an ironic twist of fate. Nothing new really but I find the article about the destroyed auto-ticket machines invigorating.

As for unity, freedom-lovers don't have a whole lot of it.
