Good article if you're following the numbers in this race...

Gary Moore still leads all seven Republican candidates with the most money raised overall for the Fourth Congressional District primary and said he believes Thomas Massie to be his biggest competition.

But Alecia Webb-Edgington gained some ground by raising the most money in April, Federal Election Commission reports released Friday indicated.

Webb-Edgington raised $80,265 from April 1 to May 2 and has raised $209,446 overall. Moore raised $37,125 in that time, but has raised $275,620 overall.

Massie raised $75,023 in April and $227,552 total. Three super PACs, however, have spent money in support of Massie, according to the FEC.

Americans for Growth, Opportunity and Prosperity spent about $50,000, which included mailers supporting Massie and opposing Moore and Webb-Edgington. The PAC, established in Alexandria to support Massie, raised $61,000 for April and $82,000 overall. Liberty For All super PAC spent $542,000 on a television ad in support of Massie. The PAC, started by Texas college student John Ramsey in Austin, has raised about $911,000, with all but $10,000 of that coming from Ramsey.

Another super PAC, Washington, D.C.-based Club for Growth, spent about $2,200 to support Massie, FEC reports indicate.

Super PACs, unlike regular PACs, can’t make direct contributions to a political candidate or party but can raise unlimited funds for political causes independent of campaigns.

Moore said he believes Massie will be his biggest challenger in the May 22 primary.

“It shapes up to be a two person race,” Moore said. “Alecia is still competitive, but I think going down the stretch it’s going to come down to Massie.”

Moore made a distinction between the support he’s received and the support Massie’s received.

“To date, we’ve had about 450 various donors give money,” Moore said. “When you compare that to one person in Texas who’s a Libertarian putting in $500,000, I think this speaks volumes that we have broad support from within the district.”

Moore’s campaign has produced a television ad and a mailer attacking Massie’s record as a Lewis County Judge-executive, blaming him for the county’s unemployment rate and increasing spending.

Massie’s campaign dismissed the ads as false.

“The only thing truthful on that is Thomas Massie’s name and the fact he’s judge-executive,” said Phil Moffett, Massie’s campaign chairman. “The rest is utter nonsense.”

Moffett said he doesn’t know whether the support of the super PACs will hurt or help Massie’s campaign.

“Super PACs are an odd breed,” Moffett said. “We can’t have any coordination with them. We don’t know what they are doing. With them, the only thing to do is pray they have a positive effect.”

Three other Republican candidates, Marc Carey, Tom Wurtz and Brian Oerther haven’t reported any money raised. Walt Schumm, who raised $39,275 in the first quarter, didn’t have an updated report on the FEC database.
