"On Thursday, the House Judiciary Committee held a hearing to discuss a proposed bill to limit location tracking of electronic devices without a warrant — what it's calling the Geolocational Privacy and Surveillance Act, or the GPS Act. Ahead of that hearing, University of Pennsylvania computer science professor Matt Blaze submitted written testimony (PDF) telling Congress that phone carriers, as well as the law enforcement agencies with which they share data, can now use phones' proximity to cell towers and other sources of cellular data to track their location as precisely or even more precisely than they can with global positioning satellites. Thanks to the growing density of cell towers and the proliferation of devices like picocells and femtocells that transmit cell signals indoors, even GPS-less phones can be tracked with a high degree of precision and can offer data that GPS can't, like the location of someone inside a building or what floor they're on. With the GPS Act, Congress is considering expanding the ban on warrantless tracking of cars with GPS devices that the Supreme Court decided on in January. Blaze's testimony suggests they need to include non-GPS tracking of cell phones in that ban, a measure law enforcement agencies are strongly resisting."

Tell Congress: No GPS Spying!

Right now, police have the ability to tap into your cell phone, smart phone, laptop and navigation device in order track your every move, and they can do this without obtaining a warrant.

Although Americans enjoy the technological advances that make life easier, many fail to realize that they come at a price – the loss of personal privacy. Such technology makes it easier for law enforcement to track and log citizens’ locations, and is opening doors to government overreach and infringement on Americans’ Fourth Amendment rights.

This is why Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT), and Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR), have co-sponsored the Geolocational Privacy and Surveillance Act (GPS Act) that will require law enforcement officials to obtain a warrant from a judge before they can access citizens’ location information that is obtained from cell phones and GPS tracking devices.

I wish cops could stop creating criminals -.-

The point of law is to protect, not to punish. What we're doing to "catch" criminals, completely defeats the purpose of law enforcement.

The point of cops is to create criminals. Otherwise all we would require would be the occasional officer of the peace, and not one of them for every 20 cops that are employed today.

I review the county arrest blotter, it comes out weekly. Almost every last arrest is for a "crime" that is only a crime because the government unlawfully infringes the liberty of citizens - drugs, alcohol, and license violations. And that doesn't even count all the bullshit tickets they put out.
